Cynopsis: DIGITAL

Good morning, it’s Monday, March 22, 2010, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
Leading up to the launch of the iPad on April 3, Apple is working feverishly to line up content partners for the device including TV and movie studios and book, magazine and newspaper publishers. But the complexity of the deals and concerns over the lack of Flash support is slowing down negotiations, according to the Wall Street Journal. The company has given up on the idea of TV subscriptions for now and is instead trying to convince studios to reduce the price of most TV shows to 99 cents. Apple also officially opened the device to developers, setting a deadline of March 27 for apps that would like to be considered for the iPad’s launch.
MSG will become the first network to broadcast a hockey game in 3D in an upcoming match-up between the New York Rangers and New York Islanders. The game will shot using 3ality Digital’s image-capturing technology and also be exhibited via RealD’s 3D stereoscopic Cinema Processing System in a special viewing party at the Theater at Madison Square Garden.
Coming off its fracas with Macmillan over e-book pricing, Amazon is revisiting its agreements with publishers trying to get companies to lock in prices for three-year periods, per the NYTimes. With a number of new electronic book readers hitting the market this year, both Apple and Amazon want publishers to guarantee them the lowest market prices.
Facebook co-founder and online Obama campaigner Chris Hughes introduced a new website dubbed Jumo, designed to be a social networking platform for individuals and non-profits “working to change the world.”
Twitter newbie Conan O’Brien has launched a contest with sponsor American Express to promote his new “Legally Prohibited From Being Funny on Television Tour.” To enter, follow @americanexpress on Twitter and tweet, “Hey @americanexpress I want to be with Coco in (city you want to see show in). Pick me! http://bit.ly/bEUqsh #amexConan.”
The FCC is considering a plan that would sell off a portion of “D-block” spectrum during the first half of 2011 that didn’t initially sell during the 2008 spectrum auction, reports Reuters. The spectrum, formerly reserved for public safety-related services, would be offered for commercial services this time around including smaller wireless carriers such as T-Mobile.
Smartphone maker Palm, Inc. saw its stock fall by as much as 25% on Friday after reporting less-than-stellar Q3 results. The Palm Pre has become lost in the shuffle of competing offerings such as the iPhone and multiple Android devices. Palm’s smartphone sell-through for Q3 was 408,000 units – down 29% from the FY 2010 2Q and down 15% year-over-year.
Mad Money host Jim Cramer’s financial site TheStreet.com is the target of an SEC investigation looking into the way the site is recording revenues of former subsidiary Promotions.com, per the NYPost.
TV station mobile DTV trade group, The Open Mobile Video Coalition, released a report from IDC claiming that its “one to many” method of broadcasting to mobile devices is faster, more reliable and more scalable than on demand mobile streaming. Although broadcasters have mostly been experimenting with free services, IDC Broadband & Digital Marketplace Group VP Danielle Levitas notes that the technology can also support multiple models including subscription services to premium channels, a la carte access to other media, cached recording and localized and targeted advertising.
Facebook users are more loyal to News and Media websites than are visitors from Google News, according to a new Hitwise analysis. Among the top 5 Print Media websites in the week ending March 6, 78% of Facebook users were returning visitors compared to 67% from Google News. The figures are almost identical for Broadcast Media, with a 77% returning rate for Facebook compared to 64% for Google News.
~ GADGETS & APPS ~
Preparing for the onslaught of the iPad, Amazon released a free version of its Kindle e-book software that runs on Mac computers, enabling Mac users to purchase electronic books form the Kindle store.
French Language cable network TVMonde has launched a language-themed educational iPhone app aimed at English speaking audiences. The 7 Jours sur la Planete (7 Days on the Planet) app identifies 30 vocabulary words featured in a weekly news program, then quizzes users with anagrams, word games, puzzles and other exercises. The $4.99 app was developed with Novedia.
Online advertising start-up DoubleVerify has hired Chris Little as Director of Sales for the Western region, a newly created position based in San Francisco. Prior to joining DoubleVerify, Chris served as Director of Northwest and Midwest sales for Jumptap.
Upsets and close games have made this year’s Big Dance a big hit and digital platforms have benefited greatly. (Let’s hope you took a number of fliers in your office bracket pool.) CBSSports.com says its March Madness on Demand video application racked up record views during the first day of this year’s NCAA Tournament, recording 3.4 million hours of live video and audio streaming – up 20% from last year. The newly updated “boss button” (this year’s fake flowchart was designed by Dilbert cartoonist Scott Adams) recorded 1.7 million clicks on one day, just a million short of the entire total from last season. The most watched game from Thursday was the double-overtime match-up between Florida and BYU, registering 521,000 hours of streaming video and audio. Beautiful spring weather over the weekend allowed March Madness fans to unglue themselves from their TVs or computers and catch the games on CBS Interactive’s $10 March Madness iPhone app, which offers decent quality video to each and every game, depending on how good AT&T’s network works in your location. You can toggle easily back and forth between games and get an overlay of player stats for individual teams.
