Good Morning. It’s Monday, July 17, 2006, and this is your first early morning briefing.
Hey! All you Arrested Development fans! It’s back – at least it looks that way. Mark Cuban’s HDNet is in the process of picking up all three seasons, distributed by 20th Television, according to Television Week. This show will join a couple of other cancelled series including the CBS drama Joan of Arcadia and the Showtime series Dead Like Me. This news follows Cuban’s announcement last week that Dan Rather would be joining the network with Dan Rather Reports. HDNet is currently available in only 3 million homes.
Tonight’s Premiere:
A&E: Driving Force at 9p
FX has picked up the cable syndication rights to off-net series Two and a Half Men, distributed by Warner Bros. Domestic Cable Distribution, as of 2010. According to Hollywood Reporter, the show is going for $750,000 per episode, with potential for up double runs M-F, as well as two weekend plays. The show goes to local broadcast syndication in Fall 2007, and one of the major groups to sign on thus far is Tribune who also picked up the rights to “airing” the show online 5x week.
Slight program change to your fall schedule – Fox’s Tuesday night schedule as of September 5 will begin with House, followed by Standoff. The original scheduled had Standoff at 8p followed by House. Once the shows go on a baseball induced hiatus, it will return with the original lineup – Standoff then House.
Adult Swim will introduce several new animated original series in late summer and fall. New series include:
- Metalocalypse, premieres August 6 – Follows the misdeeds and exploits of the world’s most popular heavy metal band Dethklok. The show is created by Brendon Small and Tommy Blacha and will air on Sundays at 1145p.
- Bleach, premieres September 9 – A 15-year old boy sees ghosts and becomes a Soul Reaper. The show will air Saturdays at 1130p.
- Trinity Blood, premieres September 9 – 500 years after Armageddon, peace seems to reign in the world, yet darkness still lurks and vampires return to destroy humans. The show is scheduled to air Saturdays at 12a.
- Frisky Dingo, premieres October 15 – Killface, the reluctant villain who wants to destroy earth, is pitted against an equally ambivalent superhero Awesome-X. Co-created by Matt Thompson and Adam Reed, the show will air Sundays at 1230p.
Adult Swim’s returning series this fall include: Squidbillies, Robot Chicken, 12oz. Mouse, Aqua Teen Hunger Force and Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law.
Court TV announces five new programs in development:
- Bounty Girls – Southern California’s elite team of female bounty hunters who use beauty and brains to catch the toughest criminals.
- Call 911 – 30-minute show that relives real calls for emergency services from start to resolution.
- Divorce Story – Each episode follows two couples as they go through arbitration.
- Phenomena Police – Active duty peace officers pursue calls involving paranormal activity or bizarre phenomena.
- Real Hustlers (wt) – Former con men and women offer tips on how to avoid getting swindled.
If you are visiting Silver Spring, MD starting next week through August 6, you won’t be able to miss the 446-foot long inflatable great white shark perched atop The Discovery Communications Building. Or, if you visit the Big Apple July 27 to July 30, you might run into someone carrying a surfboard and wearing Bite University apparel. What’s happening? It’s Shark Week of course, cable’s longest running programming stunt that premieres on The Discovery Channel July 30. This year’s week long shark fest is hosted by Mike Rowe and starts with a two-hour special Dirty Jobs: Jobs That Bite.
Correction: The new MTV2 series Crank Yankers (wrongly listed here on Friday as Crack Yankers), was at one time a Comedy Central series, not an MTV series.

TNT is currently talking wtih Holly Hunter to headline its new series Saving Grace, from Fox TV Studios. Hunter’s character is a police officer who has perhaps seen too much to feel compassion any longer, until she is presented with an angel who offers her a chance to redeem her life. Production is expected to begin soon.
Also at TNT, Michael Keaton has signed on for the limited series The Company from Sony Pictures TV. The story is set at a secret government agency, The Company, during the Cold War and previously signed to are Chris O’Donnell and Alfred Molina.
NBC/Dick Wolf series Law & Order: Criminal Intent has added Nona Gaye to the cast as an Assistant District Attorney. Courtney Vance had played ADA Ron Carver since the shows inception.
In ABC’s fall Ted Danson comedy series Help Me Help You, Lindsay Sloane had joined the cast as Danson’s daughter. Danson plays a group therapist who could use a little therapy himself.
Fox’s hit series 24 has added Regina King to the cast, as the sister Wayne Palmer, the former Chief of Staff to the late President Palmer. King’s character is an advocacy lawyer.
Per Variety, Lifetime has ordered six episodes of a reality show starring psychic Lisa Williams, in a series aptly titled The Lisa William Project. The show is set to air in the fall at 10p, paired with the off-net series Medium. Lifetime will co-produce with Merv Griffin on this project.
JJ Abrams is jumping ship from Touchstone and moving over to Warner Bros. Abrams’ production company Bad Robot’s deal with Touchstone came to an end, and rather than renewing he accepted the lucrative 6-year deal offered by Warner Bros.
Kevin Sullivan, former SVP/Corporate Communications for NBC Universal, has been tapped by President Bush’s White House as Communications Director. For those not fluent in all the White House offices, Sullivan will be what Toby Ziegler was on the show The West Wing. Kevin’s new gig begins on July 24, and he’ll oversee strategic communications and long-range planning, and managing contacts with regional press.
The Weather Channel Interactive has named Tom Flournoy as VP/Advanced Media. Tom and his team are charged with producing and coordinating all video content for the interactive platform. The New York-based production company, Original Media, has hired Ethan Goldman as VP/Current Series and Development. Ethan will develop both scripted and reality projects for television as well as content for alternative media platforms.
WWE has appointed Kristi D’Aliso to Promotions Manager, responsible for the development of promotional campaigns to introduce and promote the company’s products to the cable industry. In addition, WWE has promoted Heather Lubin to Affiliate Marketing Manager, where she will manage all marketing efforts for WWE’s monthly pay-per views for cable, satellite and delivery partners among other duties.
Elizabeth Crisafi joins Discovery Networks as VP/Integrated Promotions and Partnerships, Affiliate Sales and Marketing. In her new role, Elizabeth will create and manage all national promotions and integrated marketing partnerships across all affiliate platforms.
