Good Morning, it’s Monday, July 2, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing.

Joel Siegel, movie critic for ABC’s Good Morning America, died Friday after succumbing to colon cancer. He was 63. Siegel, who often added a dash of humor to his weekly reviews, was respected for his movie knowledge and focused judgment of films and actors and recognized by his ever-present thick mustache and glasses. Siegel got his start in the television industry in 1972 at WCBS-TV then later moved to WABC. Siegel then joined the team at Good Morning America in 1981. Throughout his career, he won five New York Emmy Awards, a public service award from the Anti-Defamation League of B’nai B’rith and was singled out by the New York State Associated Press Broadcasters Association for general excellence in individual reporting. Siegel is survived by his wife, Ena Swansea and son Dylan.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

If you haven’t been able to follow all the cast changes of ABC‘s Boston Legal, here’s a quick rundown.  Not returning in the fall – Julie Bowen and Constance Zimmer.  Returning for multiple episodes – Gail O’Grady, Mark Valley, Saffron Burrows and Rene Auberjonois.  New to the cast this fall – John Larroquette, Tara Summers and Taraji Henson.  And finally, upped from a recurring to a regular character – Christian Clemenson.  Now, go forth and watch TV.

Audra McDonald has signed to co-star in the new Grey’s Anatomy spinoff for ABC, Private Practice, opposite Kate Walsh.  McDonald will replace Merrin Dungey, and will play one of Addison Forbes Montgomery’s friends from medical school, along with Taye Diggs as the other friend.

Scott Patterson will join the cast of CW’s Aliens in the role originated by Patrick Breen in the pilot.  The story is about two teenagers living in Wisconsin – one born and bred, the other a Pakistani Muslim exchange student who comes to stay with the family.  Patterson plays the husband/father.
