Cynopsis: Kids!

7/09/07

Good morning. It’s Monday, July 9, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing.

Will they or won’t they?  They being Sony and I’m taking about a much speculated/rumored PlayStation 3 price drop.  And the answer is, yep! Sony has put an end to the guessing and has dropped the price of the 60 GB PlayStation 3 by $100 all the way down to $499, while also launching a brand new 80GB PlayStation 3 model that will now carry the $599 price-tag.

Production I.G. will acquire manga publisher Mag Garden by years end, in a 2-to-1 stock exchange.  Production I.G. currently owns 15% in the six-year Mag Garden, the latter of which is valued at some $4.4 million.  Production I.G. and its subsidiary Xebec, will use Mag Garden’s properties as a source for future anime projects.  The newly merged division will be called I.G. Port.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

The story of Anne Shirley and her life on Prince Edward Island is set to continue with a new movie, Anne of Green Gables: A New Beginning.  The producers are looking for the new Anne Shirley through an online casting call being run on YouTube.   Based on the Anne of Green Gables books by Canadian author Lucy Maud Montgomery, the first book of which celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2008, the new movie takes place prior to Anne arriving at Avonlea.  The movie will be penned and produced by Kevin Sullivan, who produced TV series and made three movies based on the property.  Prior to this Anne has been the focus of several TV series, both live action and animated, two feature films, one of which was a silent film, as well as a musical.

MORE KIDS STUFF

RDF Media’s The Foundation and Entertainment Rights have ordered a series of The Basil Brush Show shorts from animation house Blue-Zoo Productions.  Under the deal, Blue-Zoo will produced 65 new animated Basil Brush shorts, which will be shown both on CBBC as well as online via www.basilbrush.com .  The Basil Brush Show (65 x 30′) is broadcast in the UK on CBBC.

MARKETING/LICENSING

In other BBC news, a big pat on the back to CBBC that has re-launched six of its web-based games with Switch technology, which makes the games accessible to kids with motor and cognitive disabilities.  CBeebies already uses Switch to allow its preschool age viewers the ability to maneuver the games.  Switch is a device that can be plugged into a computer and used instead of a mouse or keyboard to navigate a game.  The six games are: Scuba Scramble, Walkie Talkie, Target Zone, Splat Attack, Line Of Defence and Tuneulator.

Corus Entertainment’s YTV.com and Kids Internet Safety Alliance have teamed to launch an online safety initiative called Surf Smart.  The Surf Smart effort uses games to provide kids with information about making their way around the internet safely.  Surf Smart, which is built into YTV’s online community-based game Sitekick, provides kids the chance to collect limited edition KINSA-branded Chips, while they learn how to stay safe online.  Kids can use their collected chips to customize their online characters, called Sitekicks.  To get the Surf Smart Chips, kids have to read an internet safety tip and as players acquire more Chips, they increase their ranking in the online community.
