Cynopsis: DIGITAL
01/25/10

Good morning, it’s Monday, January 25, 2010, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

The Chinese government responded sharply to Hillary Clinton’s call for an open internet over the weekend, accusing the U.S. of “information imperialism” and utilizing calls for internet freedom as an excuse to make “groundless accusations” against China. Foreign Ministry spokesman Ma Zhouxu said China had 384 million internet users, 3.68 million websites and 180 million blogs and a constitution that guarantees its citizens freedom of speech. Meanwhile Communist Party newspaper The People’s Daily published an editorial accusing Ms. Clinton of hypocrisy, noting Patriot Act measures to censor speech and clamp down on the flow of illegal information.

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

Following the announcement that it will begin renting movies from the Sundance Film Festival, YouTube confirmed it has signed a live streaming deal with Global Cricket Ventures to feature live matches from the Indian Premiere League on the site. Viewers will be able to watch all 60 matches in the 2010 IPL for free on a dedicated channel along with match highlights, player interviews, pitch reports as well as an exclusive “YouTube View” not available on TV.

Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Foundation’s Archive of American Television began running a PSA to promote its online video archive EmmyTVLegends.org. Vanessa Williams of Ugly Betty fame stars.

China-targeted Metan Development Group announced will begin distributing its content on 10 of China’s most trafficked sites beginning Jan. 2010. Each week, Metan will debut short-form segments from its news magazine series Hello! Hollywood to help promote its broadcast TV efforts on portals such as MSN, Sina and Sohu; video sites Tudou, Youku, Ku6, 6.cn, VODONE and 56.com; as well as P2P client-based video streaming site UUSee. Metan says that the show will also be added to 8 more channels in China, increasing its reach to 200 million homes.

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

In a conference call with analysts last week Google executives called attention to display and mobile advertising as two big areas of growth to watch for. The company noted that:

  • Google’s ad revenue on its own sites increased 16%
  • AdSense revenues were up 21% during Q4
  • Paid clicks on ads increased 9% from the previous quarter
  • YouTube’s homepage, a darling of movie studios, was virtually sold out during Q4
  • advertisers are getting better figuring out what works on mobile; for instance phone number or address links in ads is increasing clickthrough rates

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

Italian Prime Minster Silvio Berlusconi has signed a decree that would establish a government body monitor online videos uploaded to video sharing sites such as YouTube or Dailymotion for adult or violent content, per the AP. The new legislation may require video sites to obtain licenses to operate in Italy.

Google founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin, tied at #11 on the Forbes list of richest Americans, announced a 5-year plan to sell off about $5.5 billion of their stock from the sale of about 5 million shares. The move would cut their combined holdings from about 18% to 15% of the company and reduce their voting stake to below 50% for the first time.

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

In what seems to be an honest (if unglamorous) attempt at crowdsourcing and community outreach, the FCC launched a Future of Media initiative to examine the future of media and the information needs of communities in the digital age. Consumers are encouraged to share their views about local newspapers, TV stations or websites and answer targeted questions on a searchable community page. The FCC will query users about media platforms, formats, affiliations, topics, business models and areas of focus. The idea of posing specific questions, rather than just soliciting open comments, is a good idea – the more intelligent the questions, the more insightful the answers. A new Future of Media Blog will also feature research and postings from FCC staffers or the Commissioner about the issues of the day.

Correction: CraveOnline worked with Universal Studios Home Entertainment not Paramount on its site and FB app for Smokin Aces 2.
