Cynopsis: Kids!

06/08/09

Good morning. It’s Monday, June 8, 2009, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

BBC Worldwide Channels Asia inks a new deal to launch CBeebies, BBC Knowledge and BBC on Singapore’s pay TV platform StarHub TV.  The 24-hour channels will officially launch on the service on August 1, 2009, and will reach some 527,000 subscribers.  The three new channels will join BBC World News and BBC Entertainment, which are already available on StarHub’s pay TV platform.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Puss in Boots, a new DreamWorks Animation feature film set for release in March 2012, will be an origin story, per CommingSoon.net.  In a discussion with Antonio Banderas, who has been the voice of Puss in Boots in the Shrek movies and also lend his voice to the animated feline in the feature film, explained the movie follows Puss from a young kitten to what we know him as today.  The actor adds that the story is very emotional at moments.  Banderas stars as Puss in Boots in the new Shrek movie, Shrek Forever After, which is slated for release May 21, 2010.

Spider-Man fans take note.  While rumors are continuing to swirl about whether Kirsten Dunst will return as Mary Jane for the Sam Raimi directed Spider-Man 4 movie (May 2011), the New York Post is quoting Sony producer Todd Black as saying that Dunst is definitely back.  When questioned about rumored nuptial plans for Peter Parker and Mary Jane, Black said the script did not include those plans.  Furthermore, Black is quoted as saying the villain for Spider-Man 4 will not be, as had been rumored, Morbius the vampire.  The villain will, however, be a known Spidey foe from the comics.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Viacom is shuttering Nickelodeon Magazine, its 16-year-old print monthly magazine with a circulation of 1+ million and reaching some 6.0 million readers per issue, according to the LA Times.  Also folding is Nick Jr. Magazine.  The Nickelodeon Magazine Group publishes both titles.  The loss of the magazines follows the national trend of closing print magazines and newspapers as readers turn to the internet for their fun, games and information.

Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato will serve as on-air hosts for the premiere weekend (Friday-Sunday, June 26-28) of their new Disney Channel Original Movie, Princess Protection Program (June 26 at 8p).  The new TV movie premiere will simulcast on Sprint TV and MobiTV, and will feature sneak peeks of a new music video, a new one-hour episode of Hannah Montana, a crossover episode of three series entitled Wizards on Deck with Hannah Montana, and a behind the scenes look at Wizards of Waverly Place The Movie, with a new episode of Wizards of Waverly Place bowing right after the movie that night.  The following night (June 27, 8p) during an encore of the Princess production Program, the network will offer a Princess Password program where viewers who count the number of times the word “princess” is said in the movie can enter that number online to unlock new episodes of Wizards of Waverly Place and Sonny With A Chance.  A preview of Disney’s upcoming animated movie The Princess and the Frog will be featured during the Sunday play of the movie (7p), with a new episode of Jonas following the movie.  Finally, The Princess Protection Program Royal B.F.F. Extended Edition will be available on Disney DVD, including an exclusive music video, a behind-the-scenes look at the movie, and a B.F.F. necklace set, from June 30.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Corus Entertainment’s Nelvana Enterprises and Ty’s Toy Box, a Brand Performance company, are teaming to open a branded online retail marketplace in Canada. Set to launch this fall, the retail website www.TysToyBox.ca , will be a complement to Ty’s Toy Box US-based site, but will focus exclusively on merchandise featuring characters from shows that air on Corus Kids’ Treehouse and YTV channels.  Under the deal, the site will offer merchandise based on Nelvana Studio productions, as well as from other content partners whose shows broadcast on Treehouse and YTV, such as Nickelodeon and Chorion.

Lionsgate and HIT Entertainment will release two new preschool-targeted DVDs this summer.

  • Bob The Builder: Built For Fun releases on DVD this July 14, and in addition to five episodes of the Bob the Builder will also include a game and read along feature as well as a free collectible toy vehicle.
  • Barney: Sharing is Caring will be available from August 11.  The DVD, which also features two games, will be promoted on www.barney.com and cross-promoted on 1.2 m Lionsgate Family titles debuting July-September 2009.
