Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Monday, June 16, 2008, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

9 Story Entertainment and Darius Films, both Canadian based companies, are teaming to produce a new pilot entitled Fugget About It, a primetime animated comedy commissioned for The Detour, Teletoon’s teen and adult-targeted programming block.  Fugget About It follows the misadventures of a NY mob boss and his family as they enter a witness protection program and wind up living in sleepy Canadian town.  The series is co-created and written by Willem Wennekers (Weirdsville).  9 Story’s Vince Commisso will serve as executive producer along with co-creator and executive producer Nicholas Tabarrok of Darius Films.  9 Story will handle international distribution for the series.

Japanese publisher Kodansha enters into a deal with Korean production house Daewon Media to produce a animated new TV series based on Gon, a non-verbal early 1990s manga series by Masashi Tanaka for air in 2010, per Anime News Network.  Gon revolves around a small and cute orange dinosaur.  Several years back Sprite Animation Studios, which announced it was at work on a movie version of Gon, but not word on what happened to that endeavor.

Seems that Anna Faris and Andy Samberg (Saturday Night Live) have apparently joined the voice cast for the animated feature film adaptation of the kid book Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, by wife/husband author/illustrator team Judi and Ron Barrett, according to Faris who told as much to the MTV Movies blogSony optioned Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs some time ago, and when I last wrote about it the movie was slated for release March 2009.

Walt Disney Pictures picks up a pitch (untitled) by Mike Rich (he penned The Rookie, Secretariat and The Nativity Story), that is based on a true story and will elements of The Parent Trap and Sleepless in Seattle, per Variety.

35th ANNUAL CREATIVE ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT EMMY AWARDS

The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) handed out the 35th Annual Creative Arts & Entertainment Emmy Awards, which of course includes awards for excellence in children’s/family programming content, on Friday evening at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Frederick P. Rose Hall.  Over the course of the evening, which was streamed live on TVWorldwide.com (and can still be viewed at www.tvworldwide.com/events/emmys/080613/ ), PBS earned 10 awards, Discovery Kids won 3, and Kids WB, Nickelodeon and Nick Jr. each took home 2 Emmy’s, with Disney Channel, Discovery and one syndicated series taking home one statue apiece.  Additionally, Kabillion, which is little more than a year old, won its very Emmy.  Now, I can’t list all the winners here so please don’t go crazy on me!  All of the categories and winners (that includes specific individuals as well as shows so check it out) can be found at www.emmyonline.org , and again you can check out the ceremony at TVWorldwide.com.  A heartfelt congrats to all nominees and winners. Get Fit With Alyson, a new series of 3-minute webisodes staring actress Alyson Stoner (she’s in the upcoming Camp Rock) created by Tribe Pictures, launches today.  Sponsored by Nintendo, Get Fit With Alyson, which by the way is unscripted, is designed to get exercising and more interested in choosing a healthy lifestyle and features the actress leading teens through an exercise routine.   Webisodes are produced in association with Production Advisor.  Additional original content is being produced exclusively for the Nintendo Channel (available only via the Wii internet connection at www.nintendo.com/wii/channels/nintendochannel ).

SouthPeak Interactive Corporation will co-publish Igor The Game for the Wii, Nintendo DS and PC.  Co-published and developed by Legacy Interactive in the US, the game is based on the upcoming animated feature film Igor from Exodus Film Group in cooperation with The Weinstein Company.  Interactive Game Group (I2G) is financing and coordinating the game project on a worldwide basis.  MGM Studios is distributing the movie in the US, which releases here September 19, 2008.

City Interactive has released Beauty Factory, a new girl-targeted strategy PC game, in the UK.  The game asks players to become the CEO of a beauty company and creating their own line of products including naming the company, researching and developing product ingredients and eventually packaging and design, as well as creating a full marketing campaign including positioning and promotion plans.  The game features a tutorial to help girls through the process.
