Cynopsis: Kids!


Good morning. It’s Monday, June 4, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing.

WGBH Boston has partnered with Canada’s Studio B Productions Inc. to develop and co-produce Martha Speaks, a new animated series based on the popular kid’s book of the same name by author Susan Meddaugh (1992/Houghton Mifflin).  Designed to expand kid’s vocabulary through language and story-telling (and eating alphabet soup), the Martha Speaks series will be comprised of 40 half hour episodes and is slated to be ready for air in fall 2008 on public TV in the US.  Studio B will hold international distribution rights for the property.  I totally recommend you read it if you don’t know it.


Granada International plans to launch a range of new shows at the Shanghai Television Festival next week, June 11-15, 2007.  Among the programs Granada International will be offering for distribution will be several kids and youth series including:

  • Supernormal (52×11′ or 26×22′) – a new animated HD series targeted to K8-12, Supernormal revolves around four friends who attend superhero Junior High, each with their own super powers  except for one regular boy. Produced by Granada Kids / World Leaders Entertainment in association with Granada International.
  • Pocoyo (52×7′) – the CGI and XSI animated preschool property features the popular Pocoyo in a new series.  Produced by Zinkia Entertainment/Granada International in association with Granada Kids.  Actor Stephen Fry narrates the English version of Pocoyo.


Sesame Street’s newest Muppet character Abby Cadabby, the 3-year-old Muppet fairy-in-training who joined the show in August 2006, is getting her own line of clothing for newborns, infants and toddlers.  The Abby Cadabby line will debut exclusively at JCPenny will debut the new Abby Cadabby apparel line in its Friendshop section this July and August as part of a special Sesame Street promotion.  Created by Children’s Apparel Network, the line will include clothing sets, dresses as well as kids playwear and sportswear including appliques on various fabrics.

Hooked on Phonics has launched Hooked on Phonics Discovery Reading, a new line of reading readiness programs designed for infants, toddlers and preschoolers, at the annual BookExpo America 2007 held in NYC over the weekend.  Each of the programs tackles different steps involved in reading readiness for young kids; discovery Reading, Baby Edition (vocabulary, memory, stimulation), Toddler Edition (listening skills, vocabulary and verbal skills/word object associations) and Pre-K Edition (learning letter names, sounds and phonemic awareness).

Disney named several folks to its publicity department.

  • Teri Meyer will be EVP/Worldwide Publicity, reporting to both Mark Zoradi, President/ Marketing and Distribution, and Jim Gallagher, President/Domestic Marketing. In this newly created position, Teri will manage campaigns for Disney Pictures, Touchstone Pictures, and Hollywood Pictures’ live-action and animated movies. She was recently SVP/International Publicity at Buena Vista International.
  • Jasmine Madatian was pulled in as SVP/Domestic Publicity while Michelle Sewell was upped to SVP/International Publicity. They will report to Teri with Jasmine also reporting into Jim Gallagher. Both will be responsible for all campaigns under their respective departments. Jasmine was previously SVP/Publicity and Promotions at Paramount. Michelle, a 15-year Buena Vista International veteran, served as VP/European Publicity.
