06/30/08

Good morning. It’s Monday, June 30, 2008, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Alan Rosenberg, President of the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) maintains SAG is willing to negotiate a new deal with Hollywood producers, even though the clock is ticking quickly on the current SAG contract, set to expire at midnight tonight. SAG leaders said they are happy to talk beyond the deadline marker to reach a satisfactory conclusion, although if a strike happens in July the return dates of many television shows would be put in jeopardy. The recent deal reached with AFTRA and the producers, which will be voted on by AFTRA members July 8, has SAG urging the 44,000 members who are also members of AFTRA to vote against the agreement, saying they can negotiate a better deal overall through SAG.

Tonight’s Premiere:
National Geographic: Locked Up Abroad at 9p
PBS: History Detectives at 9p

When live-plus-7 DVR viewing is taken into consideration, the median ages of CBS, ABC, NBC and FOX drops by one year, while The CW and Univision remain the same.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

Showtime is working with Rod Lurie on a new drama called Hilary Jones about a woman who works as a vice cop in Los Angeles during the week and is a legal prostitute in Nevada on weekends, according to THR. Previously Rod created female characters for the feature film The Contender and the ABC series Commander in Chief.

On another premium network HBO has a one-hour drama, Manic on the docket based on the book Manic, A Memoir by Terri Cheney, says Variety. The drama is about a lawyer who is thriving in her career but also suffers from bipolar disease and tries to hide it from her boss. Janet Tamaro will create and executive produce the pilot with Gavin Polone selected to also executive produce. Teri Cheney will be a consulting producer on the project.

Neal McDonough joins the cast of ABC’s Desperate Housewives as a regular next season playing a white-collar neighbor who may get romantic with Edie Britt (Nicolette Sheridan). Gale Harold was also recently added for next season playing Ken, the mystery man who kissed Susan Meyer (Teri Hatcher) during the final scene of the last season.

Casting Call: The Style Network is casting for its series Split Ends and needs top hairstylists, haircolorists and hair salons located in the Greater New York/New Jersey area to apply for the show’s fourth season. The show’s producers want people with personality plus to apply and hairstylists with a variety of experience (from newbie to someone with years of experience). It’s okay to nominate a hairstylist or salon, too. Send an email to

Describe the salon where you work (i.e. the atmosphere, type of clients, hair styling skills and why you or your hairdresser friend is the best). Be sure to attach a recent photo. The show is also casting in other cities around the U.S., and if interested send the same information to the same email address for consideration.

CYNOPSIS DIGITAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY
Sony announced a new strategy focused around video downloading and portability. Beginning this summer in the U.S. the PlayStation 3, like the Xbox before it, will offer movies and other video content as paid downloads. The company is working on enabling users to easily transfer video files purchased on the PS3 to PCs and portable devices. Sony also said its much-hyped Will Smith feature Hancock will be offered for purchase via broadband-connected Bravia TV sets before it is released on DVD. If a vertically integrated company like Sony really commits to moving its platforms around, the cable bypass issue (cutting your cable subscription and relying instead on digital downloads) could really heat up. Full edition: CYN DIGITAL.

CYNOPSIS KIDS – TODAY’S TOP STORY: Breakthrough Animation inks a US cable TV deal with Jetix US, the action block that airs on Toon Disney, for the animated series Jimmy Two Shoes (26×30).  A Breakthrough Animation Production, Jimmy Two Shoes is produced in association with Teletoon (Canada) and Jetix Europe, and will air from early next year in both regions.  Breakthrough Entertainment Inc distributes the series.  Full edition: CYN KIDS.

CYNOPSIS INTERNATIONAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY:  Archiver ITN Source inked an international deal with Qatar’s Al Jazeera for access to more than 800,000 video content hours.  For the next 5 years, the company will be able to use ITN Source-repped footage archives in its programming, including those belonging to British Pathe, Channel 4, Granada, ITN and Reuters. The deal spans Al Jazeera’s network of 5 channels, linked carriers and online platforms (including its YouTube channel). Full edition: CYN INTERNATIONAL.
