Cynopsis: Kids!
07/25/11
Good morning. It’s Monday, July 25, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.
Dolphin Digital Media ( www.dolphindigitalmedia.com) unveils plans to begin production on its new teen-targeted digital drama series, Hiding, on August 8, 2011 in Alberta, Canada. Hiding will be directed by Thomas Wright (NCIS, Castle, One Tree Hill, and Smallville), with Dolphin Digital Media’s CEO Bill O’Dowd serving as Executive Producer. Penned by Brian Hurwitz, Hiding will premiere as a mini web series (6×10-15 minute episodes), which will then be repackaged and made available as full made for TV movie. Hiding follows 15-year-old Alicia Torres as she is entered into the Witness Protection Program. After witnessing her parents’ murder at the hands of the son of a notorious crime boss, Alicia is moved from New York City to Livingston, Montana, where she takes on a new identity as “Josephine Russo,” an Italian-American girl from Seattle. In the program Josephine can have no contact with anyone from her former life yep that means no cell phone, no Facebook, no e-mail she has to start life from scratch and she has to remember not to speak any Spanish.
Activate interlock! Dynotherms connected! Infracells up! Mega thrusters are go! Voltron is set to swoop onto the big screen in a live-action version of the animated series Voltron: Defender of the Universe as Relativity Media, through its deal with Atlas Entertainment, acquires the feature film rights to Voltron from World Events Productions. The original US series Voltron: Defender of the Universe, which is based on the Japanese anime properties Beast King GoLion and Kikou Kantai Dairugger XV, debuted in the US 1984. Last month Nicktoon’s launched the new animated series Voltron Force. Atlas Entertainment will oversee the project, which will be produced by its Charles Roven (The Dark Knight) and Richard Suckle (The International), along with Kickstart Entertainment’s Jason Netter (Wanted). World Events Productions’ Ted Koplar (Voltron Force) will executive produce. The script is being written by Thomas Dean Donnelly (Conan the Barbarian) and Joshua Oppenheimer (Sahara).
Nicktoons gives the go ahead on the new original skateboarding-centric animated comedy series Wild Grinders (26×30), which is based on the life of pro-skateboarder Rob Dyrdek (MTV’s Rob & Big, Fantasy Factory). Produced in partnership with Home Plate Entertainment, Moonscoop and Dyrdek’s Wild Grinders, the series revolves around the adventures of an eclectic group of skateboarding friends and is set to launch on Nicktoons in 2012. To support the new series debut, Nicktoons will air a series of Wild Grinders shorts and other original multiplatform digital content (behind the scenes videos, character descriptions, etc.) beginning this September 2011 on Nicktoons.com/wildgrinders ( www.nicktoons.com/wildgrinders ). Agogo Corporation, Telegael Teoranta and Copernicus Studios are also co-producers on the HD production.
Sony Pictures Animation and Dark Horse Entertainment team-up to develop an animated feature film based on the Dark Horse graphic young adult aimed novel series Chickenhare by Chris Grine. The story revolves around the adventures of Chickenhare, who is half chicken, half hare and all hero, and his box turtle pal Abe as they battle creatures and critters, making friends along the way too, in their fantasy world. Chickenhare does focus on ideas and themes of identity, family, and friendship. The first two Chickenhare graphic novels, Chickenhare Volume 1: The House OF Klaus and Chickenhare, Vol. 2: Fire in the Hole were published by Dark Horse in 2006 and 2008 respectively. Mike Richardson and Keith Goldberg will executive produce the movie for Dark Horse Entertainment. Michael Lachance will oversee the project for Sony Pictures Animation with president of production Michelle Raimo-Kouyate.
Turner’s Cartoon Network sings a deal with producer Don Murphy (Transformers movies) and his partner Susan Montford (Real Steel) and their company Angry Filmworks to develop Captain Planet as a live-action feature film. The movie is to be based on Turner’s animated environmental-centric super hero series, Captain Planet and the Planeteers, which was based on a concept by Ted Turner, and debuted in 1990 and ran domestically and internationally in syndication and cable networks TBS and TNT. Six full seasons of the series were produced in the original run of the series, featuring voiceovers by a range of guest celebrities, including Whoopi Goldberg, Meg Ryan, Martin Sheen, Edward Asner, James Coburn, Dean Stockwell and Sting. This is Cartoon Network’s second big screen adaptation in as many months. Last month the network entered into a similar pact for its Ben 10 property with producer Joel Silver.
