Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Monday, July 12, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

The Jensen Project, the second family-targeted made-for-TV movie from the partnership between Procter & Gamble (P&G) and Walmart, is set to premiere Friday, July 16 at 8p on NBC.  The sci-fi story follows Claire and Matt Thompson, geniuses and former scientists, who, after a 16-year absence, return to work as part of a secret community doing research to solve the world’s problems.  The Thompson’s and their tech-savvy son become involved in stopping a rogue faction of their group from placing a potentially dangerous technology into the wrong hands.  The TV movie stars Kellie Martin, LeVar Burton, Patricia Richardson and Brady Smith and newcomers Justin Kelly and Alyssa Diaz.  The soundtrack for The Jensen Project was produced by Randy Jackson and includes songs from Jordin Sparks, Brooke White and Alisan, Ilsey & Jordan.  The movie DVD and soundtrack will be available in a bonus pack exclusively at Walmart from Saturday, July 17.  The Jensen Project follows the TV movie Secrets of the Mountain, which debuted on NBC n April (4/16/10).  A third made-for-TV movie under the P&G and Walmart partnership, A Walk in MY Shoes, is currently in post-production and set to air later this year, with a fourth movie slated to begin production this fall.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Production on Summit Entertainment‘s The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, comprised of two separate films, will begin in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and Vancouver over the next year beginning this fall.  Bill Condon (Dreamgirls, Kinsey) will direct both Breaking Dawn movies, which will feature Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner along many other members of the other previous Twilight movies.  The first of the Breaking Dawn films is scheduled for release in theaters on November 18, 2011.  Based on the fourth novel in Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight book series, the movies are being penned by Melissa Rosenberg with Wyck Godfrey, Karen Rosenfelt and Meyer producing.

Coolabi has begun production on the animated preschool series Poppy Cat (52×11) with co-production partner King Rollo Films for Nick Jr UK.  Based on the popular Poppy Cat books by author/illustrator Lara Jones, the Poppy Cat series is slated to debut on Nick Jr UK in 2011.  Additionally, a range of pre-sales have been inked with international broadcasters already signed to take the series including: Nick Jr Australia; RTE (Ireland); YLE (Finland); TV2 (Norway); and TVO, SCN and Knowledge Network (all Canada).  Cake Entertainment is handling global TV distribution for the series and will showcase Poppy Cat at Mipcom Jr. this fall.

Rights holder The Rastamouse Company has begun production on the stop-motion animated preschool series Rastamouse (52×11) for CBeebies. The series, which features a reggae-based soundtrack produced by The Rastamouse Company and composer Andrew Kingslow, is scheduled to premiere in early 2011.  Based on the Rastamouse books by Michael De Souza and Genevieve Webster, the series was commissioned by CBeebies and is being produced by indie production company Three Stones Media‘s Greg Boardman and Eugenio Perez in association with animation house Dinamo Productions and publishers Little RootsDecode Enterprises and DHX Licensing, subsidiaries of DHX Media, will handle worldwide TV sales (excluding UK), and worldwide licensing and merchandising.  EMI Music Publishing is investing in the production of the series, with further investment in the production from Decode and the Wales Creative IP fund.

MORE KIDS STUFF

The 10th season of Degrassi will debut in primetime on TeenNick in a telenovela-style format this summer.  Following the new original Degrassi 2-hour TV movie, The Heat is On, debuting Monday, July 19 at 9p, the new season of the series will premiere in a primetime serialized format for six straight weeks, Mondays-Thursdays at 9p, through August 26. Additionally, TeenNick will air a weekly two-hour encore of the week’s past episodes each Friday night 9-11p.

Cartoon Network premieres the new animated series Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated tonight at 7p.  Produced by Warner Bros. Animation, this time around Hanna Barbera’s Mystery Inc. teen crew solves crimes in their town of Crystal Cove, while also dealing with regular teen issues including friends, school and family.  Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated features the voices of Frank Welker (What’s New, Scooby-Doo?) as Fred/Scooby/Barty Blake, Mindy Cohn (The Facts of Life) as Velma, Grey Delisle (Batman: The Brave and the Bold) as Daphne and Matthew Lillard (The Scooby Doo films, Without A Paddle) as Shaggy.  The series is executive produced by Sam Register (Teen Titans, Ben 10, Batman: The Brave and the Bold), with Spike Brandt and Tony Cervone (both Duck Dodgers, Back at the Barnyard, Space Jam) serving as supervising producers.

HRTV, Horse Racing TV, grows its programming lineup to include the kid-targeted live-action series The Saddle Club ( www.saddleclubtv.com ), which will premiere in the channel’s Equestrian Life Programming Block today, Monday, July 12 at 8p.  Based on the book series by Bonnie Bryant, The Saddle Club TV series was produced by Crawfords Productions and Protocol Entertainment.

Univision will air the 7th Annual Premios Juventud Youth Awards live from Miami, Florida this Thursday, July 15 at 8p.  Univision will also present a pre-show covering the celebrity arrivals to Premios Juventud beginning at 7p.  The annual kudos fest will feature performances by Shakira, Enrique Iglesias with Juan Luis Guerra, Pitbull, Juanes, and Wisin y Yandel with Hollywood freestyle dance team (Step Up 3), among other music artists, as well as a host of TV novella stars and personalities.  Among the awards handed out that evening, two artists will be recognized with special awards, singer/songwriter Shakira will be given the Supernova award and legendary artist Juan Luis Guerra will receive special recognition as an Idolo de Generaciones.  Pre-show coverage continues to be available at PremiosJuventud.com ( www.premiosjuventud.com ), including performer highlights, exclusive photos, news and trivia, moments from past shows.  Additionally, video from performers and past shows will be available online and via the Univision Video App for Smartphones.

