CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Cynopsis

03/27/06

Good Morning. It’s Monday, March 27, 2006, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Cablevision has currently in its development slate a new type of DVR where the hard drive stays at the cable headend, rather than in your house. The operation for the consumer would be basically the same, just the storage is taken care of by the MSOs massive hard drives, with 80 gigabytes of space dedicated to each customer.  The plan is to test drive the DVR system with a group of Cablevision subscribers in New York this spring, and will then consider making it available to all of its customers.  There is a copyright question involved, and it has to do with geography.  For current market DVR systems such as Tivo, the customer maintains possession of his recordings in his home, which is allowed under the “fair use” clause of the copyright law.  The Cablevision DVR will record and store at the headend, and that may raise some legal issues.

Meanwhile, conversations have only just begun between Time Warner Cable in NYC and the four big broadcast networks, to provide on-demand access to the network’s most popular shows, for an additional monthly fee to customers, according to The New York Times

Tonight’s Finale:
MTV:  Real World/Road Rules Challenge at 10p

* MORE GOOD STUFF *TV Guide Channel is premiering a new one-hour weekly series, Square Off, about the business of television.  The talk show will be hosted by Brian Lowry and Andrew Wallenstein, and airs every Friday starting on April 7 at 8p. Peter Bart, Peter Gruber and Scott Sternberg  are the creators.

MyNetworkTV has entered into an affiliation agreement with Belo-owned KTTU/Tucson.  The latest to sign up brings the total affiliation body of MyNetworkTV to 65 stations, clearing more than 55% of the U.S.

The fifth season ender of FX’s The Shield aired on March 21st and delivered 2.0 million A18-49 to the set, and 3.2 million total viewers.  Production will begin in April for next season’s ten episodes, and are scheduled to join the schedule in early 2007.

OLN has renewed its exclusive deal with Professional Bull Riders by four years, taking the network thru 2010. Included in the deal is a  minimum of 22 regular season events plus the finals, and three Challenger Series events.

* NEW ORDERS / CASTING / DEVELOPMENT / PRODUCTION *Two new series coming to Comedy Central – a variety show called Naked Trucker and T-Bones, and an improv series called Halfway Home. According to Variety, the network has ordered up six episodes of Naked Trucker from Parallel Entertainment, and 10 episodes of Halfway Home. Naked Trucker stars Dave Allen and Dave Koechner as a couple of blue-collar guys recounting their trucking adventures. This series is looking at a fall debut.  As for Halfway Home, it  takes place in a halfway house with a group of parolees, and currently does not have a launch time.

Casting Notes …

ABC‘s untitled comedy pilot about two estranged sisters – one who grew up wealthy and the other not-nearly so wealthy – and are brought back together again, has cast Kaley Cuoco and Marisa Coughlin as the two sisters.

Oliver Hudson joins the cast of the CBS comedy pilot The Weekend about three guys.  The other two guys are Kevin Hart and Chris O’Dowd.

Marion Ross (aka Mrs. Cunningham) returns to primetime TV with her casting in the ABC pilot Community Service, starring Jay Mohr and Brittany Daniel.  Ross will play the role of the town ding-a-ling.

Also at ABC, comedy pilot Women of a Certain Age starring Heather Locklear as a widow, has cast Illeana Douglas as one of Locklear’s two best friends.

Casting Call:  Queer Eye is looking to cast a gay male couple who wants a makeover before saying “I Do.”   You both need to live within a 25-mile radius of Manhattan and be available for taping during May or June. Email your engagement/love story along with photos and contact information to Leah at [email protected], no later than April 4th.  And congratulations!

* EXECUTIVE MOVES *Airikuh Anderson is upped to Business Development Manager for CBS Radio Sales in the Los Angeles office. Airikuh will now oversee all new business efforts for the CBS Radio Sales LA, including helping her team identify targets and present innovative business solutions to prospective advertisers.

The History Channel presents This Day in History:
1958: Nikita Khruschev became the Soviet Premier. Khruschev would lead the Soviet Union to prominence as a global power with influence throughout the world. As the primary Soviet Leader during the Cold War era, Khruschev was known for his bold opposition to the United States and his bitter standoff with President John F. Kennedy during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Khruschev maintained his role as Premier until his retirement in 1964.

Today’s Trivia Question: There was a game show in the 70’s where contestants answered questions and then, from their positions overlooking a giant maze, guided their partners through the maze toward a target. The faster the completion, the bigger the prize.  What popular actor’s father was the host of this game show? (click here with your answer and be sure to include your name, company, city and time zone. Unofficial rules: Only the second four correct answers from each time zone will be mentioned; and once you’ve been mentioned in any of the Cynopsis editions, you can’t be mentioned again that calendar week.)