Skywriter Media and Entertainment Group and Gene Roddenberry’s Roddenberry Entertainment ( www.roddenberry.com ) partner to develop Gene’s Journal, a K6-11 targeted animated comedy series based on the web comic created by Trevor Roth and illustrated by cartoonist David Reddick. Gene’s Journal chronicles the tween/teen years of science fiction writer/creator icon Gene Roddenberry. Alex Galatis (Atomic Betty, Jimmy Two Shoes) will serve as head writer on the new series.
TeenNick launches its new The ’90s Are All That two-hour weeknight programming block tonight at 12a. OK, while not targeted to current kids/tweens, but many former kids/tweens, the block, which was announced at the network’s upfront this spring, will feature a rotating lineup of some of the popular Nickelodeon series for the 1990s, including shows such as All That, Kenan and Kel, Clarissa Explains It All and the animated series Doug. The ’90s Are All That will also feature integrated, fan-centric and driven social media components on Facebook ( www.facebook.com/90sareallthat ) and 90sAreAllThat.com ( www.90sareallthat.com ), where fans can chat, watch full episodes, view exclusive clips, photos, and take part in polls and enter sweepstakes (to win products form the ’90s). The block will replay weeknights from 2-4a. Later this year, fans will be able to vote for shows from Nickelodeon’s ’90s archives that they want added to the new block’s on-air programming line-up.
Teletoon Canada picks up a second season of the live-action series My Babysitter’s a Vampire. Produced by Fresh TV, the new season of the series heads back into production on 13 new episodes, in English and French, this September 2011. Based on the original My Babysitter’s a Vampire TV movie (premiered in 2010 in Canada and 2011 US), the My Babysitter’s a Vampire series was developed by Fresh TV and FremantleMedia Enterprises, in association with Teletoon Canada. Season one of the kid-targeted series is slated to premiere on Teletoon in 2012. The My Babysitter’s A Vampire TV movie and the series are also currently airing in the US on Disney Channel.
DreamWorks Animation taps Kevin Lima (Enchanted, Tarzan) to direct its upcoming Bollywood-style animated musical feature film Monkeys of Mumbai (working title, f/k/a Monkeys of Bollywood). Additionally, Lisa Stewart (Turbo, Monsters vs. Aliens) and Chris Chase (Enchanted, Tarzan) have come on board to serve as producers on the project. Earlier this year DreamWorks Animation announced that Stephen Schwartz (Wicked, Prince of Egypt, Enchanted, and numerous others) would serve as executive producer and lyricist, A.R. Rahman (127 Hours, Slumdog Millionaire, Bombay Dreams, and many others) as executive producer and composer, with Gurinder Chadha and Paul Berges (Bride & Prejudice, Bend It Like Beckham) penning the movie. Set in Mumbai, the animated musical adventure is inspired by the epic Indian story of The Ramayana, but will be retold from the point of view of two common monkeys, who become unlikely heroes who prevent an ancient demon from taking over the world.
Nickelodeon acquires the worldwide broadcast rights to the boy 6-11 targeted action/adventure animated series Monsuno (52×30) under a new global distribution deal with Jakks Pacific, Dentsu Entertainment USA and FremantleMedia Enterprises. Monsuno will initially launch in the US on Nicktoons in 2012 and select English speaking countries. Nickelodeon will launch the Monsuno series on its channels in the Latin America, the UK, key European and Eastern European territories, Australia and New Zealand, India, Southeast Asia, Russia and Africa. Targeting boys 6 11, the Monsuno series will be supported by a Jakks Pacific toy line featuring action figures, accessories, playsets, collectables, electronics and integrated role-play products. The Monsuno series is a co-production between Pacific Animation Partners, a joint venture of Jakks Pacific and Dentsu Entertainment USA, with FremantleMedia Enterprises and The Topps Company. FME is responsible for the exclusive worldwide distribution of Monsuno TV programming (excluding Asia) and will act as the Master Licensing agent for the Monsuno brand outside of Asia. Jakks Pacific is creator of the original Monsuno property and master toymaker of the toy line based on the property, which is set to debut at retail in the US simultaneous to the series debut here in spring 2012. The Topps Company has signed on to produce Monsuno trading card games, confectioneries and related products.
