Viacom and DirecTV reached a new long-term carriage renewal deal it was announced on Friday – bringing about the immediate return of Viacom’s 26 networks, including Nickelodeon, Nick Jr., Nicktoons and TeenNick, to DirecTV’s lineup. The resolution came after all of Viacom’s channels were removed from DirecTV’s offering for nine days. The financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed. In addition to the return of the Viacom channels, DirecTV subscribers will also be able to watch the Viacom programming content on tablets, laptops, handhelds and other devices via its DirecTV Everywhere platform. As part of the new overall agreement, DirecTV has an option to add the EPIX service to its entertainment offerings.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

CBBC (UK) orders three new series from its in-house production group CBBC Productions, Dick and Dom’s Absolute Genius, DareDevils and Earthshock. All three shows were developed by CBBC Productions’ in-house development team, which is helmed by Creative Director Bill Hobbins. Additionally, CBBC orders a third season of Sadie J as well as a second season of the fact-based comedy Vic Reeves’ Ministry Of Curious Stuff (13×30).

  • Dick and Dom’s Absolute Genius (10×13)  the series will be hosted by CBBC’s popular on-air talent Dick and Dom as they investigate the world of scientists and inventions throughout history. The series is produced by Newsround editor Owenna Griffiths.
  • DareDevils (13×30)  a new family game shows in which kids’ families and friends are set challenges by the “DareDevil”. The DareDevil will research his contestant’s family and friends to uncover their likes, dislikes, phobias and fears and will then craft a dare for each individual. The question is whether contestants’ families will go that extra mile and face their fears to help them win a unique prize. The series is executive produced by Simon Marsh.
  • Earthshock – CBBC Productions has also received a two season commission for the new factual series Earthshock, which aims to underline the power of planet Earth. Shot on location, Earthshock will explore various acts of nature, like hurricanes, earthquakes and tsunamis and lighting strikes, to show kid viewers what it would be like to experience these events. Earthshock will feature a team of hosts traveling the world for stories. The series is executive produced by Gurdip Bhangoo.

At the Television Critics Association (TCA) summer tour that began over the weekend, PBS President and CEO Paul Kerger revealed that PBS is currently developing a new kid-targeted math series featuring a female lead, per THR. No doubt further news on this project will come soon.

LICENSING

Mega Brands launches its first free mobile app Mega Bloks First Builders Let’s Build! Designed to support the development of fine motor skills for kids one and older, the app also encourages parents and preschoolers to build and play together with the Mega Bloks First Builders construction system. Furthermore, the app features animated block-by-block instructions for 20+ models, and also includes a range of visuals and sound effects. The Mega Bloks First Builders Let’s Build! app is available in five English, French, Spanish, Italian and German, and is free to download for the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad.

Hyatt Regency Mission Bay Spay & Marina offers up a new underwater world experience for families in San Diego with the first SeaWorld Suites. Each of the four SeaWorld Suites features two adjoining rooms with a connecting door: an underwater-themed room for kids and a sea-inspired room for adults, including a private balcony. For kids’ ocean-themed room  there is a bunk bed, Shamu stuffed animals, bean bag chairs, a 32-inch flat screen TV, and aquatic-themed artwork. Rates begin at $359/night.

MORE KIDS STUFF

In other PBS news from TCA PBS Kids will premiere the new animated preschool series Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood, inspired by the iconic series Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, on Labor Day, Monday, September 3 with two back-to-back episodes (check local listings). Produced by The Fred Rogers Company, Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood underscores Fred Rogers’ tenet that social and emotional competencies are keys to doing well in both school and life. These skills are encouraged in the episodes of the new series, each of which are comprised of two stories focusing on a common early learning theme. The series revolves around 4-year-old Daniel Tiger, son of the original series Daniel Striped Tiger, as he welcomes young viewers into his Neighborhood of Make Believe. Adults will recognize many of the characters featured in the series as the offspring of the original series characters. A multiplatform property, Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood will also have its own interactive website (www.pbskids.org/daniel) that will launch on Monday, August 6, featuring online games that invite preschoolers to take a ride through the Neighborhood on Trolley, and give Daniel and his friends a ride while exploring his daily routines and pretend play activities with Daniel. The site will also offer resources for parents, caregivers and teachers to support the lessons in each episode. Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood is executive produced by Angela C. Santomero, of Out of the Blue Enterprises (Super Why, Blues Clues) and who also provided the new series with creative vision, and Kevin Morrison of The Fred Rogers Company. The series is animated by 9 Story Entertainment (Almost Naked Animals, Wild Kratts, among many others). Game designer Schell Games is developing series related online games.

