Cynopsis: Kids!
03/22/10

Good morning. It’s Monday, March 22, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Real life father and son actors Stellan Skarsgard (Good Will Hunting, mama Mia!, Angels and Demons) and Alexander Skarsgard (True Blood, Zoolander) will lend their voices to 3D animated father and son characters (Moominpapa and his son Moomintroll) in the family-targeted 3D animated movie Moomins and the Comet Chase.  Additionally, Peter Stormare (Fargo, Bad Boys II, The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus) joins the voice cast as Snufkin.  From Finnish production company Oy Filmkompaniet, the movie will directed by Maria Lindberg from a script by Joel Backstrom, Iivo Baric, Anders Larsson and Minna Karvonen.  The movie will also feature original music by Bjork along with Andrzej Rokicki.  Currently in post-production and set for release in fall 2010, the movie will be supported with a worldwide publishing and merchandising efforts, including new Moomins books in 20+ countries via deals with publishers including MacMillan an Penguin Books.  NonStop Sales is handling worldwide sales for the film.  Based on Finland’s famous Moomins books and comic strip created by author/illustrator Tove Jansson, the property celebrates its 65th anniversary this year.  Moomins and the Comet Chase is the first Nordic stereoscopic 3D feature film ever.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

George Lucas is working on a new Star Wars animated series  and this one is for preschoolers and kindergarteners, per IESB.  No  really  it isn’t April 1 just yet.  Lucas and the folks at Skywalker Ranch are in pre-production on a series based on the Star Wars: Galactic Heroes, a line of Star Wars toys aimed at younger kids.  The series is reportedly operating under the working title Squishies, and there is a director on board.  While Cartoon Network has had great success with the animated series Star Wars: Clone Wars, there is no word about a network deal.

Though Marvel has not confirmed this, word is that Chris Evans (Fantastic Four, and the upcoming comic book based movies The Losers and Scott Pilgrim vs. the World) has been offered the role of Captain in America (and his alter ego Steve Rogers), per THR.  The deal would see Evans play Captain America in three movies Captain America movies and three Avengers movies, as well as making appearances in other upcoming Marvel movies.  The first movie, Captain America: The First Avenger, will be directed by Joe Johnston and is currently slated for release on July 22, 2011.

Bedrock Studios, Cary Granat and Ed Jones’ partnership, has tapped Jeff Stockwell to adapt Madeleine L’Engle’s fabulous 1962 young adult sci-fi book A Wrinkle in Time for the big screen, per THR.  Stockwell previously served as co-writer on several other young-adult novels including Bridge to Terabithia, which Granat and his then Walden Media produced for Disney, and also co-wrote The Dangers Lives of Altar Boys, based on Chris Fuhrman book of the same name for Jodie Foster and ThinkFilm.  Stockwell also has movie adaptations of the books Kiki’s Delivery Service and The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane in development.  Additionally, his original screenplay Our Wild Life (f/k/a Peaceable Kingdom) is set up with Mandalay Pictures at New Line with Walter Salles signed on to direct.

Paramount remake of the family targeted The Monster Squad is moving forward with and Rob Cohen and Platinum Dunes, Michael Bay, Brad Fuller and Andrew Form’s banner, set to produce, per Deadline.  Cohen, who was also a producer on the first version of the movie, may direct the movie.  The producers are now searching for a writer for the project.  Released in 1987, the original Monster Squad movie was penned by Shane Black and Fred Dekker, with Dekker directing.

MORE KIDS STUFF

My Friend Boo is a new preschool-aimed animated series that focuses on environmental issues, in an age appropriate way, such as water conservation and climate control.  Supported by the European Commission‘s fund for the environment, the series is produced by illustrator/animator/author Curtis Jobling (production designer on Bob the Builder, author/illustrator Frankenstein’s Cat) and debuted in five European countries last week.  The series will be available in 11 languages across Europe from June.  My Friend Boo will also be available in schools, social clubs and via other European organizations, such as Europe Region of World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts.  Each episode is accompanied by free downloadable education packs for teachers/schools.  The series follows a group of young kids and their magical dog Boo, who takes them on environmental-centric adventures.

