Good morning. It’s Monday, July 24, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.
Some news and info from the San Diego Comic-Con, which wrapped over the weekend:
The Henson folks, including Lisa Henson, told the assembled crowd that a Fraggle Rock movie was in development. She also said that a second season of Fraggle Rock was forthcoming on DVD, as well as a packaged release including The Dark Crystal, Labyrinth and Mirrormask, as well as showing off merchandising for Dark Crystal and Labyrinth. The Tokyopop Return to Labyrinth manga that will be released next week will also feature a look at the Legends of Dark Crystal manga which is slated for publication in spring 2007. Also showcased was the new line of kids apparel called Jim Henson Designs.
Folks got a look at footage from several upcoming movies including Disney’s third Pirates of the Caribbean movie, which is slated for release in May 25, 2007. The footage included interviews with Pirates producer Jerry Bruckheimer and actor Orlando Bloom. Also showing pre-launch tidbits – director Sam Raimi and producer Laura Ziskin screened new footage from the Sony movie Spider-Man 3, which will open May 4, 2007. Also in attendance was the Spider-Man 3 cast.
Marvel Studios’ Iron Man will feature the villain Mandarin, sort of the Ringo of the Marvel villain set. Distributed by Paramount, Iron Man is currently set for May 2, 2008.
With no completed deal in place, Superman Returns director Bryan Singer told those gathered at a panel that he hopes to direct more Superman movies for Warner Bros.
NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
Freddie Highmore (Neverland, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory) and Sarah Bolger have been cast to star as the Grace kids in the movie adaptation of The Spiderwick Chronicles, per Hollywood Reporter. Highmore will play both of the twin boys: Jared Grace, who has a hot temper and is also a quick thinker; and Simon Grace, an animal lover. Bolger will play the twins’ sister Mallory. Based on Holly Black and Tony DiTerlizzi’s book series of the same name, the Paramount and Nickelodeon Movies film will begin shooting this September in Canada.

Codename: Kids Next Door: Operation Z.E.R.O. (Zero Explanation Reveals Origins), a new original 90 minute TV movie based on the Cartoon Network‘s series Codename: Kids Next Door, is set to premiere August 11, 7:30p. About two weeks out from the movie debut, Cartoon Network will launch is a Top Ten Villain Countdown, beginning Monday, July 31 at 4p during Miguzi, during which each weekday afternoon the network will air an episode of Kids Next Door featuring a different villain. Additionally, Cartoon Network games group will feature a single-player arcade action game, Outnumbuh’d, a role-playing game beginning August 7 (www.operationzero.net). Upon finishing the game players will get a sneak peek video clip of the special.

Target Entertainment has inked two new licensing agreements for CCI Entertainment’s pre-school property Harry and His Bucket Full of Dinosaurs with Falcon Games (jigsaw puzzles, card and cardboard games) and David Halsall International Ltd. (covers bikes, trikes, scooters, protection gear, inflatables, wooden puzzles and games). Falcon Games and David Halsall products are slated for release in spring/summer 2007. A second season commissioned by the UK’s Five is slated to begin airing in early 2007. Additionally 2 Entertain will release the first Harry DVD next month, and Puffin, publisher of the original classic Harry books by Ian Whybrow and Adrian Reynolds, has will release a series of TV tie-in books set for release in 2007.

EXECUTIVE MOVES
Disney ABC Television Group and Disney Channel Worldwide have appointed several new executives in the Asia Pacific region.
- Inez Ho has been appointed Director/Communications, Disney Television International Asia Pacific. Based in Hong Kong, Ho will head-up communication efforts across the region for Disney Channels and Disney-branded TV businesses in 15 markets including India, China, Singapore, Taiwan, Australia and New Zealand. She will also oversee communications for the join initiatives between the Asia-Pacific TV group and other Disney divisions. Ho will report to Patti McTeague, SVP/Kids’ Communications, Disney-ABC Television Group, and will work closely with Nicky Parkinson, SVP & Managing Director/Branded Television, Asia Pacific. Ho joins Disney from Turner Broadcasting System where she was the head of Public Relations for CNN and oversaw Turner’s corporate communications efforts in the region. Previously, she was in the public relations department for China’s official news agency.
- Michiyo Hayashi has been named Senior Manager/Development, Jetix programming block, Disney Channel Worldwide. Based in Tokyo, Hayashi will oversee development of locally produced programming content for Jetix platforms and programming blocks worldwide. She will work closely with Japanese animation studios, production companies and terrestrial broadcasters to identify new content for use both at the local level and globally through co-productions and/or co-financing arrangements. Hayashi was most recently Senior Manager/Content Acquisition/Franchise Management based in Japan.
- Irene Hamberger has been appointed Senior Manager/Content Acquisition, Disney Channel Japan and Toon Disney Japan. An industry veteran she will be key in the company’s continued acquisition of content from around the world for the Japan market. Hamberger will also be based in Tokyo.
