News from the Television Critics Association Winter 2013 Press Tour:

NBC has approved a new dramedy titled Camp to air next summer.  The 13-episode series is described similar to Meatballs and Dazed and Confused and portrays family life at a chaotic summer camp where the parents drink while “teenagers make gleeful mischief and fall in and out of love.”  The series is from Liz Heldens and Peter Elkoff who are serving as executive producers along with Gail Berman, Lloyd Braun and Gene Stein.

A&E Network has a new real-life series, The Governor’s Wife set to premiere February 27 at 10p.  The series follows former Louisiana Governor Edwin Edwards and his wife Trina, a woman 50 years his junior.  Edwards and Trina met as pen pals while he was serving his prison sentence for bribery and extortion.  They got married when he was released.  The series watches as Trina attempts to fit in with the former governor’s world and social life which includes Edward’s daughters who are twice her age along with managing her teenage sons from a previous marriage.  The Governor’s Wife is produced for A&E by Leftfield Pictures and SSS Entertainment. 

Another original real-life series has been approved by A&E Network.  Pre-production has started on Rodeo Girls (wt) from The Weinstein Company and the network has ordered eight one-hour episodes.  Rodeo Girls follows women who compete on the pro rodeo circuit.  Jupiter Entertainment is also producing.

In other news from A&E Network, the premiere date for new original scripted drama series Bates Motel is set for March 18 at 10p.  Bates Motel, starring Vera Farmiga, Freddie Highmore, Max Thieriot, Olivia Cooke and Nicola Peltz, is a contemporary prequel to the film Psycho giving viewers the backstory of Norman Bates through his teenage years.  The first season also co-stars Nestor Carbonell and Mike Vogel.  Bates Motel is produced by Universal Television for A&E.

BBC America acquired the eight-episode drama Broadchurch which will air as part of the network’s Dramaville block in 2013.  Broadchurch stars David Tenant, Olivia Colman, Vicky McClure and Arthur Darvill and explores what happens to a small British seaside village that becomes the focus of a major murder investigation.  The series is from Kudos Film and Television.  

Bounty hunter Duane “Dog” Chapman will star in a new 10-episode series this year on CMT.  Tentatively titled DOG the series features Duane and his wife Beth as they track down dangerous criminals.  Duane’s previous series on A&E Network, Dog The Bounty Hunter was cancelled last year after eight seasons.

The web series Drunk History is coming to TV on Comedy Central this summer.  Comedy Central okayed the weekly half-hour series with eight episodes highlighting historical reenactments by A-list talent and featuring drunken storytellers.  Derek Waters created and stars in the online series which boasted such celebrities as Jack Black, Jim Carrey, Zooey Deschanel, Jason Ritter and others making appearances.  Drunk History is produced by Gary Sanchez Productions.  Comedy Central also renewed its scripted comedy series Workaholics for seasons four and five containing 13 episodes each.  New episodes of Workaholics will air starting January 16 at 10p.

Hallmark Channel’s first primetime scripted series, Debbie Macomber’s Cedar Cove is scheduled to premiere June 8 at 9p, a week after the two-hour original movie/backdoor pilot of the same name airs on June 1.  Andie MacDowell and Dylan Neal star in Cedar Cove which is based on the book series about a judge in a small town and the new newspaper editor who becomes her love interest.  Hallmark Channel related it has a second scripted series in development based on Janette Oke’s When Calls the Heart slated for a 2014 launch. 

Cher has inked a development deal with Logo.  Terms of the deal were not revealed though network SVP/Original Programming Brent Zacky said Cher is collaborating with comedian Ron Zimmerman for a pilot script set in early 1960s Hollywood. 