Nickelodeon debuts a new special episode of Big Time Rush tonight, July 23, 2012 at 7:30p. The in-concert special, Big Time Rush: Party All Night, features the group performing songs from the Nashville, Tennessee stop on their 18-city concert tour.

Scooby-Doo, Fred, Daphne, Velma and Shaggy team for a new season of the animated series Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated that debuts on Cartoon Network on Monday, July 30, at 2p. Viewers can watch three full weeks of new episodes with Scooby and the gang Monday through Friday at 2p. Produced by Warner Bros. Animation, the new season of Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated begins as the group reunites after going their separate ways at the end of season one. The series is executive produced by Sam Register (Teen Titans, Ben 10) and features the voices of Frank Welker (Futurama), Mindy Cohn (The Facts of Life), Grey DeLisle (Batman: The Brave and the Bold) and Matthew Lillard (The Descendents). Spike Brandt & Tony Cervone (The Looney Tunes Show) serve as supervising producers.

Walt Disney Company Southeast Asia and Astro, a pay-TV operator, are set to launch the Disney XD channel in Malaysia on September 15, 2012, in both standard definition and HD, per Malaysian national news agency Bernama. At launch the channel will be available in English, Bahasa Malaysia, Mandarin and Tamil. Disney XD will be the first international kid-targeted channel to be available on Astro’s basic platform.

Rastamouse, star of the CBeebies (UK) TV series, and his pals have launched a new radio shows, For Real FM, on CBeebies Radio (www.bbc.co.uk/cbeebies/radio). The For Real FM show, which debuted July 20, will air every Friday for 10 weeks and will feature songs to sing-along to, character interviews, Mouseland news and a phone-in segment where kids ask questions and take part in a memory game. Other regular features include “Rap ah da Day” where listeners get to hear Ice Pop’s thought of the day delivered in his inimitable style and Sonny puts his own spin on the weather in Mouseland, Grove Town’s favorite weather mouse will be out an about rappin’ his weather forecast. For Real FM on CBeebies Radio allows kids to interactive with the Rastamouse characters in a unique way. The content will be available for up to seven days during which time it can be download as a podcast. The radio show leads up to the debut of the new season of Rastamouse, which premieres on CBeebies this August 2012.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

In London, Penguin Children’s appoints Eric Huang to the newly created position of New Business and IP Acquisitions Director. Huang, who had been Penguin Children’s Director/Media & Entertainment Group, will be seeking new properties for acquisition and IP investment, develop new partnerships and help create IP. He will report to Francesca Dow, Managing Director of Penguin Children’s. Dow explains Huang’s new role as one in which he will, “accelerate our transition from a publisher to a content-provider on multiple platforms including digital, media, entertainment and merchandising.” Huang is credited for acquiring the publishing rights for Penguin to brands including Moshi Monsters, Peppa Pig and Club Penguin. Additionally, Huang recently established a partnership for Penguin with digital developers Made in Me to create new digital formats and projects, and acquired the publishing license for the game Skylanders.

Zodiak Media reorganizes its HQ and in doing so promotes CFO, Laurent Boissel to the expanded position of Chief Financial and Operating Officer (CFOO) Zodiak Media. Boissel will continue to report to Zodiak CEO David Frank, in close relationship with the Paris and London teams. Boissel’s appointment follows the departure of current Group COO Jonny Slow to take up his new position as CEO of Zodiak Americas based in LA. Additionally, as part of the restructuring, Roisin Thomas is named Chief of Staff, and will report to Frank, while Jana Bakunina is named VP/Corporate Finance and will report to Boissel. Both are currently VP/Corporate Development. Based in Paris, with key offices around the world, Zodiak Media is an independent producer of programming including a range of kid content. Zodiak Media is majority owed by Italy-based De Agostini.