Toronto-based Tricon Films & Television heads to MIPTV where it will showcase its new animated kids’ series Adventures in Booga Booga Land (26×11).  Targeted to K6-11, the series is produced by Cream Lake Productions, with Tricon holding the worldwide distribution rights.  The series revolves around two new friends, Marty the Monkey and Gerard the Giraffe.  Tricon will also be offering its program The Next Star, the completed series as well as the format rights. Additionally, Tricon also holds the worldwide distribution rights to the unique tween/teen sketch show The Paul Telner Project and the family-targeted special Christmas Dreams.

Imira Entertainment completes sales of the Normaal Animation produced 2D animated comedy Tangerine & Cow (78×7), just ahead of MIPTV.  Z@pp (The Netherlands) acquires the public free TV rights for the series, with Cartoon Network taking the pay TV rights for Spain and TV Catalunya (Catalunya) the free TV rights.  Additionally, RTP (Portugal) and Channel 5 (Lithuania) also picked up the series, while Al Sayyar (Middle East) takes the TV and home entertainment rights.  Further home entertainment and licensing deals have been signed with Kids Planet (Netherlands and Belgium), and Pourquoi Pas (France).  Based on Jacques Azam’s comic book Chico Mandarine, Tangerine and Cow is a co-production of Imira and Normaal.

Disney Studios Home Entertainment will release its new full-length CG animated movie, Tinker Bell and the Great Fairy Rescue, on September 21, 2010 on DVD and as a Blu-ray Combo Pack (Blu-ray and bonus DVD of the film and movie download).  Produced by Disney Toon Studios, the new Disney Fairies adventure movie is set before Tinker Bell’s time with Peter Pan, when she discovered by Lizzy, a young girl in need of a friend.  When Tink puts her own safety in jeopardy, the fairies of Pixie Hallow set out to save her and the future of all fairies.

MARKETING/LICENSING

VIZ Media and McDonald’s have partnered for a special Naruto Happy Meal program in Latin America.  VIZ Media handles licensing for Naruto across North and South America.  The Naruto Happy Meal, which kicked off in Mexico last month, makes its way this month to locations in Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and Panama, and beginning in April will be available restaurants in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Columbia, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela.  The McDonald’s Naruto Happy meal features collectable figures based on several characters based on the teen-targeted animated and manga graphic novel series Naruto, which was created by Masashi Kishimoto.

Bluewater Productions ( www.blueaterprod.com ) launches its new Fame biography comic series this May with issues focusing on Fame: Lady GaGa and Fame: Robert Pattinson, followed in June by Fame: Kristin Stewart (32 pages/$3.99).  Penned by Kim Sherman and featuring artwork by Warren Martineck (Marvel, DC Comics), the Stewart edition will be available with two different covers.  The first, created by Juanmar Studios, attaches like a puzzle to the Pattinson issue, with the other cover created by artist Randy Green (X-Men, Witchblade).  Future Fame issues will center on the lives of Taylor Swift and David Beckham.  Bluewater Productions’ other biographic comic series include Female Force and Political Power.

Aardman Animation‘s Wallace and Gromit will be featured in a new utility consumer ad campaign for the UK’s npower.  Set to debut on April 1, 2010, the campaign includes two commercials (a 30 and a 40 second commercials), created by Aardman and VCCP.  The spots are designed to encourage consumers, in a humorous way of course, to be knowledgeable about their current energy usage and how to cut down their usage through the use of “smartpower monitors.”  The two spots also features a character named Penny, created by Aardman, who is a call center operator for npower.

Correction: The correct spelling of the new Emily the Strange licensee in Italy is Franco Panini Scuola.

Answer to Yesterday’s Trivia:  The original storyline for this character included him being stomped to death and then returning as a ghost “conscience” for the title character.  That was reworked when the story was made into what is now a classic film, but he remains as the conscience of the story.  He’s also quite dapper with a top had, ascot and tails.  Who is he? JIMINY CRICKET  Kudos to:  Sean Broedow-USA Network/NY; Danielle Larson-Hasbro/Pawtucket; Wendy Stone-Golf Channel/Orlando; Ellen Harter Wall-Disney FamilyFun/Northampton; Clover Keyes Roy-Pacific Technical Group/Burbank; Jim Wyatt-Film Roman Starz Media; Burbank

Today’s Trivia Question:  Daggett and Norbert were the stars of what series?  (Email [email protected] with your answer and be sure to include your name, company, city and time zone. Unofficial rules: Only the second four correct answers from each time zone will be mentioned; and once you’ve been mentioned in any of the Cynopsis editions, you can’t be mentioned again that calendar week.)
