Cynopsis: Kids!
05/22/06
Good morning. It’s Monday, May 22, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.
Paramount Pictures has established Paramount Vantage, a new specialty unit that will release 8-10 films annually. The new Paramount Vantage label will focus on independent pictures in genres including those with an art-house appeal, as well as small budget comedy and horror films. The Paramount Classics label will continue to exist as a label within the specialty division, with plans to go forward with its current release schedule. However, beginning in 2007, Paramount Classics will produce smaller films, such as foreign-language and documentaries. John Lesher will serve as President of both Paramount Vantage and Paramount Classics.
Conan O’Brien will host The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences’ 58th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards, scheduled for Sunday, August 27, at 8p, on NBC, from the Shrine Auditorium in LA. The awards show will be Executive Produced by Ken Ehrlich, who has produced the Primetime Emmy’s twice before, and the great Jeff Ross, who is also Conan’s Late Night Executive Producer. O’Brien first hosted the Primetime Emmy Awards in 2002. The nominees for the 58th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards will be announced July 6, 8:35am ET.
NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
Production has begun on Sheepish, a CG animated movie from IDT Entertainment. Sheepish is the tale of Logan, a wolf that is turned into a sheep after he breaks an age-old pledge, only to wind up looking to other sheep for help. Based on an original idea and debut script from Bart Couglin, who served as a character technical director on Antz, Shrek, Shark Tale, and the upcoming Bees and Flushed Away, Sheepish will be directed by Saul Blinkoff and Elliott Bour, who together have worked on a number of animated movies including Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, The Lion King, Pocahontas, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Mulan, and Tarzan, as well as direct-to-DVDs, TV series and commercials. The animation for the movie will be produced at IDT’s studio in Toronto.
MTV has given the go ahead for Moves, a new music reality series, which counts Jennifer Lopez as on of its Executive Produced. Scheduled to premiere in Q4, 2006 with 8 episodes, Moves follows the interconnected stories of six dancers (3 male, 3 female) who are trying to make as professional dancers. Lopez was a key part in the auditioning and selecting the six dancers and plans to make cameos appearances. Simon Fields, who is a partner in Lopez’s production company, Nuyorican, is also an Executive Producer, along with Rod Aissa and Jesse Ignjatovic.
MTV Latin America is wrapping up production on its new documentary series titled Quiero mis quinces. The series spotlights 15-year old girls in Argentina, Colombia and Mexico as they prepare for their quinceaneras celebrations. It debuted this weekend with the series beginning in earnest on June 6 in its regular Monday primetime slot. There are no plans at this time to air the show in the U.S. per Variety.
Donny Osmond, yeah I know if you are under 30 … well okay 40, you have no idea who he is … but nonetheless, Osmond is heading to Broadway’s Lunt-Fontanne Theatre where he will take on the role of Gaston, the egotistical and expert expectorator with an eye on Belle in Disney’s musical Beauty and the Beast. He joins the cast on September 19, 2006 for a nine week run. Osmond previously starred on Broadway in a misbegotten revival of Little Johnny Jones (1982), and as Joseph in the national tour of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.
