Cynopsis: Kids!
7/14/08
Good morning. It’s Friday, July 14, 2008, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.
On the heels of this weekend’s release of Warner/New Line/Walden remake of Journey to the Center of the Earth 3D, the next big 3D movie set to open this summer is Fly Me to the Moon on August 8. From Summit Entertainment and distributed by nWave, Fly me to the Moon revolves around a group of houseflies that stow away on the NASA’s Apollo 11 mission and features the voices of astronaut Buzz Aldrin as himself, and actors including Christopher Lloyd, Tim Curry, Ed Begley Jr. among many others. Fly Me to the Moon is the first made-for-3D animated feature film, and will be release only in 3D and IMAX. Charlotte Huggins serves as a producer on both movies.
Word was a few months back that a sequel to School of Rock was in the works, which was followed by news that writer Mike White, who penned the first movie, had submitted a script for a follow-up movie. Now it looks like we may really see the sequel, with Variety reporting that Paramount is going to make the movie, titled School of Rock 2: America Rocks, which will see the return of Jack Black as the star. Also returning for the sequel are director Richard Linklater and producer Scott Rudin.
We’ll have to wait a little longer for Max and his wild rumpus to begin as Warner Bros. has reportedly moved the release of Spike Jonze’s feature film version of Where the Wild Things Are, per the LA Times. The newspaper spoke to studio head Alan Horn, who explained, “We’ve given him more money and, even more importantly, more time for him to work on the film. We’d like to find a common ground the represents Spike’s vision but still offers a film that really delivers for a broad-based audience. We obviously still have a challenge on our hands. But I wouldn’t call it a problem, simply a challenge.” Featuring a script by Dave Eggers, the movie, which is based on Maurice Sendak’s classic kid’s book Where the Wild Things Are, had most recently been slated for a 2009 release.
MORE KIDS STUFF
Over the weekend PBS showed off three of its new kid targeted series to those assembled at the Television Critics Association including two for PBS Kids and one for PBS Kids Go! This September 1, 2008 PBS Kids will premiere preschool-aimed series Sid the Science Kid from The Jim Henson Company and KCET, and Martha Speaks from WGBH Boston and Studio B Productions. Beginning January 2009 PBS Kids Go! will premiere Sesame Workshop’s new incarnation of The Electric Company.
In other PBS Kids programming news, the second season of Mama Mirabelle’s Home Movies from National Geographic Kids Entertainment will debut the weekend of September 6-7 (check local listings). Additionally, Random House is set to publish two new soft-cover tie-in books for the series, titled Anybody Home? and Hide and Seek, on August 26, and Warner Home Video will release the first season of Mama Mirabelle’s Home Movies on DVD on September 23.
Star Farm Productions has launched www.kaimiracode.com a new website that coincides with the release last week of the kids/teen-aimed Kaimira: The Sky Village, Book One , the first book in a series published by Candlewick Press in the US and Walker Books in the UK, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. The new website features a code-breaker, book trailer and lost artifacts that offer new clues to readers. In April, Star Farm Productions and BBC Worldwide unveiled plans to develop the fantasy book property Kaimira for multiple formats including TV, feature films and a MMOG.
Jupiter Telecommunications (J:Com), the largest MSO in Japan, has teamed with MTV Networks Japan to launch four Nickelodeon animated series (4 episodes per month, 16 episodes in total for each) as of this month on J:Com Digital’s free VOD service including SpongeBob SquarePants, Dora the Explorer, Rugrats and The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius. The shows are available to some 1.2 million J:Com VOD HH that subscribe to J:Com Digital. At the same time J:Com has also begun televising SpongeBob SquarePants weekdays at 2:30p on its community channel, J:Com Channel.
Nickelodeon’s sixth annual Australian Kids’ Choice Awards will slime Melbourne when the show airs from there for the first time on Saturday, October 11, 2008. For the fourth year running the show will again be executive produced by John Leahy of Pogue Productions. Kids are invited to nominate their favorites in a range of categories at www.nickelodeon.com.au from now through July 27, and will then be asked to vote for nominees in August and September.