DQ Entertainment inks two new exclusive broadcast deals with Korea’s The Education Broadcasting System (EBS) and Canada’s Tele-Quebec, for its 3D animated TV series The Jungle Book (52×11).  Under the deal, EBS has exclusive free-TV rights to broadcast the animated series in the Republic of Korea for three years.  Tele-Quebec has secured exclusive free-TV rights to broadcast the series in French (Le Livre De La Jungle) in French speaking Canadian.

Spain’s Imira Entertainment strikes a deal with RTP (Portugal) for HIT Entertainment‘s new CG animated preschool series Angelina Ballerina  The Next Steps (40×12).  In addition Imira also renews deals for HIT series in Spain with Forta channels ETB and TV Galicia.  Under the deals, ETB re-ups its agreement for Pingu (seasons 1 and 2), while also picking up seasons 3-6 of the series, with TV Galicia renewing for Pingu and Sheeep.

Additionally, HIT Entertainment and Discovery Kids Latin America recently debuted new episodes of the CG animated series Angelina Ballerina – The Next Steps (Angelina Ballerina, Los Siguientes Pasos/Angelina Ballerina, Os Seguintes Passos) and Thomas & Friends (Thomas y sus amigos/Thomas e seus amigos) in Latin America.  Characters from both series have also joined the Discovery Kids online platform in Latin America TuDiscoveryKids.com ( www.tudiscoverykids.com ).

Aardman Rights completes further pre-sales for its new mixed live-action and animated TV series Wallace & Gromit’s World of Invention (6×30) with broadcasters France Televisions (France) and Super RTL (Germany).  The series was commissioned by BBC One, which plans to debut the series later this year.  Under its agreement France Televisions also picks up the four short Wallace & Gromit films and the cracking Contraptions TV series, as well as seasons one and two of Aardman’s Shaun the Sheep.  In Germany, Super RTL, which is seen in Germany, Austria and Switzerland and already has a deal in place for the Wallace & Gromit films, acquires the third series of the preschool series Timmy Time, which is set for delivery in 2011.

MARKETING/LICENSING

MTV Networks jumps into the social gaming world with the acquisition of San Francisco-based Social Express, a developer of social games.  The terms of the deal were not released.  MTV Networks will develop social games based on original IP, as well as shows and characters from MTV, Nickelodeon and its other brands, with the first game to be introduced in Q3 2010.  Further plans include Social Express launching a publishing platform for indie game developers.  Social Express will be integrated into Nickelodeon Digital, with Social Express co-founder and CEO Tony Espinoza overseeing social gaming strategy and development as VP and GM/Social Gaming for MTV Networks’ Nickelodeon Kids & Family Group.  Neil Souza, co-founder of Social Express and FoulPlay Media, will be VP/Technology, Social Games. Both will report to Dave Williams, SVP and GM/Games, Nickelodeon Kids & Family Group, who reports to Stephen Youngwood, EVP/Digital, Nickelodeon/MTVN Kids & Family Group.  MTVN game sites, which attracted 22+ million unique visitors in May 2010, per ComScore, include AddictingGamers.com, Shockwave.com, Nick.com Games, Nick.com Arcade, and Neopets, GameTrailers, and Xfire.

Pacific Entertainment inks a licensing deal with Hong Kong-based Winfat Industrial for Baby Genius preschool-targeted laptops and learning boards.  Under the deal Winfat will manufacture electronic learning aids including bilingual preschool laptop computers for the US through 2013.  The first products in line are slated for release in spring 2011.  Baby Genius licensing agency The Joester Loria Group brokered the deal.

Macy’s is headed full force back-to-school this year with tween, teen and college targeted efforts including new celebrity lines, such as Material Girl from Madonna and her daughter, a Jessica Simpson line, and Kouture by Kimora.  Macy’s will also offer a new young men’s targeted brand, line extensions for several juniors brands, and exclusive Glee-branded products.  On the tech side, through a partnership with Microsoft, the retailer will offer an exclusive preview of the new Kinect controller-free gaming for Xbox 360 in 13 stores on July 15, and on August 12 will launch a new teen-targeted mstylelab mini site ( www.macys.com/mstylelab.com), the latter will offer a contest for kids and tweens and will feature Seventeen Magazine editor-in-chief Anne Shoket.  Macy’s is also partnering with Kidz Bop for a back-to-school promotion that will feature the Kidz Bop Kids in a national TV commercial showcasing a song from the newest release, Kidz Bop 18, which is available at retail from July 20.  The TV spot will run from late July through mid September, the Kidz Bop Kids will also be featured in Macy’s back-to-school direct mail and will make in-store appearances where they’ll perform at select Macy’s stores.  More information about the promotion and a sweepstakes can be found at Macys.com/KidzBop ( www.macys.com/kidzbop ).

Analyst with Cartoon Network Ratings & Online Research.

Canada’s CCI Entertainment (Cambium Catalyst International) promotes Rekha Shah to VP/Distribution & Co-Production.  As part of CCI’s plan to expand and diversify its international financing and marketing efforts, Shah will focus on various production financing opportunities while also continuing to serve in her ongoing role on the company’s distribution team.  Prior to joining CCI two years ago Shah was in North America sales with Alliance Atlantis and then Director/Sales, Atlantis Films.