New 2013 programming including four new original series was announced by OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network.  The new series include Blackboard Wars about the dramatic transformation of New Orleans’ John McDonogh High School.  Produced by Discovery Studios, Blackboard Wars will premiere in March.  Golden Sisters is a real-life comedy following three sisters, Mary, Josie and Teresa who became famous after a web video of the ladies watching a celebrity sex tape went viral.  Golden Sisters will premiere in 2013 and is produced by LMNO Productions.  Raising Whitley (wt) is a docu-series following actress/comedienne Kym Whitley and her chaotic collection of friends whom she calls The Village.  Raising Whitley premieres in 2013 and is produced by Pilgrim Studios.  The fourth new series is Dogfellas (wt) and follows James “Head” Guiliani, a former street enforcer for the mafia and one of John Gotti’s most trusted men whose life-changing encounter with a stray dog inspired him to open Brooklyn’s top dog grooming parlor.  Dogfellas will premiere in 2013 and is produced by NERD TV.  Other series premieres on OWN include its new one-hour drama The Haves And The Have Nots from Tyler Perry Studios debuting May 29; Love Thy Neighbor, the half-hour comedy produced by Tyler Perry Stuidios will also debut May 29; upcoming episodes of Oprah’s Next Chapter will feature Drew Barrymore, LL Cool J and Cissy Houston airing on Sundays at 9p; Oprah’s Master Class co-produced by Harpo Studios and @radical.media returns in March; new episodes of Oprah: Where Are They Now? produced by Harpo Studios and returning in March will highlight Omarosa, rapper Bow Wow, “Octomom” Nadya Suleman, Dennis Rodman, Gennifer Flowers, Heidi Fleiss and Columbine Families; and Iyanla: Fix My Life produced by Harpo Studios will be back this spring.

Historical fantasy drama Da Vinci’s Demons will premiere April 12 at 10p on Starz following the finale of Spartacus: War of the Damned.  After its premiere, Da Vinci’s Demons will move to its regular time slot of Fridays at 9p.  The eight-episode series, produced by Adjacent Productions tells the untold story of Leonardo da Vinci during his youth in Renaissance Florence.  BBC Worldwide distributes the series internationally with Fox International Channels picking up with series for its portfolio of 200 pay-TV entertainment channels.

Sundance Channel approved a new unscripted series, The Writers’ Room which takes a behind-the-scenes look into the writers’ rooms of TV shows.  The series will be presented in partnership with Entertainment Weekly and the six-episode half-hour series is slated to premiere in the second half of this year.  The Writers’ Room will be a roundtable talk show format spotlighting creative talent from to-be-announced TV series discussing their best choices, toughest decisions and biggest mistakes.  RelativityREAL is producing the series for Sundance. 

~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

Discovery Channel introduces viewers to modern-day pirates patrolling the coast of southern Florida when Shipwreck Men premieres January 14 at 9p.  The series follows four different salvage companies who scan the waters day and night looking for sinking vessels in this competitive and lucrative marine salvage industry.  Shipwreck Men is produced by Discovery Studios for Discovery Channel.   

National Geographic Channel follows elite Combat Rescue officers in Afghanistan as they go into the heat of battle to save critically wounded soldiers in the new series Inside Combat Rescue, premiering this February.  The three-part series offers a 360-degree view of this band of brothers who are part warrior, part medic and part guardian angel.  Inside Combat Rescue is produced for National Geographic Channel by National Geographic Television. 

Original programming heats up E!’s schedule under the banner of White Hot Winter.  A new season of Kourtney & Kim Take Miami premieres over two nights on January 20 and 21 at 9p.  E!’s new series Chasing The Saturdays following one of Britain’s biggest vocal groups also debuts over two nights on January 20 and 21 at 10p.  Mocu-series After Lately bows a new season February 25 at 1030p.  E! will also take viewers to the awards events with coverage under its Live from the Red Carpet shows for the Golden Globes on January 13; the Screen Actor Guild Awards on January 27; Grammy Awards on February 10; and the Academy Awards on February 24.

