Good morning, it’s Monday, January 7, 2008, and this is your first early morning digital briefing, coming to you from the CES convention in Las Vegas.
Microsoft signed a series of deals with studios such as NBC Universal, Disney, MGM and Showtime to beef up content offerings of the Xbox Live and MSN platforms. A joint Microsoft/NBCU agreement focused on the “long tail” of Olympics coverage, for instance, delivering 2,200 hours of live event video coverage and more than 3,000 hours of on-demand video content via MSN-powered NBCOlympics.com. The deals will help the software giant compete with Apple in the digital video distribution space, according to Bill Gates in his 11th and perhaps his last CES keynote. Claiming the world had just lived through its first “Digital Decade,” Gates predicted the next one would be more focused on connecting people.
On the eve of the CES, Warner Bros. delivered what may turn out to be the decisive blow against the HD DVD format. The studio, one of the largest publisher of DVDs in Hollywood, announced it will back the rival Sony-developed Blu-ray format exclusively from June 1, 2008, placing five of the top seven studios in the consortium’s camp. The announcement put the Toshiba/Microsoft/Intel HD DVD group into retreat mode heading into the tech world’s biggest confab. Toshiba cancelled a press event it had scheduled for last night and claimed to be “quite surprised” by the decision.
Sony BMG became the last major record label to join Amazon.com’s DRM-free MP3 store, positioning it to give Apple’s iTunes a run for its money. The move comes on the heels of a new report from Nielsen SoundScan documenting a 15% drop to 500.5 million albums sold in 2007. The same report has total music sales (including singles, music DVDs and mp3 tracks) totaling $1.37 billion, a 14% increase from 2006.
Ever the busy beavers, Amazon.com also launched a new software download store beginning with various versions of Turbo Tax.
Access Hollywood.com relaunches today with more video, improved navigation and a simplified new design. Co-host Nancy O’Dell, Executive Producer Rob Silverstein and members of the site’s editorial staff will be on hand tomorrow at NBCU’s booth at CES to demonstrate its features.
TVGuide will be showcasing its suite of cross-platform My TV Guide video guides at the company’s booth (#7932 in Central Hall). A dozen demonstration kiosks in the booth will also showcase Interactive Program Guides (IPG) for consumer electronics and cable, as well as guidance solutions for mobile and online.
Sci Fi Channel‘s Dvice gadget blog received its 1 millionth unique visitor according to NBC Universal. The site will feature streamed broadband video segments from the CES floor this week, hosted by Vanessa Rae.
AtomFilms has taken a whack at election-themed humor with a microsite of games, music videos and gags. The Kung-Fu Election game invites players to choose their favorite candidate and take them into battle against a political enemy. The site was created by Jason Oda in collaboration with BrandFirst Entertainment, the branded content division of The Martin Agency.
LG Electronics announced a new method of transmitting digital TV signals to cell phones and other portable devices. Based on a standard developed a decade ago by a group of technology companies in the U.S., LG says its MPH system has worked out interference issues by improving digital signal processing and other issues, reports The Wall Street Journal.
EchoStar’s Sling Media will unveil a SlingPlayer Mobile edition of its place-shifting software this week, optimized for BlackBerry smartphones. Sling Media will also introduce the next generation of its Slingbox, capable of streaming HD content from a home television source (including over the air HD digital signals, HDTV cable or satellite, or HD DVR’s) to a laptop or desktop computer in and around the house. Customers with broadband upload speeds of 1.5-2 Mbps will be able to view HD on their laptops remotely.
Westinghouse Digital is unveiling a line up of HDTV LCD TVs this week incorporating Wireless HDMI standards that eliminate the need for wires between components, set tops and the televisions.
Gaming hardware manufacturer Creative signed a deal to supply professional gaming group Championship Gaming Series with a line of battle-tested accessories including sound cards, sound processors and headsets.
FremantleMedia Enterprises has chosen mobileStorm to be its email service provider for all of the company’s U.S. media properties. Using mobileStorm’s Stun digital marketing platform, FremantleMedia will be able to send brand-specific email messages to various segments of its overall database.
