Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Monday, May 10, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Bejuba! Entertainment is partnering with Teletoon Canada to develop the new mixed live-action/CGI tween-targeted TV series The Sherlock Legacy.  Based on the book The Sherlock Legacy by authors/programming execs Terry Kalagian and Geoff Skinner, who will help develop the series.  The Sherlock Legacy revolves around 15-year-old Leo Sherlock, heir to an age-old secret order that has prevented villains from Dracula to Grendel to Moriarty from taking over the world, and his two friends as they now work together to protect the planet from a monstrous group that have entered into their world via a mystical door opened by arch nemesis, and class rival, Marty Artie.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Columbia inks a deal with Will Smith to return as Agent Jay for a third Men In Black movie, this one in 3D (that part isn’t a surprise is it?), per Heat Vision.  Also back are director Barry Sonnenfeld and producers Walter F. Parkes and Laurie MacDonald.  As for the return of Tommy Lee Jones, talks are under way.  Additionally, negotiations are also under way with Josh Brolin to portray a younger Agent Kay (Jones’ character).  Etan Cohen (Tropic Thunder) wrote the screenplay for Men In Black 3, with David Koepp (a gazillion movies) providing a polish, and Cohen currently giving the script the final touches.  Columbia has slated the movie for release on May 25, 2012.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Univision Network unveils the nominees in 28 categories for the 7th Annual Premios Juventud (Youth Awards), which honors stars in Latin entertainment (music, film, pop culture, and sports) as selected by young Hispanics who vote online via Univision.com ( www.univision.com , keyword: Premios Juventud).  The show will air on Univision Network, Live from the BankUnited Center at the University of Miami on Thursday, July 15, at 7p.  Leading the nominations this year are Aventura, Anahi, and Chayanne with 9 nominations each, competing categories including Catchiest Tune, CD to Die For, and My Favorite Video, among others; followed by Thalia with five nods, Luis Fonsi with four and Tito “El Bambino”, Shakira, and Wisin y Yandel with three each.  Additionally multiple-award nominees include Alejandro Fernandez, Espinoza Paz, Ricky Martin and William Levy with two nominations each.  Fans can find a full list of categories and nominees at www.PremiosJuventud.com.  They can also vote there and on their mobile phones to vote for their favorite nominees now through May 27 at 11:59p.  The website also features photos and videos of each nominee, the opportunity to chat in forums, as well as a look at past shows, including best and worst dressed and behind-the-scenes photos.

Nickelodeon premieres the new special Nick News with Linda Ellerbee: So Not Cool: The Most Annoying Stuff Parents Say and Do, on Sunday, May 16 at 9p.  In addition to talking to kids about what their parents do that totally embarrass them, the episode features a host of celebrities talking about their childhood memories of parental embarrassment, including Tina Fey, Marlon Wayans, Wendy Williams, Howie Mandel, Jenna Elfman, Maya Rudolph, Fran Drescher, Brad Garrett, and Tracey Ullman.  In a poll of kids across the country asked about the ways their folks irritate them, the top ten answers to “It’s so annoying when parents…” (with one being the most annoying):
10 … say, “Go ask your mom!” or “Go ask your dad!”
9 … obsess about things that don’t matter.
8 … say, “Because I said so, that’s why!”
7 … say “When I was your age…”
6 … say, “When you’re older, you’ll understand.”

DHX Media enters into an exclusive US program license deal with PBS Kids Spout for the green lifestyle preschool series dirtgirlworld.  Distributed by Decode Enterprises, a unit of DHX, dirtgirlworld is produced by Decode Enterprises in partnership with mememe productions. The series is a commission of CBC (Canada), CBeebies (UK) and the Australian Broadcasting Company.  The series debuted on Sprout for Earth Day and is now airing daily on the channel at 4:50p, with dirtgirlworld related games, crafts and environment tips for parents of preschoolers available on SproutOnline.com ( www.spoutonilne.com ).

MARKETING/LICENSING

Stratego makes a new strategic move as property owner Royal Jumbo, a unit of European toy company JumboDiset based in The Netherlands, appoints Spin Master as its new North American production, sales, and marketing partner for the game, beginning January 2011.  Prior to this Hasbro held the North American Stratego license deal for close to 50 years.  The Stratego license deal with Hasbro expires at the end of 2010.

Disney parks is shuttering Lucasfilm‘s Star Wars theme park attraction Star Tours with plans to for a re-imagined version to open in 2011.  To celebrate the Last Tour to Endor, fans are invited to a “decommissioning” event of Star Tours, which will take place Saturday, August 14, 8p-1a at Disney World Resort in Florida. That is the same night of Star Wars Celebration V  The official Lucasfilm fan convention and Star Wars party.  The big event will feature a Death Star Disco and culminate with Symphony of the Stars  a Star Wars Fireworks event.  For information on Star Wars Celebration V, tickets, and Last Tour to Endor special offers fans can go to www.starwarscelebration.com .

The Dimensional Branding Group (DBG) completes multiple title and brand deals for its exclusive North American representation of Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA). DBG is focusing its licensing efforts on the PlayStation brand, first-party software title characters and related intellectual property for use with branded merchandise. New deals include:

  • For the PlayStation brand: Slamsbrands will market a new storage towers and ottomans line; for the God of War (rated Mature) and Twisted Metal (rated Teen) franchises, DC Comics will launch new collectable figures and for infamous, a line of comics, manga and graphic novels.
  • BuySeasons will launch a party goods line based on the popular Ratchet and Clank (various kid and teen ratings).  Toy2R is developing a Qee-line for LittleBigPlanet (rated for Everyone) and ModNation Racers (Everyone).  Random House is launching a novel based on the Uncharted 2: Among Thieves (rated Teen) title.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

BBC Worldwide appoints Bob Traub as VP/Retail Development for the Americas.  Based in NYC, Traub will continue to build relationships with retailers for BBC Worldwide’s portfolios of brands including In The Night Garden, Doctor Who, Earth, and Top Gear.  Traub will report to Tom Keefer, SVP/Global Licensing.  A 16-year veteran of US and international entertainment licensing and marketing, Traub previously toiled for Chorion, Nickelodeon and Marvel Entertainment Group.

UK-based preschool toy manufacturer Martin Yaffe International (MYI) names Charles Spieler as its new Sales Director.  Additionally, MYI acquires Spieler’s Peter Pan Productions, an import/export licensed product agency founded by Spieler in 2007.  Under the new relationship Spieler will become an equity partner in MYI, while Peter Pan Productions becomes a subsidiary of MYI, with Spieler continuing to manage Peter Pan Productions.  MYI has this year been awarded several new licensing deals including ZingZillas, Timmy Time and Chuggington, as well as the renewal of the Bob the Builder master toy deal.

Walt Disney Company in India names Raju Venkataraman as VP and GM, Disney Media Distribution (DMD), the new name for Disney-ABC International Television, Disney’s integrated media distribution arm.  Reporting to Mahesh Samat, MD, Disney India, Venkataraman will oversee licensing of branded/non-branded content across all platforms. He will also continue to his responsibilities as VP/Channel Distribution, DMD Asia Pacific, continuing to report to Rob Gilby, MD/DMD Asia Pacific.  Most recently, Venkataraman led Channel Distribution; he is credited with helping build Disney’s portfolio of kid channels in India, including being part of the team that earlier this year completed a multi-year deal with Sun Distribution Services for distribution of Disney Channel, Disney XD and Hungama TV across multiple platforms.  He previously led Business Operations, Disney Channel in South East Asia.
