This is getting ridiculous. Sony’s Culver City-based Sony Pictures Entertainment division has now confirmed that it too has been the victim of a hacker attack with over a million SonyPictures.com accounts violated and an additional 75,000 music codes and 3.5 million coupons uncovered. A group that refers to itself as “LulzSec” has claimed credit for the attack, (Sony says it working with the FBI to confirm this) – the group that also claimed responsibility for infiltrating PBS’ and Sony’s other sites. Gawker’s Media’s technology blog Gizmodo created a database to help sonypictures.com users find out whether their personal information was among the data stolen.
USA Network debuted an interactive, multiplatform digital narrative on Twitter to complement the return of its CIA drama Covert Affairs. Developed by the creators and writers behind the series, the “Tweetcast” will star Christopher Gorham (the Ugly Betty veteran who plays the blind character Auggie Anderson), who has been sent to follow up a mission in Budapest, Hungary. Users will be encouraged to retweet story points as the drama unfolds over six weeks in real-time on tweetcast.usanetwork.com and via the Covert Affairs series Facebook page.
Univision is streaming all matches of the biennial 2011 Copa Oro soccer tournament in the U.S. and Puerto Rico, the premiere FIFA event for North America, Central America and the Caribbean confederation. The matches, available on UnivisionDeportes.com, and will feature a Facebook plug-in with real-time commentary from fans. Live mobile streaming of Copa Oro matches will also be offered up exclusively for Sprint customers.
Fox Interactive Media’s gaming site IGN is gearing up for E3 this week, featuring a dedicated hub with news, interviews, game previews and HD-quality streaming of press conferences. (Live streaming coverage events and conferences can also be found on YouTube.) IGN has also come up with the Dominate app for iPhone this year to cover all the new game launches. It has a social bent, allowing users to create profiles and “check-in” to their favorite games.
YouTube introduced a new feature that allows video producers to apply for a Creative Commons license to allow their works to be sliced, diced and shared across the globe provided they give the author credit. CC-licensing, a concept founded by digital copyright expert Lawrence Lessig, is designed to cut through the red tape of traditional licensing while allowing creators to retain some rights such as the right to use works commercially. Producers such as C-SPAN, Public.Resource.Org and Voice of America have already agreed to open up their content for unlimited re-use. Simply mark any or all of your videos with the Creative Commons CC-BY license to let others share and remix your work; any video you create using CC content will automatically show the source videos’ titles underneath the video player.
Online music service Pandora has filed for an IPO seeking to raise as much as $140 million, according to an updated SEC filing. The company has yet to turn a profit (it reported a net loss of $113.9 million during Q1), but it has seen sales, users and usage increase dramatically. Revenue was up 131% y/y to $51 million during Q1, active users are up 88% to 34 million and listening hours are up 128% to 1.6 billion.
AARP and Boston-based PBS affiliate WGBH-TV is launching a new online reality series, 5 Weeks to a New Life, focusing on vital concerns for baby boomers, including revitalizing a marriage, looking good without resorting to Botox and pursuing financing dreams. The five-part weekly series will be hosted by Hugh Delehanty, SVP & Editor-In-Chief of AARP’s Media Properties.
Interactive display ad start-up Spongecell closed on a new round of financing led by Eric Schmidt, Google’s Executive Chairman, and Jim Pallotta, Chairman and Managing Director of Raptor Group. The company has developed rich-media-like interactive ads that include video, social media, mapping and couponing capabilities. Brian Rooney, Board Member of the Pittsburgh Steelers, and Silverhaze Partners, also participated.
The Justice Dept. is looking into bids from Apple, Google and others for bankrupt Canadian telecom equipment maker Nortel Networks, fearing that Nortel patents could stifle tech competition in the U.S. if held by one company, reports the WSJ. Nortel holds some 6,000 patents related to wireless video, Wi-Fi, search, social networking and LTE mobile data technology.
Google acquired social analytics start-up PostRank for an undisclosed amount. PostRank tracks real-time social networking data such as tweets, re-tweets and Facebook posts to measure web engagement generated around content, products and services.
In a move to cut down on “bulk app publishing,” Microsoft announced it is restricting the number of Windows Phone apps that it will approve from a single developer to 20 per day.
Android has once again increased its market share over other smartphone platforms during April, according to ComScore‘s most recent MobiLens report. Android increased its market share to 36.4%, up 5.2% percentage points, while Apple inched up by 1.2 points to capture a 26% share of the market. Microsoft continued to lose ground, falling to a 6.7% U.S. market share. The sale of smartphones continue to boom as 74.6 million Americans now own one, an increase of 13% from the three-month period ending in January 2011. Samsung ranked as the top overall phone manufacturer with 24.5% of U.S. mobile subscribers, followed by LG with a 20.9% share.

Social gamer Playdom has come up with a free mobile version of City of Wonder for the iPhone and iPod touch, enabling players to build a civilization, research technologies and engage in expeditions with allies across the platform. Playdom has released 13 versions of the game on social platforms across the globe to date, including networks in China, Russia, Germany and Brazil.

On the eve of the E3 gaming confab in LA, Electronic Arts has invested heavily in the digital gaming space with the launch of a new direct-to-consumer online gaming platform dubbed “Origin, powered by EA.” The site enables you to download and play more than 150 popular games directly to your PC (sorry Mac users) in 5 languages including top tier titles such as Battlefield 3, FIFA 12, Madden NFL 12, and Mass Effect 3. (It’s a web-based service but you’re purchasing downloads that reside on your hard drive that can be played when you’re not connected to the web.) Of course there’s a social component delivered via Origin’s desktop app which will be expanded over time, encouraging you to create a profile, post scores and chat with friends while your playing. A mobile component launches with games such as Scrabble and a soon-to-debut mobile version of Battlefield 3. It too will soon emphasize sharing features, offering the ability to see what your friends are playing and to compare high scores. EA has its work cut out here, competing with better-established online services such as Steam, which offers more than 1,100 titles from multiple developers, many with the option to play on a PC or a Mac.
