Cynopsis: Kids!
01/03/11

Good morning. It’s Monday, January 3, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Today marks the premiere of the new mixed live-action/animated series Wild Kratts (40×30) on PBS Kids Go! (check local listings for times).  Starring real zoologist brothers Chris and Martin Kratt, each episode begins (and ends) with the real life brothers and animals and then transitions into animated segments, where the animated brothers explore what life is like in the wild for these animals.  The series also features a cast of other animated characters including Aviva, a young inventor who creates gadgets for the brothers to use on their animated adventures, Koki an electronic whiz, and Jimmy J, a master gamer and ‘Teleportation Technician,” as well as some evildoers. Wild Kratts is a co-production between 9 Story Entertainment and The Kratt Brothers Company.  Additionally, kids can log onto pbskidsgo.org/wildkratts ( www.pbskidsgo.org/wildkratts) for more information about the series, learn more about animal habitats around the world and play games, watch videos and create their own space.  The previous Kratt TV series include Kratts’ Creatures and Zoboomafoo, among others.  Wild Kratts debuts later this month in Canada.

MORE KIDS STUFF

When Nintendo introduces its new handheld unit, called 3DS, it will feature 3D game play that does not require special glasses to see the 3D effects, which is good news for everyone it seems but kids under six-years-old, per Kotaku.  Nintendo has posted warnings on its website in Japan that say younger kids should avoid the 3D functionality of the new unit because it may damage their eyesight, which isn’t fully developed at such a young age.  The new 3DS unit does allow players to choose 2D or 3D play, as well as providing 3D parental controls so as not to leave it to younger kids to make the correct choice.  Nintendo is also recommending that all gamers using the 3DS unit take a break from playing every half-hour to help prevent eye fatigue, which is different from the recommended hourly break when playing with its DS unit, which offers only 2D play.  Additionally, Nintendo notes that if players become ill while playing to stop playing immediately.  The 3DS will launch this February in Japan, and then in North America and Europe shortly after.  Other electronics companies that produce 3D products have previously issued similar 3D related warnings for their consumer electronics.

Skyhorse Publishing will launch its new kid’s imprint, Sky Pony Press, this year, per Publishers Weekly.  The imprint, slated to publish 15-20 titles this year, debuts with the help of Jean Reynolds, formerly founder/Publisher of Millbrook Press, who is consulting on the project.  Skyhorse, which acquired Arcade Publishing and Allworth Press earlier this year (adding 800+ titles to its library), has also just purchased Sports Publishing (700 titles), which is plans to re-launch in fall 2011 with 40 updated and revised sports book titles.

Program Call: Cynopsis Media will be producing our annual NATPE Shopping Guide sent to all Cynopsis and Cynopsis Kids subscribers on Thursday, January 20, the week before NATPE 2011 in Miami.  If you would like to have your programming included, please send us only the following info for your top 5 shows: title, availability date, number of episodes, length, type (i.e., movie, series, special, etc.), genre and your terms (barter, cash, etc.) as well as your company’s stand/booth location.  To be included in this free and highly-viewed special edition, please send your submission to [email protected] no later than Friday, January 14, 2011. A confirmation email will be sent following each submission from Lisa (if you don’t receive a confirmation email, please resubmit).

MARKETING/LICENSING

The US Postal Service has unveiled its commemorative stamp program for 2011, which includes a series of Disney Pixar movie character stamps, entitled the Send a Hello stamps.  Available beginning August 19, 2011, the Send a Hello series is a pane of 20 stamps including five different designs featuring Pixar characters from its movies Cars (2006, Ratatouille (2007), Toy Story (1995), Up (2009), and Wall*E (2008).  The 2011 stamp program also features arts and entertainment stamps honoring the likes of Mark Twain, Gregory Peck, and Helen Hayes, and Latin music icons Selena, Carlos Gardel, Carmen Miranda, Tito Puente and Celia Cruz, as well as a series of stamps honoring artist Romare Bearden.  Additionally, the US Postal Service will issue a new stamp this summer commemorating Owney, the dog mascot of the Railway Mail Service.  Owney was apparently adored by clerks on the mail-sorting trains at the end of the nineteenth century and considered good luck as no train he rode ever had an accident (sounds like maybe there’s a good movie story there).

Konami Digital Entertainment will introduce Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D’s Trading Card Game Duelist Pack: Yusei 3 on January 25, 2011.  The new Duelist Pack is comprised of 30 cards, with each set featuring eight all new cards, including four new monsters, two new Spell Cards, and two new Traps.  The over all Yusei 3 30-card set includes: 17 common cards; seven rare cards; four super rare cards; two ultra rare cards; and each packs includes five of these Game Cards, and one strategy tip card.  The Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D’s animated series airs in the US on TheCW4Kids’ Saturday morning programming block.
