Internet and social media outlets became indispensable in searching for information regarding loved ones in Japan and media outlets relied more than ever on amateur footage shot from the ground and uploaded to the internet. Google directed users to its Japanese Quake Person Finder in English and Japanese. YouTube‘s Citizen Tube attracted some dramatic footage of the quake, as did CNN’s iReport site. With phone lines down and mobile networks jammed, Tweets exceeded 1,000/minute on Twitter. The Twitter Japan blog posted a list of popular earthquake-related hashtags. The platform was also utilized for fundraising efforts – Microsoft asked Twitter followers of its Bing account to donate up to $100,000, and for every retweet of the message the company pledged $1 to quake victims. Lady Gaga reached out to her Twitter followers to buy a “We Pray for Japan” bracelet to raise money for relief.
 

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

 
Video sharing site Hulu may be paring down its board in an effort to gain more independence from it network owners, with Disney CEO Bob Iger and News Corp. COO Chase Carey possibly leaving their posts, reports the WSJ. Media owners Disney, Fox and NBCU currently supply 3 seats each on the 12-member board, but Comcast has already agreed to vacate its board seats as a condition of its approved merger with NBC Universal.
 
NBC
has posted the 10th (and final?) episode of The Cape online after the show was pulled from the air following the Feb. 28 episode.

 
~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

 
Facebook is looking to expand into the limited-time deal business to grab a share of the fast-growing market pioneered by Groupon and LivingSocial, reports Bloomberg. The company will begin testing the feature soon in Atlanta, San Francisco, Dallas, Austin and San Diego, offering localized discounts and encouraging users to share the deals with their friends.
 
Social communications platform CloudTalk unveiled a new Partner Program enabling mobile and web app developers to integrate voice, text and rich media components. CloudTalk enables users to send and receive text and voice messages by voice. For instance, atzip introduced a new free social meet-up application that connects people who share similar interests and hobbies. Through atzip, users can choose to talk or text with one another by sending “zip-ins.”
 

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

 
Facebook marketing specialist Buddy Media announced a new partnership with L’Oreal to give more than 4,000 salons nationwide that carry L’Oreal products access to the Buddy Media Platform.
 

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

 
A bankruptcy judge approved the sale of brick-and-mortar video chain Blockbuster for $290 million to a group of senior bondholders led by hedge fund Monarch Alternative Capital. The ruling gives the movie studios a chance to recover more of what’s owed to them and staves off immediate liquidation of Blockbuster’s assets.
 
Comcast is launching 100 Mbps ultra high-speed internet service and switched voice trunk service for businesses in California, the former reaching speeds of up to 60 times faster than a 1.5 Mbps T1 line.
 

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

 
As thousands fought the crowds to get a hold of the new iPad, IDC released figures counting more than 6 million tablets shipped during Q4 of 2010, up from 4.5 million the previous quarter. Apple’s market share dropped from 93% in Q3 to 73% in Q4 with the release of Samsung’s Galaxy Tab, the #2 tablet during the holiday season (17% mkt. share). While Motorola’s Xoom is considered a worthy competitor to the iPad in terms of functionality, its high sticker price ($600 for WiFi only, $800 on Verizon unsubsidized) will relegate it to a niche position. The researcher now expects more than 50 million tablets to be shipped worldwide during 2011, with Apple maintaining a 70%-80% mkt. share.
 
ComScore‘s monthly search report also had Google’s share of U.S. searches ever so slightly decline in February to 65.4%, down from 65.6% in Jan. Microsoft’s Bing search engine had 13.6% share, up by about a half percentage point. Yahoo’s share was unchanged at 16.1%. Last month, Google reported that it changed the way it carries out web searches to feature more “high-quality” sites, affecting some 12% of queries.

How’s this for confusing – many Verizon-powered iPhones actually fell back an hour early Sunday morning, reports Mashable. A similar bug affected AT&T iPhone users on New Years Eve early this year. Some AT&T phones were also reportedly affected this time around.
 
The digital makeover of the TODAY show continues with the launch of a new free video-centric iPad app, featuring searchable clips, segments and video transcripts from Today.com.
 
Live concert portal Baeblemusic is launching a new video-powered Chrome App on the Google Chrome Webstore this morning, allowing Chrome web and Google TV users to access its library of music-themed programming including over 400 archived concerts.

Given the show’s digital pedigree – South-by-Southwest very much gave birth to the popularity of Twitter and Foursquare among the social media movers and shakers ­- it makes sense that the conference should open itself up more to these platforms. SXSW Interactive, for one, is streaming more of its happenings on SXSW.com this year. (PepsiCo, which has again set up its own stage at the Austin Convention Center, is sponsoring the effort in part to promote its PepsiCo10 program expanding to Europe this year.) Check in this week for “interactive keynotes” from Felicia Day, Black Mycoskie and Bruce Sterling – sessions start at 12:30pm and 2:00pm every day. Live video sites Livestream.com and Ustream.tv are also streaming a slew of live music performances from annual events such as PureVolume House and the Rolling Stone concert. (Queens of the Stone Age are headlining the Rolling Stone show this year.) Livestream has a hand in a wide range of events, interviews and performances, powering both IFC’s SXSW site and Facebook Live‘s presence. Aston Kutcher, who actually has more Facebook fans than Twitter followers, appeared in his element during his Facebook Live interview, conducted by Facebook marketing director Randi Zuckerberg. He spoke of his foundation’s “Real Men Don’t Buy Girls” social media campaign launching in April to increase awareness about sexual slavery.
