Good morning, it’s Monday, May 14, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing.

It’s Broadcast Upfront Week and that means we’ll find out which shows have made it thru to the new season, which were dropped by the roadside, and what new series to look for in the fall.  Up first today is NBC, presenting this afternoon at Radio City Music Hall.  The news comes fast and furious this week, so let’s get to it.  But first, a quick look at tonight’s season finales …

Tonight’s Finales:
The CW: Everybody Hates Chris at 8p, All of Us at 830p, The Game at 930p
CBS: How I Met Your Mother at 8p, Two and a Half Men at 830p, The King of Queens (series finale) at 9p, CSI: Miami at 10p

~ UPFRONT UPDATES ~

NBC : in addition to the group of new pilot pickups announced on Friday (the Bionic Woman, Chuck, Journeyman, Life and Lipstick Jungle), one more comedy series has been picked up for next season:

  • Lipshitz Saves The World  a comedy starring Leslie Nielsen about a nerdy teen who is chosen to protect the world from danger. From NBC Universal Television Studio.

NBC Renewals: NBC will bring back Scrubs for a seventh and final season with 18 new episodes, produced by ABC Television Studio. Also returning – all three editions of Law & Order.  One caveat – all 22 original episodes of Law & Order: Criminal Intent in its upcoming seventh season will air first on USA Network. At least at the start of the fall season, Law & Order: CI will likely not have a regular home on NBC’s primetime schedule, but be brought in later when needed.

ABC presents tomorrow afternoon: The network has ordered seven new drama pilots:

  • Private Practice (wt) – the spin-off to Grey’s Anatomy starring Kate Walsh from ABC Television Studios and Mark Gordon.
  • Dirty Sexy Money – the legal soap starring Peter Krause who takes over the family firm when his father dies. From ABC Television Studios and created by Greg Berlanti (Brothers & Sisters).
  • Eli Stone – a second Greg Berlanti project from ABC Television Studios about a man who believes he is a prophet starring Jonny Lee Miller.
  • Pushing Daisies – centers on a man who find out he can resurrect people by touching them; stars Chi McBride, Kristin Chenoweth, Swoosie Kurtz and Lee Pace from Warner Bros. Television.
  • Big Shots – formerly referred to as the Jon Feldman project about a group of male professionals who support each other through life starring Dylan McDermott, Michael Vartan, Christopher Titus and Joshua Molina. From Warner Bros. Television.
  • Cashmere Mafia – similar to Big Shots but this show is about a group of women executives who are friends in NYC starring Lucy Liu, Bonnie Somerville and Frances O’Connor. From Sony Pictures Television.
  • Women’s Murder Club – based on the James Patterson novels centering on four women who track down serial killers in San Francisco. From Twentieth Century Fox Television.

ABC has also endorsed three new comedies:

  • Cavemen – inspired by the Geico commercials about primitive man living and working in Atlanta. Produced by ABC Television Studios and Management 360.
  • Sam I Am – Christina Applegate stars as an amnesia victim who realizes she wasn’t well-liked in her previous life. From ABC Television Studios and Brillstein-Grey.
  • Carpoolers – the series focuses on a group of guys who carpool to work everyday. From ABC Television Studios and Dreamworks.

ABC Renewals: ABC has ordered 13 new episodes of the mid-season freshman comedy Notes from the Underbelly, and despite its lower rating the comedy The Knights of Prosperity received the go-ahead. In addition, the drama October Road will be back next season.   Not on the renewal list — George Lopez.

At FOX , the last network to present on Thursday afternoon: six new series have been ordered including:

  • The Sarah Connor Chronicles – drama based on the sci-fi Terminator movies from Warner Bros. Television.
  • K-Ville – the cop drama set in post-Katrina New Orleans. Produced by Twentieth Century Fox Television.
  • New Amsterdam – drama about an immortal New York City detective from Regency Television and Scarlet Fire Films.
  • Back to You – formerly titled Action News, this comedy centers on a big-headed news anchor starring Patricia Heaton and Kelsey Grammer. From Twentieth Century Fox Television.
  • The Return of Jezebel James – the story line in this comedy involves an editor who asks her sister to carry her baby. From Regency Television.
  • The Rules of Starting Over – in this comedy, a group of thirtysomething guys suddenly become single. Produced by Twentieth Century Fox Television.

Fox Renewals: Returning next season is the Sony Pictures Television comedy ‘Til Death starring Brad Garrett.

MyNetwork TV had a series of one-on-one chats with advertisers last week, choosing to forego the large proscenium staged upfront presentation.  Out of those meetings come the news the network will debut a new series this fall called Divorce Wars, using a segment from the syndicated Dr. Phil Show wherein he puts couples on the verge of divorce in a home for five days so they can battle out their differences and hopefully arrive at a manageable situation.  The series is produced by Harpo Prods, and Dr. Phil will have a part in it, as he watches the couple during the five days, but a host will be hired for the series.  Additionally, MyNetworkTV will revive two series previously aired on other networks — from Bruce Nash, Meet My Folks; and from Fox Reality Group, Hotel Paradise.  Meet My Folks originally aired on NBC in 2002, and new episodes will be produced for MyNetwork.  Hotel Paradise originally aired on Fox, and new episodes will be produced that will air on both MyNetwork as well as the Fox Reality Channel.

Where’s CBS sneak peeks?  Notoriously tight lipped, there is no early news coming from the Tiffany network.  CBS presents on Wednesday afternoon at Carnegie Hall.

~ MORE STUFF ~

Jimmy Hall, 41, recently selected as host for this summer’s Shark Week on Discovery Channel died last Wednesday while base jumping from mountains on Baffin Island in Canada. Jimmy, who already had taped a portion of a special for Discovery in the Bahamas, was scheduled to swim with the sharks in Australia’s Great Barrier Reef for the network. As an adventurer, Jimmy spent much of his time in Hawaii yet traveled the world and appeared on many television programs and networks including NBC’s Today, CNN and Inside Edition among others.

Azteca America has picked up yet another carriage agreement.  Cox Cable will carry the network in Tulsa, joining previously announced deals with Time Warner and Comcast.   Tulsa is the first straight-to-cable market for Azteca America with Cox Cable. The carriage agreement is part of a national agreement for so-called “white-areas,” or markets where an Azteca America broadcast signal is not present.  Separately, Azteca America is also now carried in Toledo through a straight-to-cable agreement with Buckeye Cable.
