Cynopsis: Kids!

03/16/09

Good morning. It’s Monday, March 16, 2009, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

KidsCo has commissioned its first original production, a new arts and crafts series entitled Jass Time! (10×90 seconds).  Produced in the UK by markthree media, Jass Time! will air across the KidsCo channel throughout Europe, Russia, Middle East, Africa and Asia.  Hosted by Jass Ahluwalia (19), the short-form series features demonstrations of simple craft projects (e.g. puppets, masks, a crown and jewelry etc.) with household items.  KidsCo is a joint venture of NBC Universal, Cookie Jar Group and Corus Entertainment Inc.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

New Line is set to make a 3D sequel to the 3D movie Journey to the Center of the Earth, which opened July 2008, according to The Hollywood Reporter and Variety.  While the first Journey to the Center of the Earth is based on Jules Verne’s book of the same name, the storyline from the sequel comes from scribe Richard Outten‘s script Mysterious Travels: The Lost Map of Treasure Island.  Outten’s concept begins with the conceit that stories including Jonathan Swift’s Gulliver’s Travels, Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island and Verne’s Mysterious Island all took place on the same island.  Brendan Fraser and Josh Hutcherson as expected to reprise their roles for the sequel, and director Eric Brevig also returns to helm the picture and take part in script development.  New Line plans to fully finance the sequel, different from the first picture that was co-financed by Walden Media.

Screenwriter Joe Stillman (Shrek, the new Gulliver’s Travels among others) will pen the script to the high-concept mixed live-action/CGI feature Alien Zoo, per Variety.  The Warner Bros. and Unique Features family-targeted comedy that is described as “Jurassic park with aliens.”

MORE KIDS STUFF

Discovery Networks Asia-Pacific, a division of Discovery Communications, launches a Discovery Kids weekend programming block (Saturdays and Sundays) on Discovery Channel in major markets across the region beginning this April.  The 1-hr block will launch on Discovery Channel in Southeast Asia, Taiwan, Australia and New Zealand in April and in Japan in July.  Discovery Channel launched a half-hour Discovery Kids block in India on January 24.  The new block will feature a range of programming including Land of the Mammoth, Alien Planet, Dinosaur Planet, Ultimate Guide: Human Body, Planet of Life: The Insect World, Mean Machines, Mummies of Peru  Chiribaya, and Inside the Space Station.

BRB Internacional inks broadcast deals for its animated series Papawa (104×7 or 52×13) with Mediaset (Italy) and RTP (Portugal).  Aimed at K6-10, Papawa is produced in Catalonia by Screen 21 and co-produced by Televisio de Catalunya.  BRB expects to announce further deals later this month at MIPTV.  The series will debut later this year on a range of networks including Malaysia and Brunei via satellite on Astro TV.

Canadian-based producer of kid-aimed web and casual game content zinc Roe releases Arctic Shuffle, its first kid-targeted game title for Apple’s iPhone and iTouch.  Arctic Shuffle’s ($2.99) initial release includes 52 levels.

The musical stage adaptation of Little House on the Prairie is heading out on tour this fall on a multi-city tour.  The tour will begin with a five-week run at the Paper Mill Playhouse (September 10-October 10) in Milburn New Jersey, per Variety.  The, show, which premiered to record sales at Minneapolis’ Guthrie Theater in August 2008, will again star Melissa Gilbert as Ma.  Some of you will recall that Gilbert played Laura Ingalls Wilder in the TV series based on the heroine’s books.  Other stops on the tour include St. Paul, Denver, Toronto, Houston, Tempe and Sacramento.

MIP TV Program Call: If your company will be attending and showcasing programming at MIP TV 2009 in Cannes, France, at the end of next month, Cynopsis will send out a special MIP TV Shopping Guide edition the Thursday before the conference. To have your programming included, please send only the following info for your top 5 shows: title, availability date, number of episodes, length, type (i.e., movie, series, special, etc.), genre, your terms (barter, cash, etc.) and names and contact info of those attending from your company. If your company is interested in being included in this free guide, please send the details to [email protected] by Friday, March 20, 2009.
