01/07/08

Good Morning.  It’s Monday, January 7, 2008, and this is your first early morning briefing. And by the way, as you read thru this edition, you’ll notice a couple of format changes. Let us know what you think – just hit reply to this email.

Last Friday, the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) said many of its members are expected to balk at crossing striking writers’ picket lines at the Golden Globe Awards scheduled to air on NBC Sunday night. NBC said it will continue with plans to air the awards show even if A-list stars such as Julia Roberts and Johnny Depp refuse to appear. Also on Friday, a dozen publicity firms representing a number of actors, writers and directors nominated for Golden Globes as well as many stars asked to be presenters, sent a letter to NBC Universal CEO Jeff Zucker, indicating their clients would not cross the picket line, unless an interim agreement was reached with the WGA. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which gives out the Golden Globes, said a solution to the problem may happen today.

If you’re wondering about tonight’s Critics Choice Awards on VH1 – this will not be picketed by the WGA and celebrities are expected to attend, because VH1 and the production company for the awards fest, are not WGA signatories.  Basically, it’s a non-union gig.

Tonight’s Premieres:
ABC: Dance War: Bruno vs. Carrie Ann at 8p
NBC: Medium at 10p
Travel Channel: Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations at 10p
E!: Chelsea Lately at 1130p

And returning tonight, sans writers:
Comedy Central: Daily Show with Jon Stewart at 11p, and Colbert Report with Stephen Colbert at 1130p

Changes should be apparent this morning at CBS’ The Early Show  a new set, new format with upgraded music and graphics as well as a new co-anchor, Maggie Rodriguez. The show’s revamp led by executive producer Shelley Ross, who was hired in September, involved 43 stations across the country which were asked to dump their local content in favor of airing The Early Show intact for two full hours starting at 7a EST. Under Ross, another goal is to make The Early Show newsier with the show pursuing interviews with newsmakers.

The CW announced schedule switches and series returns over the next several months:
Jan 15: Reaper returns (and then later moves to Thursdays at 9p as of Feb 28)
Jan 28: Gossip Girl moves to Mondays at 8p
Feb 10: Everybody Hates Chris, Aliens in America, Girlfriends and The Game all move to Sunday
Feb 18: Pussycat Dolls Present: Girlicious season premiere at 9p
Feb 20: America’s Next Top Model season premiere at 8p
March 11: Beauty and the Geek season premiere at 8p
May 2008: Farmer Wants a Wife expected to debut

For the 16th edition of Survivor, CBS announced a new format twist. Survivor: Micronesia  Fans vs. Favorites, which premieres February 7 at 8p, will have 10 fans of the series compete against 10 former castaways. Both tribes will be situated on the Rock Islands of Palau, Micronesia with their skills as previous players and dedicated watchers of the show put to the test.

SCI FI Channel brings a new documentary series to its schedule starting tomorrow night at 9p called Guinea Pig. In this six episode, half-hour series professional daredevil Ryan Stock, with assistance from his fiance Amber Lynn Walker, will try out various extreme experiments to test his body and mind. The series is produced by Frantic Films.

As part of its new Thursday night MOJO Money Night programming block, MOJO HD will premiere Start-Up Junkies January 24 at 10p. This new hi-def financial series airing over eight 30m episodes will spotlight entrepreneurs as they launch a new company and nurture it through various stages. Start-Up Junkies, produced by Screaming Flea Productions, joins Wall Street Warriors and Bobby G: Adventure Capitalist each Thursday night.

Debmar-Mercury cleared Trivial Pursuit: America Plays, the first-run, half-hour syndicated game show in more than 55% of the U.S. including eight of the top 10 markets for a September 2008 launch. The series will air on FOX affiliates in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Washington, D.C. and Baltimore. Other station groups to air the new series include Cox, CBS, Belo, Gannett, Scripps, Raycom Media and Weigel Broadcasting. The show is a joint effort between Debmar-Mercury and Hasbro, Inc. and the TV format is created and produced by Wheeler-Sussman Productions.

Global independent distributor, Beyond Distribution’s series Big City Broker was acquired by Fine Living Network. Produced by JV Productions Inc for HGTV, Big City Broker is a behind-the-scenes look at a private, U.S. real estate firm run by ambitious broker, Brad Lamb and featuring his equally motivated sales team.

The Weather Channel, the largest standalone cable network and owned by the privately held firm Landmark Communications, is seeking a buyer. Potential new owners abound – including GE’s NBC, News Corp.’s FOX or Comcast. Currently, TWC reaches 95.4 million cable/satellite subscribers and is valued at approximately $5 billion.

CBS, which bought CSTV in late 2005, will now wrap the college sports network’s sales, marketing, public relations and online properties into CBS Sports effective immediately, according to The New York Times. CSTV will now be led by Tony Petitti, EVP, CBS Sports and Sean McManus, President, CBS News and Sports. Brian Bedol, one of CSTV’s last remaining founding partners will stay on for a few months to work with Tony during the transition period and later will become a senior advisor to Leslie Moonves.

CYNOPSIS DIGITAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY reporting this week from CES in Las Vegas:  Microsoft signed a series of deals with studios such as NBC Universal, Disney, MGM and Showtime to beef up content offerings of the Xbox Live and MSN platforms. A joint Microsoft/NBCU agreement focused on the “long tail” of Olympics coverage, for instance, delivering 2,200 hours of live event video coverage and more than 3,000 hours of on-demand video content via MSN-powered NBCOlympics.com. The deals will help the software giant compete with Apple in the digital video distribution space, according to Bill Gates in his 11th and perhaps his last CES keynote. Claiming the world had just lived through its first “Digital Decade,” Gates predicted the next one would be more focused on connecting people.  Click here to read the entire DIGITAL edition .  (Or to listen to the Cynopsis Digital Podcast click here or subscribe to it at iTunes here .)

CYNOPSIS KIDS – TODAY’S TOP STORY:
Hasbro, Inc has acquired board game company Cranium Inc., for a base estimated purchase price of $77.5 million.  The clever folks at Cranium set up shop a decade by Richard Tait, co-founder and Grand Poo-Bah, yes a real title, and Whit Alexander co-founder and Chief Noodler, and yes again.  Under the signed merger agreement, a newly formed subsidiary of Hasbro will merge with Cranium, and thus making it a subsidiary of Hasbro.  Cranium shareholders have yet to vote on the deal.  Cranium is the maker of games including Cranium, Cadoo, Hullabaloo and Zooreka.  Now, add the fact that Hasbro inked a licensing deal with Electronic Arts over the summer, and perhaps we’ll see some Cranium video games?  And then can a TV game show be that far behind?  Click here to read the entire KIDS edition.

CYN OPSIS INTERNATIONAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY:  German pay TV network Premiere has acquired the youth-targeted Giga Digital with Premiere Star header, Wolfram Winter, at the helm.  Following the buy, Premiere is looking to add the free-to-air gaming/lifestyle channel, owned by NBC Universal recently, to go beyond its pay TV offerings.
