On Saturday, Comcast and General Electric completed their joint venture transaction involving NBC Universal and Comcast’s cable networks and valued at $30 billion.  The new venture is called NBCUniversal with Comcast owning a 51% stake while GE has 49%.  Comcast will manage the venture and NBCUniversal’s headquarters will be retained in New York City with Steve Burke, who was formerly the COO of Comcast, as head of the company.  Last Thursday, Burke presided over a town hall meeting where he was introduced to NBCU staffers who all received a welcome package containing 25 shares of Comcast stock.

TNT gave The Closer six more episodes extending the series’ final seventh season to 21 total episodes, reports EW.  The network will air 10 episodes this summer, five next winter and the additional six eps during the summer of 2012.  These final six installments will include Kyra Sedgwick portraying Brenda Leigh Johnson though a new major character will be introduced to usher in a spin-off series now in the works and sporting the working title Major Crimes.  Details on the new spinoff series have not been announced other than it will be an edgy drama about criminals not on Death Row.

Beginning tonight, TV One is celebrating Black History Month by presenting Way Black When, a month of primetime programming highlighting the golden age of black culture emanating from the 1970s, ’80s and ’90s.  The four-weeks of programming revolves around a one-hour talk show, Way Black When: Prime Time airing at 10p weeknights showcasing black pop culture icons from the 1970s through the 1990s and hosted by different celebrities.  Sinbad will lead viewers through Way Black When: The ’70s airing tonight through February 4; Niecy Nash will host Way Black When: The ’80s February 7-11; and Chris “Kid” Reid will host Way Black When: The ’90s February 14-18.  During the fourth week, February 21-28, TV One will feature a “Best Of” week including interviews, comedy sketches and performances from the previous three weeks as well as original, never-before-seen content.  Way Black When will repeat each weeknight at 1a.  Additionally, TV One will air movies every weeknight during this month-long celebration that are decade-specific such as Cooley High and Cotton Comes to Harlem from the 1970s; Harlem Nights from the 1980s; and the film Juice from the 1990s.  Way Black When is produced by Kusza Productions and Rush Hour Productions.

Also at TV One, the network has scheduled its first Upfront Presentation to be held in NYC for press and advertisers on February 2nd.

FX’s second season premiere of Archer last Thursday at 10p, delivered 986,000 among A18-49; 707,000 M18-49; as well as 1.5 million total viewers.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

Late last week, CBS, Warner Bros. Greg Grunberg is set to star in A&E Network’s pilot Big Mike.  Grunberg will play a plus-sized detective with the San Diego Police Department who is a good cop but struggles with dating.  Happy Madison and Sony Pictures Television are co-producing the pilot and Doug Robinson is serving as executive producer; Ed Decter and John Strauss co-penned the script.

TV Land added Rita Moreno, Robert Walden and Tichina Arnold to its comedy pilot Happily Divorced headlined by Fran Drescher.  The comedy is based on Drescher’s real-life previous marriage and divorce about a woman (Drescher) who begins dating again after learning her husband is gay.  Moreno and Walden will play her parents while Arnold was cast as her best friend.

Camille Guaty landed a role on USA Network’s one-hour pilot Eden about a young hotel staffer (Nick D’Agosto), with help from his con artist cousin (Enver Gjokaj), gets a job as the concierge for an elite New York City hotel.  Guaty will play a diligent single mom who works in real estate.

FOX tapped Geoff Stults (October Road) to helm its Bones spinoff pilot which will air as the series’ 19th episode of the current season, cites TVLine.com.  The pilot is based on The Locator series of books authored by Richard Greener which centers on Walter Sherman known as “The Locator” a former military policeman who can find anything.  Recently, Michael Clarke Duncan (The Green Mile) landed the role of Walter’s partner Leo, a tough, cowboy philosopher.
