TNT takes you inside the shadowy world of the CIA

The three week television event of the summer!

Begins This Sunday at 8/7c only on TNT

Cynopsis: DIGITAL

Good Morning, it’s Monday, July 30, 2007 and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

Better late than never. Testifying in the high-profile Viacom-Google lawsuit on Friday, a Google lawyer told a federal judge that video fingerprinting technology should “hopefully” be available on YouTube by September, allowing the company to quickly identify and remove copyright-violating clips. It is the first time the company has set even a tentative date for the long-awaited filtering system.

A&E signed a deal with Southwest Airlines to offer free downloads of its “real life” reality shows for customers to watch on their laptops during their flight. Southwest is installing kiosks in several airports around the country where ticketed customers can download the shows. Episodes of Gene Simmons’ Family Jewels and Criss Angel Mindfreak are currently available.
The BBC launched its iPlayer for users who applied to be beta testers, laying the groundwork for full release in November. The player allows users to download full versions of most BBC shows up to 7 days after they originally air. Downloads can be saved on the user’s hard drive for up to 30 days before automatically expiring. The BBC is also in discussions to distribute clips on other sites, directing viewers to the iPlayer for full episodes. The current version can only be used on computers running Windows XP though, excluding Mac and Vista user from the trial.
MySpace and Dark Horse Comics launched a free online anthology series featuring the work of some of the best-known names in the fantasy/sci fi genre. The inaugural August issue of “MySpace Dark Horse Presents” includes Sugar Shock, from artist Fabio Moon and Buffy the Vampire Slayer showrunner Josh Whedon, as well as The Umbrella Academy, from artist Gabriel Ba and Gerard Way, lead singer of My Chemical Romance. The original Dark Horse Presents series launched several comic franchises including Frank Miller’s Sin City and Paul Chadwick’s Concrete.
Kid-targeted music site Kidz Bop reported a huge increase in traffic following an upgrade that allowed kids to upload their own music videos to the site. Video streams, which totaled just 238,000 before the July 3 relaunch, increased ten-fold to 2.8 million. Kidz Bop also kicked off “Be a Kidz Bop Star,” a national talent search culminating in a live world tour this October.

Video sharing site DailyMotion signed a deal with RDF USA to license 8 original programs/concepts during the next 12 months, with an eye toward developing web series into multiplatform properties. The Paris-based video service and the U.S. office of the British production company will share in revenues earned from online distribution of the shows, as well as any linear television projects that result from the partnership.
Broadband service Cycling.TV signed distribution agreements with video services Joost and Blinkx, providing original content such as live coverage of the Tour de France. The announcement is a boon for non-Microsoft users, as most of the content from the website required ActiveX controls. Blinkx is currently working on its own P2P Broadband TV client called BBTV, scheduled to launch this fall.
video start up Babelgum launched a dedicated channel to highlight content from the Rushes Soho Shorts Festival running through August 3 in London. The festival showcases short films from both established filmmakers and newcomers, judging entries based on six categories. Babelgum will also provide access to a wide selection of films produced for past festivals.
The National Black Programming Consortium opened the application process for this year’s New Media Institute, a 6-week virtual workshop and one-week onsite residency digital training program for emerging and seasoned filmmakers. Projects will focus on creating content about the history of the Delta region and the impact of Blues in America. Applications will be accepted until August 22.

Microsoft told analysts last week the company will focus more on web-based services and consumer devices in the future, according to reports, presumably taking pages from the playbooks of Google and Apple. Nearly every Microsoft software application will add web-based services within the next 3-10 years, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer told analysts.
rebounded to report a doubling of first-quarter profit thanks to strong digital camera and flat panel TV sales and big box office receipts from Spider Man 3. Cost cutting and favorable Japanese yen exchange rates also contributed to profits, totaling 66.5 billion Yen or $554 million for the quarter. Yet PlayStation 3 sales continued to weigh on results, as the games division registered loss of 29.2 billion yen. Sony sold 710,000 during the quarter, compared to 3.43 million Nintendo Wii’s sold during the same period.
BIA Digital
Partners made a mezzanine investment in Atlanta-based Creative Loafing, a network of alternative weekly newspapers and websites targeting young web-savvy audiences. The investment will enable the firm to acquire the Chicago Reader and the Washington Reader, the top alternative papers in Chicago and Washington, D.C.
The Senate Commerce Committee is scheduled to markup a bill on August 2 purported to create the next generation of digital parental-control technology, reports Broadcasting and Cable. The bill would require the FCC to find content-blocking technologies that work across multiple platforms, a sort of V-chip for the internet, cell phones, set tops and PDAs.

Carat USA and Carat Fusion will join together to form the next-generation Carat, under the leadership of Sarah Fay, CEO, and Scott Sorokin, President. “We are creating the first fully integrated, consumer-centric, on/offline marketing communications agency of this size, scope and scale,” said Carat America CEO David Verklin in a statement, characterizing the merger as a reaction to the changing media landscape. Mr. Verklin is nothing if not forward looking. He makes several interesting predictions about the future of advertising in his new book “What This, Listen Up, Click Here,” co-written by Bernice Kanner and published this summer by Wiley. He predicts that digital budgets will soon soar to comprise 15-20% of total outlays, that marketers will get more adept at adjusting creative messaging on the fly and that new video platforms may become low-cost pilot systems where TV shows can be tested.

Video sharing site DailyMotion made three executive appointments: former SVP of Global Marketing at Time Warner Joy Marcus was tapped as Managing Director; former development executive at MTV Danny Passman was named Senior Creative Director; and John Schultz was hired from fuse as Creative Director.

Social networking site Bebo unveiled KateModern, its first serialized drama from the creators of LonelyGirl 15. KateModern combines the viral video and social networking mediums, encouraging users to grab and post videos of real life events that will ultimately influence the plotline of the show. The jumping off point is an “art project” – a series of spooky images reminiscent of the Blair Witch Project that have something to do with strange dreams Kate has been having. The British “Kate” (not her real name) and her friends have posted a series of messages to kick the whole thing off.
