CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Cynopsis

05/15/06

Good Morning. It’s Monday, May 15, 2006, and this is your first early morning briefing.  Welcome to Upfront Week!

As all previous presidents, President Bush has scheduled an in-sweep speech for this evening at 8p, scheduled to last approx 20 minutes. Doesn’t the President know Oprah was supposed to have her Legendary ball at 8p, and Prison Break on Fox is slated to have its season finale?  Probably not.  Regardless, NBC and Fox both said last Friday they would carry the speech.  ABC has reset its evening to air a repeat episode of last night’s Grey’s Anatomy at 8p, followed by the 2-hour finale; and CBS still seems to be working out the details.

Tonight’s Finales:
UPN:   One on One at 8p, All of Us at 830p; Half & Half at 930p
Fox:    Prison Break at 820p
CBS:    How I Met Your Mother at 830p
ABC:    Grey’s Anatomy at 9p

* MORE GOOD STUFF *

Not so fast for the series ended police — not quite officially yet, but 7th Heaven reportedly will return for an 11th season, having been resurrected at the last hour as part of the September CW schedule. At this writing there is nothing to report on whether all or part of the large cast will return.  Stephen Collins tells Cynopsis: “I’ve been hearing all the reports about 7th Heaven but I haven’t heard anything official from any producer or executive about the show being picked up. I also don’t have a deal at this point.”  As for Stephen’s immediate plans, he’ll be heading off to Capetown, South Africa, for a movie from Ed Zwick called Blood Diamond, with Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Connolly.

First up for the upfront presentations this week is NBC, scheduled for this afternoon at Radio City Music Hall.  There is scuttlebutt the Tina Fey project has now been picked up (as of late last week it’s fate was still unknown), and on Friday the Andy Richter project got the official go-ahead.  While NBC is staying predictably mum over its soon-to-be announced fall schedule, much of the conversation at the water cooler surrounds Thursday nights. There has been word ER may move, tho nothing confirmed or denied there.  Also there is speculation My Name is Earl and The Office will remain on Thursdays from 8-9p, while the Tina Fey comedy starring Alec Baldwin may move in at 9p or 930p.  Tho if that scenario holds true, the Studio 60 on Sunset Strip with Matthew Perry among others, is left out of Thursdays, and may then find a home on earlier in the week at 10p.

And don’t forget about Sundays on NBC – come this fall NBC has football on Sunday nights which means it needs to find at least temporary new homes for Crossing Jordan and L&O: Criminal Intent.  And while you’re trying to figure all that out before 3p this afternoon when NBC presents, also consider the other new dramas coming to the network including Raines with Jeff Goldblum, Friday Night Lights (seems a shoe-in for Friday nights), 20 Good Years with John Lithgow and Jeffrey Tambor, Heroes and the comedy series, The Black Donnellys, Kidnapped and comedy project The Singles Table.  Not expected to be a concern for scheduling next season on NBC are Dick Wolf’s Conviction, Joey, Surface, E-Rings, or Teachers.

ABC has ordered up a handful of pilots in preparation for its upfront presentation announcements scheduled for tomorrow, and has already announced the nixing of another. Coming on board for the new season are:

  • Ugly Betty from Touchstone TV
  • Traveler from Warner Bros. TV
  • Brothers & Sisters with Calista Flockhart from Touchstone
  • Men In Trees with Anne Heche from Warner Bros. TV
  • A Day in the Life from Sony Pictures TV
  • Let’s Rob Mick Jagger with Donal Logue for Touchstone and Worldwide Pants

Also returning for a second season, What About Brian?
Not returning — Invasion, Freddie. Still questionable:  George Lopez and According to Jim

Fox has given a 6 ep order to The Winner for midseason from Seth McFarlane.  Also returning next season are War at Home, The Loop and The O.C.

And in other upfront news, The Wall Street Journal reports Johnson & Johnson has notified the networks it will not be participating in the annual upfront buying season, choosing rather to wait until the end of the summer to make its deals.  WSJ also predict Coca-Cola may be holding off for the time being, tho nothing official has been said.

For the Time Warner / Court TV deal, the final gavel has landed.  Time Warner acquired the 50% interest in Court TV previously owned by Liberty Media for a cool $735 million in cash. At a conference call on Friday, Time Warner did not announce any executive changes per se, tho they did say Pres/COO Art Bell will stay on in a role very similar to his current role, as would GM Marc Juris. With the sale of Court TV, Henry Schleiff, non-executive Chairman of Court TV will remain in place for at least six months to help with the transition phase and focus on the network’s public service efforts. Under his leadership, Court TV grew from 30 million homes in 1998 to its current position at 86 million homes. The network also increased in primetime ratings from an average 40,000 to more than 700,000 households nightly, and is now valued at just under $1.5 billion.

The next time you go shopping you could become a beauty pageant contestant – no kidding! Style Network premieres Instant Beauty Pageant June 30 at 10p, the show where co-hosts Debbie Matenopoulos and Rossi Morreale ambush unsuspecting mall shoppers and prep them to appear in a beauty pageant on the spot. Each contestant will get $500 to shop and have three hours to get ready for the traditional pageant categories of talent, swimsuit and evening wear. The live mall audience will serve as judge. Each week’s winner gets the title of Ms. Instant Beauty and a trip to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. New episodes will air Friday evenings at 10p with encores airing Saturday and Sunday nights at 10p.

This summer, World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) and Comcast will launch a new WWE subscription VOD service, WWE 24/7 On Demand, available to almost 10 million Comcast digital cable consumers with VOD – in 22 of the top 25 U.S. markets where WWE pay-per-view and live events have performed well. The content will include classic matches and championships with favorite wrestling superstars such as Andre the Giant, The Rock and Triple H, plus new and original specials and shows.

The TV Guide Channel will premiere season two of Look-A-Like on May 31 at 8p. This show gives average people the chance to portray their favorite celebrity for a day after a tip to toe makeover by top entertainment industry stylists. After the makeover, each candidate gets to “act” like their star in front of the camera.

News Corp.’s website Myspace.com will be looking to position itself as a competitor with iTunes and Yahoo!, as it targets TV viewers by offering episodes of 24 for a buck ninety-nine a piece, beginning with Season #1 and continuing thru Season #5.  Just last week Fox did a deal with  iTunes where it now makes available for sale episodes from 24, Prison Break and Unan1mous, as well as other News Corp owned networks and the 20th TV library.
