Good Morning. It’s Monday, July 10, 2006, and this is your first early morning briefing.
Another summer broadcast series bites the dust – ABC’s How to Get the Guy had its last airing on July 3 when it earned a soft 1.2 rating among the ever-important A18-49 crowd. Supernanny jumps into the time period starting tonight at 10p at least for the next couple of weeks. One Ocean View is set to launch in the time period on July 31.
ABC’s daytimer The View is lining up its guest hosts for July (the show goes on hiatus from August 4 thru September 5 when it returns with Rosie O’Donnell as a regular). Of the list of guests so far, none of them are among your top choices for the Star Jones replacement: Shannen Doherty, Katherine McPhee (American Idol, as if I had to tell you), Kelly Monaco (former Dancing with the Stars competitor and General Hospital regular), and Carrie Ann Inaba (the judge from Dancing with the Stars). If you’ve been keeping track, guest hosts since Jones’ sudden departure have included Susan Lucci, Brandy and daytime soap One Life to Live’s Renee Goldsberry. Will any of these be chosen to become a permanent chatterer on the show? Not necessarily. Plans are to continue the search in earnest when the show returns in the fall.
NBC plans a new semi-scripted series to follow NFL Sunday night football games starting this fall. It has ordered 17 episodes of Sports Action Team to air on all NBC affiliates, produced by Towers Productions Inc., in association with NBC O&O WMAQ/Chicago. According to Hollywood Reporter, the story is about a sad group of sports reporters as they head out to get the big stories from real sports athletes, managers, celebs and fans.
Fox’s 24 is adding another regular cast member with Peter MacNicol as a high level government employee. Fans of CBS’ series Numb3rs knows MacNichol has been involved in that show since its debut 18 months ago, and he will continue with Numb3rs, working on that show simultaneously with 24.
Buena Vista and its band of Buccaneers earned their swag justly at the box office with Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest taking in an estimated $132 million in its opening weekend. Dead Man’s Chest gave the heave-ho to several records including breaking the $100 million marker in its first two days, knocking Spider-Man from his perch who brought in $114.8 million in 2002. The sequel to Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl and Dead Man’s Chest will be followed with Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End, slated for release on May 25, 2007, reportedly with Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards appearing as Capt. Jack Sparrow’s father.
Weekend Box Office Estimates: July 7-9, 2006
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest (Buena Vista) $132.0 million – opening weekend
Superman Returns (Warner Bros.) $21.8 million – 2 wk total $141.7m
The Devil Wears Prada (Fox) $15.6 million – 2 wk total $63.7m

Cars (Buena Vista) $10.3 million – 5 wk total $205.5m
Nacho Libre (Paramount) $3.3 million – 4 wk total $73.8m
The Lake House (Warner Bros.) $2.8 million – 4 wk total $45.6m
Fast & Furious: Tokyo Drift (Universal) $2.5 million – 4 wk total $57.3m

The Break Up (Universal) $1.6 million – 6 wk total $114.3m

Sad news from the daytime soap arena – actor Benjamin Henrickson who has been a part of CBS’ As the World Turns cast for the past 20 years in the role of Detective Hal Munson, was found dead last Monday. He committed suicide with a single gun shot to his head. Henrickson was 55. He was a daytime Emmy in 2003 as best Supporting Actor. His final scene on As the World Turns is scheduled for July 12.
Mission Broadcasting, Inc. has hired Marty Houston to be Station Manager for KFTA in Northwest Arkansas which will become a FOX affiliate in late August.
The Board of Directors of Narrowstep Inc has named Jill Thoerle the interim CFO, effective June 30, following the departure of Steve Crowther, who left the company June 29.
Bravo announces four key promotions with its programming and production team: Frances Berwick has been promoted to EVP/Programming and Production, where she currently manages all programming for the network including original productions, development, scheduling and acquisitions. Frances was responsible for developing and producing the Bravo series Queer Eye and Celebrity Poker Showdown among other hits; Andrew Cohen becomes SVP/Programming and Production, and will oversee current productions such as Top Chef and Project Runway; David Serwatka is elevated to VP/Programming and Production and will continue to supervise programming and production and be producer for such shows as Top Chef and Blow Out; and David O’Connell was made VP/Production, where he will oversee production and supervise tasks relating to production of original series and specials for the network.
Alexandre Piel will join Télé Images International as Head of International Co-Productions. He will manage all pre-financing for various productions from animation to documentations and drama, and he will be responsible for sales in France and the U.K.
Thursday – A18-49 Analysis: CBS surpassed the competition to win Thursday night with a 2.8/9 A18-49, according to fast affiliate ratings from Nielsen Media Research. FOX made it to second place with 2.6/8, and then came ABC 2.2/7, NBC 1.9/6, UNIV 1.6/5, UPN 0.7/2, WB 0.7/2 and TELE 0.4/1. At 8p, CBS with the premiere of Big Brother: All Stars did best at 2.8/10. FOX then took the 9p hour with a 3.3/10 for So You Think You Can Dance?. At 10p CBS took control, albeit narrowly, with an encore of CSI at 3.0/9; ABC’s second repeat of Grey’s Anatomy was a tenth of a point off behind at 2.9/9.
