Good Morning. It’s Monday, March 27, 2006, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Cablevision has currently in its development slate a new type of DVR where the hard drive stays at the cable headend, rather than in your house. The operation for the consumer would be basically the same, just the storage is taken care of by the MSOs massive hard drives, with 80 gigabytes of space dedicated to each customer.  The plan is to test drive the DVR system with a group of Cablevision subscribers in New York this spring, and will then consider making it available to all of its customers.  There is a copyright question involved, and it has to do with geography.  For current market DVR systems such as Tivo, the customer maintains possession of his recordings in his home, which is allowed under the “fair use” clause of the copyright law.  The Cablevision DVR will record and store at the headend, and that may raise some legal issues.

Meanwhile, conversations have only just begun between Time Warner Cable in NYC and the four big broadcast networks, to provide on-demand access to the network’s most popular shows, for an additional monthly fee to customers, according to The New York Times

Tonight’s Finale:
MTV:  Real World/Road Rules Challenge at 10p

* MORE GOOD STUFF *TV Guide Channel is premiering a new one-hour weekly series, Square Off, about the business of television.  The talk show will be hosted by Brian Lowry and Andrew Wallenstein, and airs every Friday starting on April 7 at 8p. MyNetworkTV has entered into an affiliation agreement with Belo-owned KTTU/Tucson.  The latest to sign up brings the total affiliation body of MyNetworkTV to 65 stations, clearing more than 55% of the U.S.

The fifth season ender of FX’s The Shield aired on March 21st and delivered 2.0 million A18-49 to the set, and 3.2 million total viewers.  Production will begin in April for next season’s ten episodes, and are scheduled to join the schedule in early 2007.

OLN has renewed its exclusive deal with Professional Bull Riders by four years, taking the network thru 2010. Included in the deal is a  minimum of 22 regular season events plus the finals, and three Challenger Series events.

Today’s Trivia Question: There was a game show in the 70’s where contestants answered questions and then, from their positions overlooking a giant maze, guided their partners through the maze toward a target. The faster the completion, the bigger the prize.  What popular actor’s father was the host of this game show? (click here with your answer and be sure to include your name, company, city and time zone. Unofficial rules: Only the second four correct answers from each time zone will be mentioned; and once you’ve been mentioned in any of the Cynopsis editions, you can’t be mentioned again that calendar week.)
