Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Monday, May 23, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing. 

Disney India and UTV Motion Pictures enter into a creative deal to co-produce Disney-branded, family-targeted movies.  The new deal will see Disney and UTV work together on the creative for the movies, with UTV managing production, marketing and distribution on the projects.  Disney acquired the kid-targeted Indian TV channel Hungama TV in 2006, when it purchased an equity interest in UTV Software Communications, which owns UTV Motion Pictures, and it increased that stake two years later.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

CBBC orders Incredible Edibles (10×30), a new food series hosted by Stefan Gates (Gastronuts) from Objective Productions.  The series and Gates will introduce kids to different types of foods, various cooking methods and new ingredients, and adventures, while encouraging them to ask about where different where their different foods come from.  Objective Productions is part of the All 3 Media Group.  The series will be executive produced by Objective Productions’ Paul Gilheany and CBBC’s Bridget Banton.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Discovery Channel will air a special new episode of Mythbusters, which features a myth selected online by viewers as part of joint promotion between the network and Pizza Hut, on June 1 at 9p.  The episode is exclusively presented by Pizza Hut.  Also as part of the promotion, Discovery Channel has created a Pizza Hut-branded environment around the episode.  Promotion elements are showcased in two short-form vignettes, created by Discovery Channel that will run during the custom episode.  Additional Pizza Hut-branded elements include custom show opens and closes, five minutes of extended program content, and tagged tune-ins. The Mythbusters integrated clips will also be available online at discovery.com as will co-branded ads combining Mythbusters video content with Pizza Hut brand messaging.

Saban Brands releases the Power Rangers adventure game, Power Rangers Samurai Smash, for iOS (iPad, iPhone and iPod) on iTunes ($1.99).  The game features characters from the Nickelodeon series Power Rangers Samurai in 15 levels of game adventures, with three different survival modes.

Nickelodeon and IDW Publishing will release the first new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comic series this August 2011 with a new installment of the original series.  TMNT co-creator Kevin Eastman leads the creative team on the new comic series.  Eastman will co-write with Tom Waltz (Silent Hill: Past Life, Infestation: Outbreak), and the series will feature interior art by Dan Duncan, with Sam Kieth and Walter Simonson creating cover art for issues one and two, respectively.  IDW and Nickelodeon have a long-term partnership to create and publish a new installment of the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comics and graphic novels.  Nickelodeon is set to premiere the new CG animated version of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in fourth quarter 2012.

Random House Children’s Books reorganization of its paperback publishing program includes the launch of two new paperback book imprints, Ember and Bluefire, per Publishers Weekly.  While both new imprints will publish middle grade and young adult books, Ember will house trade paperbacks by noted authors and popular titles, mostly books that began at other Random House imprints and some original titles, with Bluefire serving as the home of high fantasy titles (nothing in the supernatural or paranormal romance genres), including classic series, which will be published in digest and trade paperback formats.  Random House Children’s Books existing imprints include Yearling, Laurel-Leaf, and Dragonfly.  Robin Corey VP and Publisher, Robin Corey Books and Paperbacks will be responsible for the Ember and Bluefire imprints.  Ember launches with 25 titles this spring including, Michael Scott’s Necromancer, Caroline B. Cooney’s They Never Came Back, and Token of Darkness by Amelia Atwater-Rhodes, as well as two original titles Amen, L.A. by Cherie Bennett and Jeff Gottesfeld; and Caissie St. Onge’s Jane Jones: Worst. Vampire. Ever.  Bluefire debuts this spring with six novels, which include Eoin McNamee’s The Ring of Five, Susannah Appelbaum’s Poisons of Caux: The Tasters Guild, and Guinevere’s Gift by Nancy McEnzie.  Bluefire will publish series such as 100 Cupboards by N.D. Wilson, the Beka Cooper trilogy by Tamora Pierce, and The Edge Chronicles by Paul Stewart and Chris Riddell.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Disney World Resort in Florida has officially opened the new 3D Star Wars attraction, Star Tours  The Adventures Continue, with Star Wars creator George Lucas, Disney President/CEO Bob Iger, Anthony Daniels (he played C-3PO) and lots of stormtroopers on hand for the event.  The new ride offers 50+ story combinations, so visitors will get a different experience with each time.  Star Tours  The Adventures Continue will open at Disneyland Resort in California on June 3, 2011.  Walt Disney Imagineering worked with Lucasfilm and Industrial Light & Magic to create and execute the new attraction.

Rubicon Group Holding (RGH) is named to design and produce The Red Sea Astrarium (TRSA), a new 184-acre themed entertainment resort in the coastal town of Aqaba, Jordan, which will focus on ancient Middle Eastern history and culture while also showcasing Star Trek.  Under a license deal with CBS Consumer Products, the new TRSA will feature a Star Trek space-flight adventure attraction (based on the 2009 movie), which is being developed by Paramount Recreation.  Slated to open in 2014, the US$1 billion entertainment resort is a green energy project and will incorporate the newest renewable technologies throughout, as well as hosting a “future pavilion” visitors and businesses about alternative energy sources.  RGH, a developer/producer of digital animation content and location-based entertainment, teamed with MGM to co-produce the animated series Pink Panther and Pals for Cartoon Network.

Marvel Entertainment inks a licensing deal with Super Rad, a maker of collectible items, to launch a line featuring Marvel super heroes including Thor, Captain America, Spider-Man, Iron Man, and The Hulk.  The Super Rad line will feature unique Marvel products including Do-It-Yourself vinyl figures, Do-It-Yourself resin statues, USB/thumb drives, MPR players, vinyl collectible trading charms, and Ningyo Dolls.

Tiger Aspect Productions enters into a license deal with Shanghai Franchise Enterprise Management Services Company for the rights to use the Mr Bean character brand for Mr Bean Coffee Shops in China.  Under the agreement, a group of six coffee shops will open this year in the provinces of Shanghai (Jiangsu and Zhejiang), with 12 more set to open in 2012.  Plans are also underway for Mr Bean merchandise to be offered at these stores.  Mr Bean and Mr Bean the Animated series have aired around the world and have also been supported with a strong licensing program, which includes DVD titles, video games, books and toys.