Next month Chiller brings back its countdown franchise, with a new installment, Chiller 13: Most Horrifying Hook-Ups counting down Hollywood’s most fatal attractions of all time on February 8 at 8p.  Chiller 13 is produced by Associated Television International.  On March 5 at 9p, Chiller also debuts the dark comedy series Pushing Daisies with two back-to-back episodes airing each Tuesday.  Chiller will air seasons one and two, 22 total episodes, and this marks the first time a network will air the series since its original run on ABC. 

Gannett is rolling out a new graphics package for its broadcast stations that will coordinate with the USA TODAY color scheme which unites all Gannett properties.  In the Gannett station’s newscasts, viewers will see new lower-thirds showing upcoming segments presented in different colors and offering additional information.  All Gannett stations will launch the new graphics package by the end of first quarter.  Stations in Tampa, FL and Greensboro, NC though have already launched the new look.  In addition, the newscasts will sport a newly-created theme anthem, This is Home written by Gari Music.

MTV reports its new unscripted series Buckwild averaged 2.5 million total viewers with its back-to-back premiere episodes last Thursday night.  The first episode at 10p attracted 2.4 million total viewers and the 1030p episode did a bit better at 2.6 million total viewers.  Buckwild also averaged a 1.3 rating among A18-49 and a 1.9 rating with P12-34.

~ DISTRIBUTION, CARRIAGE & CLEARANCE ~

Universal Pictures renewed its domestic output agreement with HBO, agreeing to a long-term extension.  The renewal deal will keep Universal Pictures’ and Focus Features’ films on HBO in the domestic pay TV network window into the next decade.  The partnership between HBO and Universal Pictures goes back to 2003.

Former Buffy star Sarah Michelle Gellar is considering a return to television in a comedy currently in development at 20th Century Fox Television.  Gellar would play a wife in a sitcom about what parents do while kids aren’t at home.  Shepard Boucher (Men at Work) wrote the spec script and David Hemingson and Margaret Riley are on board as EPs.

CBS handed the title role of its multi-camera comedy pilot Mom from Chuck Lorre to Anna Faris (The Dictator, The House Bunny and the Scary Movie franchise).  She will play a newly sober mom who tries to pull her life together in the Napa Valley.  Lorre co-wrote the script with his Two and a Half Men colleagues Eddie Gorodetsky and Gemma Baker. 

Casting Call: HSN is casting for new, full-time female hosts age 30-50 years and all ethnicities will be considered.  The ideal HSN host will be an aspirational shopper who loves to share her thoughts and ideas; must have at least 5-7 years experience in entertainment, news, lifestyle or media fields; and be well-opinioned, friendly and passionate.  Sales experience encouraged but not necessary.  HSN is located in Tampa, FL and all potential hosts should be prepared to relocate there.  Please submit your photo, resume, bio and reel to: [email protected] with “HSN HOST” in the subject line.

Wednesday A18-49 Analysis:  NBC had the winning lineup Wednesday delivering a 2.1/6 among A18-49, according to final primetime national ratings from Nielsen. Univision’s Por Ella Soy Eva did best at 8p at 1.9/5 followed by new episodes of NBC’s comedies Whitney and Guys With Kids at an average of 1.8/5 in second place.  At 9p, NBC’s Law & Order: SVU was #1 at 2.2/6 and Univision’s Amores Verdaderos was a close #2 at 2.1/5.  NBC had the final win of the night during 10p with Chicago Fire at 2.4/7 and Univision was second with Amor Bravio at 1.6/4.

Thursday A18-49 Analysis:  CBS delivered a #1 with the A18-49 viewers Thursday with a 3.8/10, according to final primetime national ratings from Nielsen.  CBS won a clean sweep this night starting with at 8p its comedies The Big Bang Theory and Two and a Half Men posting an average of 5.3/15 and Univision’s Por Ella Soy Eva was next at 1.9/5.  CBS’ Person of Interest topped at 9p with a 3.4/9 and Univision followed with Amores Verdadros at 2.1/6.  Then at 10p, CBS polished off the final win with Elementary at 2.6/7 and Univision was once again in second with Amor Bravio at 1.6/4.
