Good morning. It’s Monday, May 12, 2008, and this is your first early morning briefing. It’s Upfront Week for the broadcasters, and a few early pickups and renewals have already been made (read on!). One announcement expected to be official at midday today is NBC‘s announcing Jimmy Fallon will become NBC’s newest late night talent as host of Late Night (probably in June 2009 when Conan O’Brien will step into the retiring Jay Leno’s host seat). Tonight’s Finales: ~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~
ABC will bring back Boston Legal for a fifth season this fall after the network concluded negotiations with creator David E. Kelley over the weekend. Originally, the network wanted to hold Boston Legal for midseason. This agreement may also usher in a series pickup for the drama Life on Mars, an American version of the British series with the same title, which Kelley owns the rights to. FOX gave the 30m comedy ‘Til Death a pass for another season, but Back to You was not picked up for a second season. The final two seasons of ABC’s Lost will be extended by one hour each, taking both seasons to 17 total hours instead of 16. Since the WGA strike cut back this current season by three hours, ABC added the two hours to equal the same number of episodes that the produces and the network negotiated in 2007. It is unlikely, though Lost will be extended further beyond these 34 remaining hours. This season’s finale which airs on May 29 was recently lengthened to two hours. The CW ordered season three for The Game from CBS Paramount, reports Variety. ABC has ordered 13 episodes of Opportunity Knocks from Katalyst Prods and 3 Ball Prods, and the show is probably looking at a fall berth. The gamer has hosts traveling house to house asking questions and awarding cash for the right answers. Sounds a little like the final segment of Let’s Make a Deal when you earned cash by having weird items in your bag, doesn’t it? The CW ordered a pickup of Stylista, the second fashion reality series from Tyra Banks and Ken Mok. In Stylista, eleven contestants will battle for an editorial job with Elle magazine. It is likely the series will air on Wednesday nights making that night a full Banks/Mok night along with their America’s Next Top Model series. The new series is from 10 by 10 Entertainment and Bankable Productions in association with Magic Molehill Productions and Warner Horizon TV. FOX decided to move ahead with the J.J. Abrams drama Fringe produced by Abrams’ company Bad Robot and Warner Bros. and may add it to the schedule this fall. FOX granted pickups for two other new shows, the animated Class Dismissed (formerly Sit Down, Shut Up) from Sony Pictures Television and 20th Century Fox Television and the comedy The Inn from 20th Century Fox Television, Reveille and Principato-Young Entertainment. The CW tapped independent studio Media Rights Capital to program its Sunday night block. The network announced last week that it will turn over its Sunday night programming to an outside entity in order to concentrate on Monday-Friday programming. Viewers will see the partnership take fruition this fall as two new dramas and two new comedies will begin airing on Sundays. Newport Television, LLC based in Kansas sold four television stations to Washington-based Cowles Company. The four California stations involved in the transaction include KCOY-TV and KKFX-CA/Santa Barbara-Santa Maria and KION-TV and KMUV-LP/Monterey-Salinas. Weekend Box Office Estimates: May 9-11, 2008

MTV picked up a new reality game show from FremantleMedia North America called The Phone with executive producer Justin Timberlake. The Phone will debut this fall and is based on a Dutch reality game show from Park Lane Productions. Taking a cue from films such as Bourne Identity, The Phone will open each episode with two hidden cell phones ringing at opposite ends of a major city. Whoever answers the phones will have five seconds to decide if they are playing, then the pair works together through challenges and race against time to win a large cash prize. VH1 ordered another new reality series, reports THR, this one featuring Eddie Griffin and tentatively titled Eddie Griffin: Going for Broke. The eight-episode series produced by Grief Co. the production company behind A&E’s Gene Simmons: Family Jewels will look at how Eddie balances his life as a player and family man. Various casting briefs:
Casting Call: HGTV’s series Carter Can starring Carter Oosterhouse would like gregarious homeowners who live within a 50-mile radius of South Bay contact the producers with challenging home improvement projects. Renovation projects could be updating an old-fashioned kitchen or enhancing a backyard to make it a “living” room. Selected homeowners will receive a two-day home improvement project from Carter and his five-person team. Carter will even throw in a modest budget for materials. Those homeowners who already have a budget allocated for their project and a story as to why the project needs to happen will be given more consideration. For information and to receive an entry application, send an email to Tina at Casting Call: Fuse TV wants stories from band members that involve a serious issue affecting the band’s success. The situation could involve a band member’s addiction or anger management problem or anything similar. In order to be considered, all members of the band must participate and all members must be engaging and well-spoken and be willing to confront the problem openly. This opportunity could give bands great exposure and all music genres will be considered. Send a brief description of the band member’s troubles, photos of the band, contact information as well as video and website links to ~ ELSEWHERE IN CYNOPSIS ~
