Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Monday, June 2, 2008, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Australia’s ABC Kids commissions the kid-targeted reality series Escape from Scorpion Island.  In the series 16 British and Australian kids 11-14 are stranded on an island and must compete on teams in various challenges to be the first figure out a way to escape the island.  Seasons two and three (60×30) of Escape from Scorpion Island will be shot back-to-back in Australia July 26-August 16.  Season two will bow on ABC TV later this year, with season three slated for 2009.  Escape from Scorpion Island is an RDF Media/Freehand production for BBC and ABC TV.  The first season of the series, filmed in Brazil, was produced by UK based RDF for the BBC.

The Jim Henson Company has named NCircle Entertainment as the home video distributor for its new animated preschool series Sid the Science Kid (40×30).  Currently in production, the science-readiness series will bow as part of the PBS Kids block on September 1, 2008.  NCircle will exclusively handle all home video and digital formats for Sid the Science Kid in the US and Canada.  The series is produced as part of a partnership between The Jim Henson Company and KCET, the LA PBS affiliate.

KOL, AOL’s online kids site, and Planet Cazmo, a tween/teen aimed virtual world, inks a one-year content deal.  Under the pact, KOL content will be feature across Planet Cazmo in virtual goods, with a new racing game featuring KOL characters and branding.  The game, and some future games, will be embedded widgets on KOL, where they can also be played.

Aardman Animations has teamed with the BBC Sport to create the animated open for the 2008 European Championship (as in football/soccer championship), which is better known as the Euro 2008.  The open features animated versions of famous players with backgrounds of the eight Austrian and Swiss cities where the games will be played.  The theme music will be a version of Mozart’s Symphony No. 41, adapted and performed by Unkle.  Of course Aardman is the studio that produces the Wallace & Gromit shorts and movies, as well as Creature Comforts, Chicken Run, and Shaun the Sheep among others.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

13-year-old counterculture gal Emily the Strange is making her way to the movie screen, with Dark Horse Entertainment’s prexy and founder Mike Richardson producing, according to THR.  So far there is no studio, director or genre set for Emily.  Created by Skateboarder Rob Reger as a promotional design for his company Cosmic Debris and use on stickers, t-shirts etc.  Emily the Strange went on to be featured in a series of comic books published by Dark Horse.  Richardson has also served as producer on Hellboy, and the upcoming 30 Days of Night.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Disney Channel teams with Screenvision to promote its new original TV movie Camp Rock, which premieres on the network on June 20.  A 30-second Camp Rock spot is currently running in Screenvision’s Premium Pod, which runs just ahead of movie previews at theaters, now through June 19 at all G and pg rated movies.  Screenvision’s cinema ad network is comprised of more than 14,000 screens across 2,300 theatres nationwide and reaches 92% of US DMAs.

Italy’s Atlantyca Entertainment newly established licensing division, led by Elisa Pezzutti, heads to the 2008 Licensing Show for the first time.  The group, which manages Atlantyca’s Geronimo Stilton property, recently inked a deal with Taffy Entertainment to serve as the exclusive Italian licensing agent for three of Taffy’s brands, Code Lyoko, Growing Up Creepie and Dive Olly Dive.

Build-A-Bear Workshop teams with Sanrio Inc. to introduce Tropical Hello Kitty by Sanrio.  The limited edition Tropical Hello Kitty is available at Build-A-Bear stores in the US and Canada.  Additionally, those who buy Tropical Hello Kitty can log onto www.buildabearville.com where they will receive 3,000 free Bear Bills, an extra room, themed wallpaper and a virtual Hello Kitty t-shirt for their pal.
