Good morning, it’s Monday, March 8, 2010, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

Apple set a U.S. release date of April 3 for the Wi-Fi version of the iPad, pushing back the date by a few days amid rumors of production delays. Pricing remains the same with the entry level model starting at $499 for 16GB of storage; the Wi-Fi/3G models are due out in April beginning at $629. April 3 will also see the release of the iBooks app and its corresponding “iBookstore”, stocked with digital books from Hachette Book Group, HarperCollins Publishers, Macmillan Publishers, Penguin Group and Simon & Schuster. Apple also announced that all models of the iPad will be available in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, Switzerland and the UK from late April. Now for the bad news: iPhone users’ hopes of tethering their AT&T data plans to the device to avoid paying an additional monthly fee seem, well, hopeless. (Having to purchase a separate data plan is expected to quell demand for the device, but the telco has gone out of its way to blame 3G network problems on iPhone users and was not likely to give away iPad access for free.)

More than 3 million Cablevision video subscribers lost access to local ABC affiliate WABC-TV at 12:01 am on Sunday morning after the MSO and Disney could not reach a retransmission agreement. Cablevision, which claims that WABC-TV has been seeking $40 million/year for the right to broadcast the signal, began broadcasting customer alerts on the missing channel 7 Sunday morning, instructing viewers to watch WABC-TV with rabbit ears or via ABC.com or Hulu.com.
 
IFC.com
will utilize content delivery network Akamai to provide live HD video streaming from the South by Southwest (SxSW) film and media festival beginning March 12 in Austin, TX. Live video coverage will be enhanced with social features from ClipSynch, such as interactive chat and polling. iStreamPlanet will provide the encoding and production services.
 
Calculating final ComScore numbers following the Winter Olympics, Yahoo declared victory attracting an average of 32 million uniques from Feb. 12-28, compared to 19 million visitors posted for both NBCOlympics.com and ESPN. Yahoo! Sports claims it received more than 40 million total unique visitors during the Winter Olympics, breaking the monthly record in the online sports category.
 
ESPN360.com will feature live coverage of the Winter X Games Europe in the U.S. March 10-12. The event will also be broadcast live in 8 European Countries.

Social media start-up Cascaad has released a beta of its SuperTweet API. (“SuperTweets” is a term coined by Robert Scoble to describe metadata attached to brief social networking messages.) The API allows third-party Twitter applications to add smart contextual information and monetization elements to users posts, including semantic entity markup and “nonintrusive in-text affiliate commerce links” related to being what’s being discussed in the posts.
 
Media veteran Steve Sternberg has launched a media-themed blog dubbed The Sternberg Report offering opinions about TV, video, sports and pop culture. The blog, part of The Starry Eye Network, will occasionally be featured in the Discussion boards on the new Cynopsis.com. London-based Fixedia Group Ltd. launched Fixedia.com into beta, a LinkedIn style professional social network aimed toward media professionals. Participating companies from Europe, the U.S. Asia and the Middle East are offered the ability to showcase their work, list their clients, display a body of work and link employee profiles to their dedicated company page.

iVillage announced a partnership with EatingWell.com to lead EatingWell’s digital sales force through the creation of custom campaigns seeking to leverage the latter’s food and health expertise among iVillage’s community of women. EatingWell will continue to maintain its own sales team to sell print advertising in EatingWell Magazine.
 

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

 
Struggling triple-play TV, phone and high-speed overbuilder RCN has been bought by Boston-based private equity firm Abry Partners for $536 million or $1.2 billion, including the assumption of debt. The deal, expected to close during the second half of the year, represents a 22% premium over RCN’s closing price on March 4 and includes an option that allows the broadband service provider to shop for better offers.
 
T-Mobile
will not renew an exclusive mobile search deal with Yahoo, instead going with rival Google to provide search services along with search data provider Medio Systems, per paidcontent.org. Meanwhile, Yahoo has decided to embark upon a major reorganization of its mobile group after several high level departures including Mobile GM Mitch Lazar last week.
 
Continuing its recent buying spree, Google acquired software company DocVerse for a reported $25 million as a way to integrate the Google Apps cloud-based software suite to Microsoft Office. DocVerse makes a plug-in that allows users to edit Microsoft PowerPoint, Excel and Word Documents.

The worldwide Smartphone Application download market will reach $15.65 billion by 2013, according to Berlin-based mobile researcher research2guidance as the number of smartphone users balloon from 102 million in 2009 to 974 million. Companies have only scratched the surface of the medium as a way to target customers, says the company, as currently only 10% of Fortune 2000 companies are utilizing smartphone apps.

Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment announced it is developing a videogame around ABC’s The Bachelor for the Nintendo Wii and DS, due out this summer. Players can choose from a selection of avatars that best suit their personality, interact with multiple players and go through multiple “episodes” in their quest to receive the symbolic rose.

Companies that want to get into location-based publishing and social networking have a new affordable, easy-to-implement option. Location-based marketing platform Socialight introduced a new DIY Community Platform to enable companies to manage their own online communities using location-based tools. A template for locations-based services, the interface allows users to design and launch their own iPhone-based applications utilizing maps, photos, audio and video content. Socialite has also introduced a new open API, enabling developers to build their own apps for mobile, web, interactive signage, etc. The platform has countless applications – hotels, tourism, art, education – and should be a natural fit for media brands. For instance, Socialight is powering Discovery’s Travel Channel Go app for the iPhone, providing location-based travel programming, city guides and mapping services to local business. We are just beginning to see GPS effectively utilized in media applications – imagine the possibilities if the 10″ screen iPad can develop a critical mass of users.
