Cynopsis: DIGITAL
03/12/12
Good morning. It’s Monday, March 12, 2012, and this is your first early morning digital briefing. If you would like to read this or any other Cynopsis editions online, click here.
With the first ever Digital Content NewFronts just around the corner, I had a quick chat with Wayne Powers, senior vice president of North American sales at Yahoo!, regarding the upcoming event and some of the digital content services offered by the company.
What is the purpose of the Digital Content NewFronts, and what should it mean for advertisers?
The Digital Content NewFronts (DCNF) is the industry coming together to showcase the quality content that we offer at scale and our original video programming it’s not just about ad inventory. With Americans having streamed 43.5 billion videos in December 2011 (up 44% since December 2010, according to comScore), brands and agency demand for strong, quality content is increasing and the DCNF will serve to create a marketplace where providers and advertisers can connect.
What’s the state of digital video at Yahoo?
We have also seen significant growth in video. In October 2011, we announced our content alliance with ABC News, and later we added a slate of video series geared towards women, featuring talent such as Morgan Spurlock of “Supersize Me” and Judy Greer of “Arrested Development.” Just last month, comedian Bill Maher kicked off the new Yahoo! Comedy Channel, part of the programming that we offer on Yahoo! Screen, that will feature a series of short-form comedy shows.
Where does Yahoo! Screen fit into the company’s overall digital content distribution strategy?
With advertisers increasingly looking for quality, premium content, we will continue to provide brands with the right environments to reach their audiences, including Yahoo! Screen. Every day, millions of users come to our sites to view our quality original programming and Yahoo! Screen provides us with a unique digital destination for reaching even more users.
Why should digital advertisers and publishers be on Yahoo! Livestand? What tools does it offer them? What kind of reach does it have?
Livestandfrom Yahoo! is a personalized, living magazine that offers publishers the ability to bring their content to life for consumers and it changes the game in digital advertising for brands. On Livestand, brands have access to an unmatched creative canvas with ad formats that combine the interactive capabilities of a tablet with real emotional engagement to deliver a more engaging advertising experience.
In Yahoo!’s opinion: define the relationship between digital advertising and digital video content?
Digital advertising and digital video content complement each other and you need both to support these initiatives. Yahoo!’s original video programming, for example, puts advertising content in a relevant content that sparks higher levels of message and brand awareness as well as engagement.
NBCUniversal is officially joining the slate of media companies presenting at the upcoming Digital Content NewFronts. Marking it as the company’s first-ever digital upfront, NBCUniversal host its presentation on May 1 in New York City. The company says it will “present innovative solutions for marketers across its vast portfolio of web, social and mobile properties for the standalone digital networks: DailyCandy, Fandango, iVillage and Television Without Pity, as well as TV-related digital properties for Access Hollywood, Bravo, Chiller, CNBC, E!, G4, Golf Channel, NBC Owned Television Stations, MSNBC, Mun2, NBC, the NBC Sports Group, Oxygen, Sprout, Style, Syfy, Telemundo, The Weather Channel, TODAY, USA Network and Xfinity TV.”
White-label video management and publishing company thePlatform has launched a new suite of tools that enable TV providers to create tailored content packages and promotions as part of their own TV Everywhere service. At the core of thePlatform’s new mpx video publishing system are two new features: Subscription Packages and Subscriber Groups. The former enables operators to build sub-groups of content packages around things like genres, TV series, actors, holidays and more, which can be pulled from content libraries that span beyond what is currently available on linear TV or VOD catalogs, and which can then be delivered to connected devices. The latter enables operators to segment consumers based on a wide range of criteria, e.g. subscription package, geography, acceptable content rating, device type and more. Consumers can belong to more than one segment. These tools are available for free to mpx clients and are currently in trials with multiple TV operators around the globe, says the company.
Instagram is close to securing a new round of financing of around $40 million, which could net a valuation of as much as $500 million, reports The Wall Street Journal. It would be almost 20 times the amount the maker of the popular photo-sharing app was worth around this time last year. Boasting over 15 million users, the app is currently available only in the Apple App Store, but the company is working on a version for the Android Market. The report notes the potential struggle for Instragam to build a viable and profitable business model, as the app is designed to devote a lot of its visual geography to the photos taken by users, thus not leaving much space for things like display advertising. Nonetheless, it’s a highly popular app and is used by the aforementioned millions of users, including prominent personalities such as Barack Obama, Justin Bieber and Snoop Dogg, as well as brands like Urban Outfitters for promotional purposes.

