CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Cynopsis: Kids!

07/17/06

Good morning. It’s Monday, July 17, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest was tops again at the box office this weekend by earning an estimated $62.2 million, and making it the third biggest grossing second weekend, taking its place right behind Shrek 2 and Spider-Man.  With its total box office of $258.2 million, Pirates surpassed its production budget ($225 million) and owns the largest 10-day box office opening record, pushing aside Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith that had reigned with $236.9 million.  The Buena Vista movie zipped passed $200 million on its eighth day in release, quicker that any movie before it.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Comcast Cable has picked up the rights to Across the Pond Studios’ animated series Atomik Mike, which Comcast will include as part of its new KidsQuest Adventures debuting this fall.  Targeted to kids/tweens 8-14, KidsQuest Adventures is a live-action, interactive, educational series featuring Atomik Mike and his pal April as hosts. The series will air five days a week, including Saturday morning.  Created by Stephan Nilson and Israel Cruz, Atomik Mike will lead the audience on an adventure from TV to the web.  Additionally, the series will include flash animated segments, based on the Atomik Mike comics.

NBC has added Delta Burke, Chris Elliott and Michael McKean to the cast of its new live-action version of The Year Without a Santa Claus.  Burke will star as Mrs. Claus, opposite the previously announced John Goodman as Santa, with Elliott and McKean playing Heatmiser and Snowmiser, the two quarreling sons of Mother Nature, who will be played by Carol Kane.  The movie also stars Chris Kattan, Ethan Suplee and Eddie Griffin.  Based on the Rankin-Bass 1974 stop-motion animated special of the same name, production has begun in Louisiana on the new 2-hr adaptation, which is set to air this holiday 2006.  Produced by the Wolper Company in association with Warner Bros. Television, Mark Wolper will Executive Produce with Ron Underwood serving as Director.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Cartoon Network took its turn at the TCA Summer Tour on Friday, laying out and updating its summertime programming plans including the debut of new original series, TV movies and special programming, for Cartoon Network and Adult Swim and online platforms.  Cartoon Network will air several new episodes from its Mon-Thurs 7pm series for the remainder of the summer, and the primetime block on those evenings will be hosted by Mac and Bloo, characters from Foster’s Home or Imaginary Friends.  Friday nights will continue to showcase musical performances, taped in front of a live studio audience, the performances air at 9p.

  • Beginning tonight, Cartoon Network New Media expands Toonami Jetstream, a joint effort between the network and VIZ Media, which will offer on-demand, full streaming episodes of anime and action series including: Naruto, Samurai Jack and Megas XLR as well as Hikaru no Go, MÄR and The Prince of Tennis (the latter shows do not currently air on TV in the US).  New episodes will be added weekly to the site, with the previous episodes available for a short time via the archive.
  • August 11 – A new original movie Codename: Kids Next Door: Operation Z.E.R.O. premieres at 7:30p (90 min).  A new season of the series bows September 8.
  • November marks the debut of the new animated series Class of 3000 about a group of kids who are also talented musicians.  The series is created and executive produced by André Benjamin (André 3000 of OutKast) and Tom Lynch.
  • November 17 – The one-hour original movie My Gym Partner’s a Monkey: The Big Field Trip premieres at 7:30p, from Cartoon Network Studios.
  • November 24 – Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends: Good Wilt Hunting, the first of four 1-hr TV movies, premieres at 7p, from Cartoon Network Studios.

Adult Swim marks its 5th anniversary, and the network says there may be a big celebration on-air, but then again … maybe not.

  • Airing weekly at 11:45pm as of August 6, Metalocalypse the new animated series follows the exploits of Dethlock, a fictional Norwegian metal band, which is the most popular band on the planet.  While Dethklok is talented, its members are also, well, stupid and selfish, leaving a trail of destruction in their wake.  The band’s fans aren’t the brightest either, agreeing to sign “pain waivers” in order to attend their concerts.  In the tradition of This is Spinal Tap, Metalocalypse is created by Brandon Small and Tommy Blacha.
  • October 15, Frisky Dingo  premieres at 12:30a.  The  new series comes from the creators of Sealab 2021 about the supervillain Killface and his nemesis, Awesome-X.  This is your average good vs. evil, except both Killface and X are embroiled in the minutia of daily corporate life, including the watching out for the costs of their missions, toy-sales and of course their health plan.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Blue Man Group and ToyQuest have created and released a line of musical instruments inspired by the Blue Man Group.  The new line is currently available exclusively at FAO Schwarz through mid August, and will then be available at other retailers.

Hitting magazine stands tomorrow is the premiere issue of Sprouse Bros. CODE, the new tween boy-targeted magazine from Dylan and Cole Sprouse, the twin brothers who star in Disney Channel’s The Suite Life of Zack and Cody.  Topics covered in the first issue include: interviews with skateboarder Tony Hawk and Nick Hogan (Hulk’s son); who to watch in the upcoming X-Games XII; styling tips to impress girls; preview of New Line Cinema’s movie How To Eat Fried Worms; gaming and gadget information and websites.  Created in tandem by Dualstar Entertainment Group and Leisure Publishing, the magazine is being distributed by Curtis Circulation Company.  The initial print run of the issue is upwards of 300,000 copies ($4.99/per issue – $3.99/special first issue rate).
