Cynopsis: Kids!

7/07/08

Good morning. It’s Monday, July 7, 2008, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

CITV (UK) has commissioned Bookaboo! (13×10), a new multiplatform mixed live-action/animated preschool series about a drumming ‘rock puppy’, who just can’t seem to perform his drum solo unless he’s a story has been read to him.  Bookaboo! Will be produced by Happy Films and will feature celebrity guests who will help out by reading stories to the puppy so he can go on.  ITV’s commission supports the UK’s National Year of Reading 2008 effort to promote kid and adult literacy.  The series will be supported by an online Bookaboo Book Club, as well as live events and in-store promotions.

MORE KIDS STUFF

EM.Entertainment and Munich-based Your Family Entertainment (f/k/a RTV Family Entertainment), will jointly agreed to end their four-year old distribution pact as of September 30, 2008.  Moving forward the kid-targeted programming included under the previous deal will be distributed on a non-exclusive basis by both EM.Entertainment and Your Family Entertainment until the agreement expires on September 30.

The new reality series High School Musical: Get in the Picture premieres on ABC, Sunday, July 20 at 8-9p, with the top performers moving on to the semifinals that airs the following night.  Hosted by Nick Lachey, along with a panel of talent scouts, the series will feature folks competing for a chance to star in a music video that will air at the end of Disney’s High School Musical 3: Senior Year that will be released October 24, 2008.  Additionally, the winner will win a talent hold agreement with ABC and recording contract for two singles with Walt Disney Records, one of which will be a version of the song from the music video.  The series will air Sundays and Mondays, 8-9p, for three weeks, then continues Mondays at 8p through mid-September

Canada’s YTV is set to premiere the reality series The Next Star (12 episodes) on Friday, July 18 at 6p.  Hosted by Adamo Ruggiero (Degrassi: The Next Generation), the series features 12 kids, all under 15-years-old, going head-to-head to earn a recording contract with Universal Music Canada.  The Next Star series is produced by Toronto-based Tricon Films & Television in association with YTV.  In addition to panel of judges, including Suzie McNeil (INXS), Christopher Ward (songwriter) and Steve Cranwell (music marketing exec), folks at home will be called on to vote for their favorite performers via www.ytv.com and text message to help determine the winner.

Indie producer Kindle Entertainment will debut its new preschool puppet series, Big and Small (52×11), on CBeebies this fall 2008.  A co-production between Kindle Entertainment and 3J’s productions, Big and Small is produced in association with Treehouse (Canada).  With the goal of encouraging preschoolers to see things in different ways, the series follows the adventures of Big and Small, two best friends who are opposites, and features the puppets/puppetry from The Grogs workshop.  In the UK the series features the voices of noted personalities, actor/comedian, Lenny Henry and actress, Imelda Staunton.  While in Canada the series will feature the voice talent of The Grogs.

MARKETING/LICENSING

LucasArts and Sony Online Entertainment will celebrate the fifth anniversary of massively multiplayer games Star Wars Galaxies with the debut of the Star Wars Galaxies Trading Card Game.  The first release for the online trading card game, Champions of the Force, will be available to Star Wars Galaxies subscribers with valid, active, fully paid accounts later this summer.  Subscribers will be able to purchase booster packs and starter decks through Sony Online Entertainment’s Station Store at www.store.station.sony.com .  Additionally, LucasArts and Sony Online Entertainment are celebrating Star Wars Galaxies with several in-game events. The ESRB game rating is pending.

Fifi, the star of the preschool animated series Fifi and the Flowertots, will serve as an official ambassador for Australia’s Planet Ark’s National Tree Day (July 25) and School’s Tree Day (July 27), an Australian national tree-planting initiative.  Both Nick Jr and ABC Kids will run Fifi episodes this month, with Nick Jr also running a FIFI marathon featuring new episodes on National Tree Day.
