Cynopsis: Kids!
06/20/11

Good morning. It’s Monday, June 20, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Vme teams with the US Department of Health and Human Services (HSS) to support HSS’ newly launched Connecting Kids to Coverage Challenge, which aims to enroll five million uninsured kids who are eligible for Medicaid or the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) over five years.  Vme launches a new Public Service Announcement (PSA) featuring Minerva Borjas, host of its parenting series Tubebe. The PSA is designed to provide Latino parents with information to find resources and apply for free and low-cost public health insurance for their kids.  Vme is available in close to 40 markets free over-the-air, and on basic digital cable.  The network is all carried nationally via satellite in the basic and Hispanic packages of Dish Network and DirecTV.  In some areas, Vme is available on Verizon FiOS and AT&T U-verse.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Fox 2000 has signed Thor Freudenthal (Diary of a Wimpy Kid) to direct Percy Jackson and the Olympians: Sea of Monsters; the second movie based on author Rick Riordan’s hugely popular book series, per 24 Frames.  Additionally, the studio has picked up actor Logan Lerman‘s option to return as Percy Jackson in the new movie.  The writing duo of Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski (Ed Wood, Agent Cody Banks) are penning the script for Percy Jackson and the Olympians: Sea of Monsters.  The first movie, Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief was directed by Chris Columbus.  Columbus will produce Sea of Monsters.

Universal Pictures unveils plans to release Illumination Entertainment‘s Despicable Me 2 on July 3, 2013, per Coming Soon.  The movie is a sequel to Illumination’s CG animated 3D movie Despicable Me, which opened July 9, 2010.

Mattel‘s Hot Wheels may indeed be heading to the big screen.  Warner Bros.- based production banner Legendary Entertainment is in talks with Mattel for the movie rights to Hot Wheels, per Variety, which also reports the movie would not be aimed at kids but more in the vein of Fast Five.  The movie would remain at Warner Bros., which had been in talks with Joel Silver and his Silver Pictures for a Hot Wheels movie.  Prior to that Columbia had been working on a Hot Wheels movie with director McG.

Comcast’s NBCUniversal enters into a equity and multi-year promotional partnership to for with Guardian Media Entertainment (GME), founded by SLG Entertainment and headed by comic book icon Stan Lee, home of the new cross media superhero The Guardian Project that Lee created with the National Hockey League (NHL).  NBCU will provide cross-platform media support for The Guardian project and ongoing content.  GME plans to introduce a Guardian Project publishing program that will include comic books and a novel as well as developing a line of branded merchandise.  GME is also in early discussions for development of a TV series and long-term plans include the creation of films, games, theme park attraction and global extensions.  Announced last fall, the tween boy-targeted The Guardian Project ( www.guardianproject30.com) will focus on storytelling and include a team of 30 Guardian superheroes, one to represent each NHL team and featuring a superpower that corresponds with that team as well.  One of the goals of the project is to introduce young fans to hockey. The 30 Guardians will be unveiled together in a special presentation during the 2011 NHL All-Star Game on January 30 in Raleigh, NC.  NBCU recently entered into a 10-year pact with the NHL that runs through the 2020-2021 season.  Under that deal NBCU channels will air more regular season and Stanley Cup Playoff games, and also includes rights to online-video streaming of games.

Disney Junior in Canada will premiere Imagination Movers in Concert on Canada Day, Friday, July 1 at 6:30p.   Leading up to the special the Disney Junior channel (available in English and French in Canada) will feature four back-to-back Imagination Movers episodes from 4:30p.  The special was filmed at live concert at the Lakefront Arena in New Orleans and features guest appearances by Joey Fatone (*NSYNC) and Duff Goldman (Ace of Cakes).  The concert and four series episodes will be available on Disney Junior OnDemand for a week from July 1.

Anchor Bay Entertainment secures a nationwide cross-promotion partnership for Nick Jr.’s animated Wow! Wow! Wubbzy! DVD with the South Carolina Peach Council.  The promotional deal, running now through August 2011, will afford consumers the chance to receive a $3 rebate via mail when they buy 2 lbs of Certified SC Grown peaches and a Wow! Wow! Wubbzy! DVD.  The promotion will be featured on 1,250+ retail stores, such as Food Lion, Bi-Lo, Piggly Wiggly and IGA.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum ( www.rockhall.com ) in Cleveland, Ohio, names NY-based The Wildflower Group as its North American licensing agent.  The agency will develop a comprehensive licensing and merchandising program that will focus on the names Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Rock Hall and feature products across multiple categories including apparel and accessories, musical instruments, music accessories (e.g. earbuds, phone covers and cases), toys and games, stationery and paper products, and gift and home decor.

Zodiak Rights inks an ice cream and frozen dessert promotion for the animated Mr Bean brand with Omore, Engro Foods’ kids’ brand in Pakistan.  Kids Media, Zodiak Rights’ agent in the territory, brokered the deal with IAL Saatchi & Saatchi on behalf of Engro Foods in Pakistan.  Under the deal Omore will produce Mr Bean character branded ice cream packs across three brands in its Frooze range of ice-lollies, Jelicks, Dasher and Lick a Flavor.  The products will include in-pack premiums and sweepstakes for a family trip.  The promotion will be supported with TV spots that will run until the end of the month, as well as other marketing efforts including a Mr Bean branded bus.  Elsewhere, a Dutch-based European biscuit manufacturer has acquired the rights to produce Mr bean animated character printed biscuits.

Kids II ( www.kidsii.com ), an infant/toddler products company, grows its portfolio and product offering with the acquisition of two companies, Rhino Toys and Taggies.  Rhino Toys, best known for its O-Ball, are designed to offer tactile and unique-performance play.  Originally created as plush security blankets with satin ribbon loops, Taggies has become a lifestyle brand featuring blankets, plush toys, apparel, and accessories.

Answer to Yesterday’s Trivia: Who am I?  I’m only about 10″ tall, and well, stuffed.  I live in a Beech Tree just south of my best friend’s house.  But then my house received another squatter, and I had to move in with my best friend. My favorite food is Haycorns, I love my green (or pink) stripped shirt, and when I get nervous, my ears twitch.  Who am I?  PIGLET  Kudos to: Karin Sorem-Fisher Price/NY; Meredith Wayne-CoxReps/NY; Kim Mullaney-WNET/NY; Melissa Picarello-Active Int’l/NY; Heather Floore-KDAF/Dallas; Genevieve DeMars-Creating4Kids/LA; Michael Ross-The Hub/Burbank; Sabrina Sparlin-CESD/LA

Today’s Trivia Question:  This is a portion of the opening narrative of what series:  “…Everyday he has to make all kinds of decisions like what to wear, whom to date and when to panic. Now these decisions should be easy but if you take a look inside [his] head, you’ll see why he sometimes has trouble making up his mind.”  (Email [email protected] with your answer and be sure to include your name, company, city and time zone. Unofficial rules: Only the second four correct answers from each time zone will be mentioned; and once you’ve been mentioned in any of the Cynopsis editions, you can’t be mentioned again that calendar week.)
