Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Monday, March 8, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Cardiff, Wales-based indie production house Boomerang Plus enters into a three-year/US$6 million deal to produce preschool programming for S4C‘s preschool service Cyw.  The deal begins October 2010, with about $2 million per year and revenue to be realized from fiscal year 2011 onwards.  Boomerang’s kid’s division has produced programs including ABC’H’ and Rhestr Nadolig Wil, and is currently in production on My Dad’s in Prison for CBBC.  Additionally, Boomerang’s subsidiary, Indus, is producing Tough Kids and Children of the Road, also for CBBC.

In the UK, Clive Crouch, COO, GMTV exits the company after 18-years, sending the kid’s production division into review, per Broadcast NowAlison Sharman, Director/Daytime, ITV, will oversee GMTV beginning next month and she will also head the GMTV management board.  A unit of ITV, GMTV produces the kid-targeted programming blocks Toonattik and Action Stations, which have effectively been canceled with ITV explaining the review found that the kid-targeted production group was “economically unsustainable” and furthermore did not “add sufficient value in terms of ratings and other commercial benefits.”  While there won’t be any new production (hosted segments, wrap-a-rounds or shows), GMTV plans to continue running acquired animated series.  GMTV’s Managing Editor, Neil Thompson and Editor Sue Walton will report directly to Sharman.  During his tenure at GMTV, Crouch served as Sales and Marketing Director before becoming COO in fall 2007.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Leading into the Bologna Book Fair, March 23-26, Harper Teen acquires the US rights to a new young adult trilogy by author Josephine Angelini from the Foundry, per Publishers Weekly.  Described as “a Percy Jackson for teenage girls,” Harper Teen plans to publish the first book in the series, Starcrossed, in summer 2011.  The Foundry is handling the foreign rights for the series the Bologna Book Fair, with the movie rights to the series being overseen by Angelini’s manager, Rachel Miller at Tom Sawyer Entertainment. The second and third titles in the book trilogy are, Persephone’s Garden and Ilium.

Columbia/Sony Pictures Animation‘s new mixed CGI animated/live-action The Smurfs feature is looking to add new cast members, with Jonathan Winters, George Lopez, Katy Perry and Alan Cumming in discussions to voice some of the little blue folks, per Variety.  If all goes well Winters will voice Pap Smurf, while Perry will lend her voice to Smurfette, and Alan Cumming could play Gutsy Smurf, while George Lopez voices Grouch Smurf.  The movie already has Neil Patrick Harris signed on to star as a live-action character in the Smurfs movie.  Raja Gosnell (Scooby Doo, Beverly Hills Chihuahua) is directing The Smurfs movie from a screenplay by duos David N. Weiss and J. David Stern, and Jay Sherick and David Ronn.

Warner Bros. shifts two more of its upcoming movies into the 3D column, The Green Lantern (June 17, 2011) and Zach Snyder’s picture Sucker Punch (March 25, 2011), the latter is not for kids, per Variety.  Snyder’s 3D animated movie Legends of Guardians (f/k/a Guardians of Ga’hoole) is also a Warner Bros. movie and is scheduled for September.  Other Warner Bros pictures set to get the 3D works, some converted to 3D and other produced that way from the beginning with others potentially a combination, includes Clash of the Titans (April 2, 2010), Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (part I – November 19, 2010, part II  July 15, 2011), and Cats and Dogs 2 (July 30, 2011).

MORE KIDS STUFF

Tooned (13×30), a new live-action factual series from Breakthrough Films & Television will debut on TV Tropolis (Canada) on Friday, March 19, 2010 during the 11:30a, 7:30p, 10p time slots.  Described as a “docutainment” series, Tooned takes viewers on a trip through some of their favorite animated heroes and characters and interviews with a range of celebrities, creators, producers, animators and actors from some of the most popular Saturday morning animated series from years gone by.  Produced by Breakthrough Films & Television in association with Dale Burshtein Productions and Canwest Media, Tooned is hosted by an animated character named Howard, who has spent his career as an “animated extra,” and provides the series with a range of humor and cartoon trivia.  While the series is not specifically targeted to kids, they will no doubt be entertained along with their parents.

DHX Media Ltd launches its new Living Stories storybook apps for the iPhone/iPod Touch by DHX Interactive.  These animated storybooks offer new and classic kid’s stores letting kids/preschoolers read along on their own or with full English audio narration.  Users can also record their own narration for playback.  Titles to date include King Midas, The Tortoise and the Hare, and Hans Christian Anderson’s The Princess and the Pea. All three Living Stories apps are available on the iTunes App Store for $1.99/each.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Knightscove Media is acquiring Canadian-based youth lifestyle magazine, The Magazine from TSX Venture Exchange in a deal valued at US$631,417.  Targeted to kids/tweens 8-14, The Magazine launched in 2000 and published nine times a year (on stands and online), continues to focus on music, TV, movies, social issues, environment and health issues and features content from young Canadian writers, such as editorials, artwork and creative writing.  Ed Conroy and Becky Brown will continue to serve as Publisher and VP Sales and Marketing respectively under a three-year contract.

Marvel Entertainment expands its partnership with Reebok to include a new collection of kid’s sneakers featuring Spider-Man.  Building off of Reebok’s like of kid’s sneakers featuring Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk, which debuted in spring 2008, and the first Spider-Man line at Finish Line in 2009, this new line of co-branded sneakers will be available at Finish Line stores nationwide from spring 2010.  Reebok and Finish Line will support the new line of Marvel Spider-Man sneakers with in-store signage and graphics.

Archie Comics has launched a new redesigned ArchieComics .com.  The new site features customizable themes, new downloadable content, interactive games and a library of video and audio Archie Comics content.  Archie Comics has had a flurry of new activity including the its new comic book series Stan Lee’s Super Seven, along with the Archie Comics’ Red Circle superheroes with DC, Archie comics on iTunes, and development plans under way with Random House, IDW, and Dark Horse.