According to Kantar Media Compete‘s February 2012 report on search market share, overall search activity declined nearly 7% across all engines from the previous month. Google-powered engines (Google and AOL) fell 0.7 percentage points from January 2012, while Bing-powered engines (Bing and Yahoo!) picked up that share that Google-powered engines lost. Overall, Google-powered engines account for 66.8% of the core search market, with Bing-powered engines carving out the other 33.2%, according to the report. Bing alone now represents 17.6% of the search market. AOL and Yahoo! also witnessed share gains, each increasing by 0.1 percentage points over the previous month.
comScore‘s Video Metrix service has released data for how online video performed in January in the United Kingdom. Online video reached 34.2 million U.K. internet users, representing 80% of the total U.K. internet audience. Google Sites are the top destination for online video over there as well, with nearly 30 million unique viewers, followed by VEVO (11.7 million), Facebook (8.3 million), BBC Sites (7.5 million) and Viacom Digital (7.2 million) in that order. Interestingly, the 34 million viewers watched a total of almost 8.4 billion videos. The report finds that even though the size of the U.K. online video audience hasn’t grown in the past six months, the number of video content viewed and total time users spent engaging with a video has, indicating a rise in U.K. viewer engagement with online video. In addition, 64.1% of the U.K. online video audience was exposed to video ads in January, with the 15-24 age demographic accounting for the top audience in terms of both unique viewers and engagement.
By the end of 2011, NM Incite tracked over 181 million blogs around the world, up from 36 million just five years earlier, to get a better understanding of the blogging world, including how it affects online buzz. In the report, the company found that over 6.7 million people publish blogs on blogging websites, and an additional 12 million do so through social networks. When broken down, women make up the majority of bloggers, and over half of bloggers are aged 18-34. In addition, seven out of 10 bloggers have gone to college; about one in three bloggers are moms; 52% have children under the age of 18 in the home; and bloggers are twice as likely to post/comment on consumer-generated video sites such as YouTube. The report also captured some data on blogging sites in general:
- Three out of the top 10 social networking sites are for consumer-generated blogs: Blogger, Tumblr and WordPress
- Blogger is the largest with 46 million U.S. visitors during October 2011 (second only to Facebook).
- Tumblr is the fastest-growing social networking or blog site, more than doubling its audience since last year.
- Overall the three top blogging sites reach 80 million unique visitors, or more than one in four active online users in the U.S. in October 2011.
- Pinterest is growing fast: over 10 million unique U.S. visitors in December 2011, which is more than double its numbers from October of the same year.
Interactive One attracted 9.9 million unique visitors to its portfolio of web properties in February 2012, according to Omniture SiteCatalyst. It marks a 30% growth over January 2012 and a 70% increase year-over-year, and stands as another record-breaking month for the digital media company focused toward Black Americans. One of the largest growth areas in February for the company was social media, with 2 million users visiting Interactive One sites on Facebook and other social media channels, which represented a 169% month-over-month increase.
AMC and RockYou have announced The Walking Dead Social Game, which will take players inside the world of the TV show and have their own adventures and interact with characters from the series. Players control their own group of survivors, which can include their friends on Facebook, as they try to fend off zombies and survive the post-apocalyptic wasteland that is the world of the show. Users can sign up for the game on AMC’s Facebook page for The Walking Dead, as well as the game’s official Facebook page. The game, which was developed by Eyes Wide Games in conjunction with AMC and RockYou, will be available this April.
Viacom International Media Networks (VIMN) The Americas, a unit of Viacom, has appointed Rene Rodriguez to the position of Vice President of Digital Media for VIMN The Americas (Latin America, U.S. Hispanic and Canada). In his new role, Rodriguez will oversee all strategic and operational aspects of interactive digital media, along with ensuring the integration and expansion of both online and mobile businesses. In addition, he will also lead the development and distribution of proprietary digital content for VIMN The Americas’ brands, which include MTV, Nickelodeon, Comedy Central and VH1, across the region, as well as for Tr3S MTV, Musica y Mas in the U.S. Based in Miami, Florida, Rodriguez will report to Scot McBride, EVP and COO of VIMN The Americas.
Draw Something is my latest obsession; I’ve been addicted to it pretty much all weekend. Think of the app, which is available in both the Apple App Store and Android Market, as “Pictionary With Friends.” Choose a friend to play with and take turns drawing and guessing a word, receiving different number of points based on the difficulty of that word. The game allows you to partner up with friends on Facebook and/or Twitter, or have a random player automatically selected for you. Favorite feature so far: Bombs, when you’re stumped by a difficult word, you can choose to blow it up and get a new word. The app is available for free if you don’t mind ads, while the ad-free version can be had for $0.99.
