Good morning, it’s Monday, March 24, 2008, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
CBS‘ re-cancellation of Jericho is being held up as more proof that internet popularity does not necessarily translate into on-air success. The show made headlines last year when the network heeded to non-stop pressure waged by hardcore fans on chat groups and fans sites, culminating with thousands of bags of peanuts being mailed to network executives. Ratings of the show have steadily declined after it kicked off its second season with 7.2 million viewers in February, during the originals-depleted Writers Strike.
With most kids carrying their own cell phones and spending more and more time on them, Nickelodeon‘s huge digital push will also include a trio branded mobile web sites. Sites geared around teen network The N and parent-targeted ParentsConnect.com are planned for later this year. The network’s mobile flagship wap.nick.com has already launched, featuring promotional tie-ins to on air shows, games and contests.
EA and Starz Media are pitching in to create an animated movie to serve as a prequel to the sci-fi horror game Dead Space. The game itself picks up where the Dead Space graphic novel left off, aboard the futuristic mining ship the USG Ishimura. Film Roman is producing the Dead Space movie in alliance with Digital Tetra Inc., in Korea.
The YouTube community has spoken. You’ll see some familiar faces among the 2007 YouTube Video Award winners, including the Tay Zonday (the Chocolate Rain guy) and Ethan – the Laughing Baby who laughs so hard he knocks himself over. But there are several others (including Obama Girl and Chris Crocker “Leave Brittney Alone”) who came up short in their respective categories. Perhaps the feeling was they already enjoyed enough attention.
A new service called picApp launched to provide bloggers and independent publishers with an archive of copyrighted images they can use for free alongside editorial content. The San Francisco-based start up has signed deals with Getty Images, Corbis and others to sell small ads attached to each image in order to monetize the pics.
Desktop-based online TV service Joost plans to launch a browser plug in later this year to allow users to view shows online without having to download the firm’s client software, according to Portfolio.
More and more cities are backing away from plans to subsidize the rollout of free WiFi networks, and cities with existing networks such as Portland, OR and Tempe, AR are abandoning them to save money, according to The New York Times.
Dish Network, among the winners of the FCC’s 700 MHz wireless auction, may use the “E block” spectrum the company licensed to launch a mobile TV service, according to analyst reports. Dish paid $711 million for the spectrum through partner Frontier Wireless.
Songwriter and artist rights’ advocate Billy Bragg argues that unsigned musicians who utilize social networks such as MySpace and Bebo are being unfairly left out of the compensation equation in an opinion piece in The New York Times. Bebo was able to fetch $850 million from AOL because musicians’ work helped grow its user base to over 40 million, he writes, but were not compensated for the value they helped create.
The decision to drop tedious registration requirements and give CBS Audience network members and other affiliated sites one-click access seems to have paid off. Traffic to CBSSport.com‘s NCAA March Madness On Demand section spiked 122% during the first day of the tournament, according to CBS Interactive, with a total of 1.75 million uniques loading the video player. CBS also reported 571,297 VIP registrants (up 22% from a year ago) as well as 1.22 million clicks on the new “Boss Button,” which reveals goofy consumption trends.
Fewer than 5% of users who download movies and TV shows legally from the internet ever manage to port them over for viewing on a larger screen television set, according to a new Harris Interactive study commissioned by DRM management provider Macrovision. Some 43% of the 2,254 surveyed said they downloaded media legitimately from the web; 25% reported downloading TV shows regularly and another 15% said they watched movies. The study’s intention is to point out how DRM restrictions severely limit user behavior
Stefan Goldby was upped from Head of Music Programming to VP/Programming by online entertainment site maniaTV. Stefan, one of maniaTV’s founding members, will remain in the company’s Los Angeles headquarters and oversee all new and existing programming.
Sports Illustrated unlocked the SI Vault giving online users access to a treasure trove of sports content including 50,000 stories, 2,800 covers and 500,000 photographs from the pages of Sports Illustrated magazine. SI editors and designers have done a nice job making the content easily searchable and have even baked in a Wiki allowing users to contribute and amend entries. Truveo is powering the site’s video search feature, tracking down clips of famous plays. Type in “buzzer beater” for a huge selection of memorable last-second shots.