The third season of Ludorum‘s preschool series Chuggington, which is set to launch on CBeebies (UK) in 2012, will feature three new train characters, Piper (the youngest engine trainee), Skylar (a crane fresh from the teacher-training academy) and Decka (a brightly colored double-decker tram with a big personality). Three Chuggington specials are currently in development and will be released on DVD beginning in 2013. Additionally, Ludorum and master toy partner, Tomy International have teamed for a two-day kid/family UK event at King’s Cross St. Pancras Tube station in London on Saturday-Sunday, July 30-31. Among the activities at the event, kids/families will be invited to demo new Chuggington toys from Tomy, Mega and VTech, as well as log onto Chuggington.com ( www.chuggington.com ) for games and activities and watch episodes of the series.
Universal Studios Home Entertainment will debut the movie ZhuZhu Pets: Quest for Zhu on DVD and digital download on September 27, 2011, as part of its multi-picture deal with Cepia, creator of the ZhuZhu Pets property. Cepia has teamed up with production company Moonscoop (Jakers!, Clifford, The Big Red Dog, Chloe’s Closet), writer Sean Catherine Derek (Smurfs, Spiderman, Mortal Combat) and 3D animation studio Prana Animation Studios (TRON: Legacy, Tinker Bell) to create the new Zhu-niverse in ZhuZhu Pets: Quest for Zhu movie.
Nickelodeon enters into an art toy deal with Toynami and Oregon-based vinyl toy designer UNKL for a new line of co-branded SpongeBob SquarePants vinyl toys based on UNKL’s popular UniPo figures. The first products under the new deal, announced at Sand Diego Comic-Con International, will feature figures of SpongeBob SquarePants, Patrick, Squidward, Mr. Krabs and The Flying Dutchman, which will be available from fall 2011 at specialty retailers.
The LEGO Group enters into several new strategic construction toy deals, including one with Marvel Entertainment and another with Warner Bros. Consumer Products (WBCP) for DC Universe.
- Under a new multi-year pact with Marvel Entertainment, LEGO has been granted the rights to develop a unique Marvel branded construction toy collection, LEGO Super Heroes, which will feature Marvel characters, vehicles and stories. The new LEGO Super Heroes Marvel collection’s initial construction sets, minifigures and buildable characters, focusing at first on Marvel’s The Avengers movie, and X-Men and Spider-Man classic characters, are set to launch in May 2012. The retail debut of the Marvel-based LEGO Super Heroes collection will coincide with the Summer 2012 movie release of Marvel Studios and Disney‘s feature film Marvel’s The Avengers. The first buildable characters in the LEGO Super Heroes collection include Captain America, The Hulk and Iron Man. Select figures were unveiled over the weekend at Comic-Con International.
- WBCP with DC Entertainment (DCE) and LEGO extend their existing relationship to provide LEGO with the license to create LEGO DC Universe Super Heroes. Under the multi-year licensing deal, LEGO will have access to the full library of DC Comics characters and stories to create construction toys, including construction sets, minifigures and buildable characters and creatures. The new line is slated to bow in January 2012. The new LEGO DC Universe Super Heroes collection will feature 13 super heroes in LEGO minifigure form, including: Batman; Robin; Catwoman; The Joker; The Riddler; Two-Face; Poison Ivy; Harley Quinn; Bane; Bruce Wayne; Superman; Lex Luthor; and Wonder Woman. Buildable characters will include Batman, The Joker and Green Lantern. Select figures were on display at Comic-Con International at the San Diego Convention Center over the weekend.
