Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Monday, May 22, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.

Paramount Pictures has established Paramount Vantage, a new specialty unit that will release 8-10 films annually.  The new Paramount Vantage label will focus on independent pictures in genres including those with an art-house appeal, as well as small budget comedy and horror films.  The Paramount Classics label will continue to exist as a label within the specialty division, with plans to go forward with its current release schedule. However, beginning in 2007, Paramount Classics will produce smaller films, such as foreign-language and documentaries. John Lesher will serve as President of both Paramount Vantage and Paramount Classics.

Conan O’Brien will host The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences’ 58th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards, scheduled for Sunday, August 27, at 8p, on NBC, from the Shrine Auditorium in LA.  The awards show will be Executive Produced by Ken Ehrlich, who has produced the Primetime Emmy’s twice before, and the great Jeff Ross, who is also Conan’s Late Night Executive Producer.  O’Brien first hosted the Primetime Emmy Awards in 2002.  The nominees for the 58th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards will be announced July 6, 8:35am ET.

Production has begun on Sheepish, a CG animated movie from IDT Entertainment.  Sheepish is the tale of Logan, a wolf that is turned into a sheep after he breaks an age-old pledge, only to wind up looking to other sheep for help.  Based on an original idea and debut script from Bart Couglin, who served as a character technical director on Antz, Shrek, Shark Tale, and the upcoming Bees and Flushed Away, Sheepish will be directed by Saul Blinkoff and Elliott Bour, who together have worked on a number of animated movies including Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, The Lion King, Pocahontas, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Mulan, and Tarzan, as well as direct-to-DVDs, TV series and commercials.  The animation for the movie will be produced at IDT’s studio in Toronto.

MTV has given the go ahead for Moves, a new music reality series, which counts Jennifer Lopez as on of its Executive Produced.  Scheduled to premiere in Q4, 2006 with 8 episodes, Moves follows the interconnected stories of six dancers (3 male, 3 female) who are trying to make as professional dancers.  Lopez was a key part in the auditioning and selecting the six dancers and plans to make cameos appearances.  Simon Fields, who is a partner in Lopez’s production company, Nuyorican, is also an Executive Producer, along with Rod Aissa and Jesse Ignjatovic.

MTV Latin America is wrapping up production on its new documentary series titled Quiero mis quinces.  The series spotlights 15-year old girls in Argentina, Colombia and Mexico as they prepare for their quinceaneras celebrations.  It debuted this weekend with the series beginning in earnest on June 6 in its regular Monday primetime slot.  There are no plans at this time to air the show in the U.S. per Variety.

Donny Osmond, yeah I know if you are under 30 … well okay 40, you have no idea who he is … but nonetheless, Osmond is heading to Broadway’s Lunt-Fontanne Theatre where he will take on the role of Gaston, the egotistical and expert expectorator with an eye on Belle in Disney’s musical Beauty and the Beast.  He joins the cast on September 19, 2006 for a nine week run.  Osmond previously starred on Broadway in a misbegotten revival of Little Johnny Jones (1982), and as Joseph in the national tour of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.

Boomerang will feature Superman Saturday, a 24-hour marathon on June 24, beginning at 6a.  The Superman event comes one week in advance of the worldwide release of Warner Bros.’ live-action feature Superman Returns on June 30.  The marathon will feature DC Comics’ Man of Steel in episodes from the animated series Superman (1996-2000), Batman Beyond (1999-2001), and Justice League (2001-2004), all produced by Bruce Timm.  Created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, Superman first appeared in Action Comics #1 in 1938.

The new Curious George (30 x 30 min) TV series, produced by Imagine Entertainment, WGBH Boston, and Universal Studios Family Productions, with the support of Houghton Mifflin, will premiere Labor Day, Monday, September 4 on PBS Kids, as part of its new hosted preschool block.  Based on Curious George book series by H.A. Rey, the new daily series is narrated by actor William H. Macy.  Each episode includes two animated stories that are followed by a short live-action segment that shows real kids in activities that underline the theme of that episode.  The series is designed to spark the interest and curiosity of preschoolers, while providing parents/caregivers with ways to support kid’s hands on science and math related activities.

Toon Disney kicks off summer with Jetix Big Blockbuster Summer on Monday, June 5, 2006.  The Jetix Big Blockbuster Summer programming lineup begins with the hour-long premiere of Oban Star Racers at 8:30p, followed by new episodes of season two of W.I.T.C.H. at 9:30p.  The Jetix Big Blockbuster Regular half-hour episodes of Oban Star Racers will air Mondays 8p.  Power Rangers Mystic Force begins with a marathon on Monday, June 12, 7-10p during Toon Disney Jetix, with the final hour featuring new episodes of the series and introducing the newest Power Ranger, Solaris Knight.  Finally, viewers are invited to vote online for categories in the Jetix Hero Awards.  Results will be featured on-air during Toon Disney Jetix on Friday, June 2, 7-10:30p.

Sony Pictures Classics has snapped up the North America rights to the British movie Driving Lessons, a comedy, written by screenwriter Jeremy Brock who will also makes his debut as a director with this project.  The coming of age story stars Rupert Grint (Harry Potter) as a teen who spends the summer working for an aging onetime famous actress, played by Julie Walters, who provides the teen with an experience that is diametrically opposed to the life he has known growing up with his strong and uptight mother, played by Laura Linney.
