NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
Paramount and Nickelodeon Movies have inked a deal with writers Leo Benvenuti and Steve Rudnick for their movie pitch Mayfly, per Variety. Mayfly revolves around the idea that bugs have short lives and is underlined by the lead mayfly character that learns to live each moment to its fullest with the help of its friend a tortoise, which of course conversely has a very long life expectation.
Imagi Animation Studios, in association with Japan’s Tatsunoko Production, will produce a new CG animated feature film based on the anime franchise Gatchaman. Planned for theatrical release, the movie will be written/directed by Kevin Munroe, who is currently writing and directing Imagi’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles CG-animated movie that is being distributed by Warner Bros. in the U.S. and The Weinstein Company internationally. The announcement was made today by Francis Kao, CEO and Vice Chairman of Imagi International.
Lionsgate and picked up the North American distribution rights to the CGI animated feature Happily N’Ever After, according to the Hollywood Reporter. A new comedy version of the story of Cinderella, the movie was written by Robert Moreland, directed by Paul J. Bolger and produced by John H. Williams with BAF Berlin Animation Film and BFC Berliner Film Companie. Happily N’Ever After features the voices of Sarah Michelle Geller, Sigourney Weaver, Freddie Prinze Jr., George Carlin, Wallace Shawn and Andy Dick. The movie is slated for release in the first part of 2007.
MORE KIDS STUFF
When Superman Returns debuts in Imax theaters worldwide on Wednesday, June 28, moviegoers will see a section of the Warner Bros. movie in 3D. About 20 minutes of the movie is being converted from 2D live-action to 3D, marking a first for live action movies. Superman Returns opens wide simultaneously in traditional and Imax theaters on June 28.
Dish Network, EchoStar’s satellite TV service, is expanding its interactive service with the debut of DishGames to its DishHome interactive channel 100. DishGames will feature 16 games from PixelPlay’s branded games including Asteroids Mega, Centipede Mega as well as adding features such as prizing, score submission, leader board and tournament capabilities. Consumers can subscribe to DishGames for $4.99 per month or $49.99 a year. The games will be available for non-subscribers in demo mode.
MARKETING/LICENSING
Central Park Media, a distributor of anime in the US, has teamed with New York eatery Sushi Twist for a series of screenings to be held at the Manhattan location. Sushi Twist held its first screening yesterday showing Animation Runner Kuromi, and will screen Animation Runner Kuromi 2 on Sunday, June 18 and Munto on Sunday, June 25, each beginning at 1:30p. There is an admission charge.
Trymedia Games, a division of Macrovision Corporation, and Double Fusion, an in-game advertising/marketing company, have teamed up to debut a new in-game advertising service that will be supported through the Trymedia Network. The new service will provide advertisers with an opportunity to sponsor the trial period of a game that consumers sample prior to deciding to purchase and downloading a game, or not. Under the deal, Double Fusion will be an exclusive sales agent for the in-game ads through the Trymedia Network.
The Game Factory will release Noddy and The Magic Book for PlayStation 2 this September 2006. In the game, which comes on the heels of its release for Game Boy Advance, two goblins, Sly and Gobbo, have made off with Big Ears’ magic book and are using it for no good on the residents of Toyland. Targeted to K3-6, the players must help Noddy on his mission to catch the two and stop them before they make more trouble. The game is designed to underline a range of preschool age developmental skills including problem solving, social skills and hand-eye coordination.
THQ Inc. has release Teen Titans for PlayStation 2 and GameCube. Based on the Warner Bros. Animation TV series of the same name, the Teen Titans game was developed by A2M and features DC Comics characters.

Additionally, newly appointed IGDA Officers for 2006-2007 include Brian Reynolds, President of indie studio Big Huge Games, has been appointed as Chairperson, while Mitzi McGilvray was re-elected as Secretary and Dr. Capps was named Treasurer. The IGDA is a non-profit group that aims to build the international gaming development community and bring about change to benefit the efforts of the industry.
