TECH NEWS

September 16 is the deadline for comments and October 9 for reply comments on TiVo’s petition to the FCC to continue using set-top boxes, like TiVo, that employ CableCARD security technology. This comes after the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit essentially gutted the rules as part of a decision that the FCC lacked authority to apply encoding rules to all pay-TV providers, including satellite operators. While the decision was not aimed at CableCARDs, it raised questions about cable obligations to support consumer access to the cards. As a result, TiVo wants the FCC to clarity that those obligations still apply, since CableCARDs also allow access to TiVo recording devices.

No sooner did Prince William and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, dub their newborn Prince George Alexander Louis, than nearly 200 people began registering web domain names associated with the royal baby, according to Names.co.uk. Despite the fact that they contained no content, registered names include GeorgeAlexanderLouis.com, princegeorgecambridge co.uk, hrhprincegeorge co.uk, hisroyalhighnessprincegeorgeofcambridge co.uk, princegeorgeofcambridge.com and kinggeorge.com. Anyone want to buy a domain name?

Google underestimated the demand of its Chromecast dongle. The company has halted a promotion that offered three months of free Netflix with the purchase of the $35 HDMI streaming stick. “Please note that the Netflix promotional offer (which was available in limited supply) has now ended. Orders placed before 1PM PST on 7/25 will receive their promotion code once their order ships,” Google said in a note on the Chromecast order page. Meanwhile, Google told the Los Angeles Times that it cut the deal short because of “overwhelming demand.”

NEW PROGRAMMING + DEALS

ZenithOptimedia and Collective have reached a multi-year agreement that provides ZenithOptimedia (ZO) with preferred access to Collective’s data-driven, multi-screen analytics platform. These solutions enable ZO Clients to identify TV preferences of online audiences who are currently in-market for a product category, are actively shopping for a particular brand, and have taken a specific online action. Built on Collective’s TV Accelerator platform, the new solution, called TVA Analytics, integrates data about TV viewing from digital set-top-box data with data from clients’ websites. TVA Analytics enables advertisers to understand which TV shows are being watched by customers who are on their website and showing in-market behaviors for their category and for their brand.

MOBILE GAMING + APPS

Google is creating a prototype device that could transform phones into universal translators. Android vice president Hugo Barra told The Times that the company already has hardware prototypes capable of doing instant translation, noting that the technology worked “close to 100% of the time, cutting out background noise which is normally an issue with speech recognition.” Google has reportedly been testing the tool in “controlled environments” and admits that it is still several years away. In the interim, Google Chrome is currently able to translate words and phrases on a web page. The Google Translate app also offers mobile translation for users via their smartphone or tablet.

Sony will hold a Gamescom press conference on Tuesday, August 20, at the Saatenhaus am Rheinpark in Cologne, Germany. The company has previously used the event to announce price cuts for the PS3 and new line-ups for PS Vita. This time the event is anticipated to spotlight more details on the release of PlayStation 4.

Speaking of PlayStation 4, PS4 and Xbox one controllers are now available by pre-order. Both the Microsoft Store and Amazon are selling the Xbox One pad in advance. Meanwhile, Amazon is taking orders for the PS4’s DualShock 4 peripheral.

Participant Media‘s new millennial television network, Pivot, announced that its downloadable app Pivot TV will be offered to DIRECTV customers beginning August 1 and is the first affiliate partner to do so. Pivot will be available in the DIRECTV XTRA package and above on channel 267. DIRECTV customers can also access Pivot TV’s on demand content through DIRECTV Everywhere. In addition, NeuLion, Inc., has been selected to design and deliver Pivot’s downloadable interactive app, which will allow its content to be delivered to multiple digital devices, through NeuLion’s TV Everywhere Platform.

MARKETING + MEASUREMENT

Popcornflix, the ad-supported, full-length feature streaming movie service that provides users free access to more than 750 full-length feature films and independent titles, has surpassed two million users on Roku. “The Home Theater experience is growing exponentially,” said Gary Delfiner, President of Digital Distribution at Screen Media Ventures, LLC, and creator of Popcornflix. “Viewers and manufacturers are investing heavily in this space. Families are more likely to watch a movie through a set top box or smart TV than go out to a theater. Digital movie platforms are in the cutting edge of that disruption.”

EXEC MOVES

Glenn Britt, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer at Time Warner Cable Inc., has announced he will retire at the end of the year. He will, however, remain on the Board of Directors in a non-executive role. Robert Marcus, the company’s President and Chief Operating Officer, will take over as CEO on January 1, 2014.

Patriots’ quarterback Tom Brady spent some time in the off-season spotlight. He’s one of two main characters in Tom Brady’s Best Friend, a Funny or Die sketch branded by Under Armour. The video is a follow-up to one he did last year, Tom Brady’s Wicked Accent, with Community‘s David Neher playing a Dick’s Sporting Goods employee who accuses the quarterback of having a fake Boston accent. That video garnered more than 1.8 million views. In the sequel, Neher plays a guy who asks Brady to pretend to be his friend and irritates him every step of the way.
