Cynopsis: DIGITAL
01/23/12
Good morning. It’s Monday, January 23, 2012, and this is your first early morning digital briefing. If you would like to read this or any other Cynopsis editions online, click here.
Last week wasn’t very good for supporters of the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and PROTECT IP Act (PIPA). After what was tantamount to a full-court press by web companies and internet users this past Wednesday, congressional backers of the antipiracy legislation have decided to shelve the bill, in its current incarnation, for the foreseeable future. Rep. Lamar Smith, chairman of the Judiciary Committee, said his committee will postpone the vote “until there is wider agreement on a solution.” Senator Harry Reid expressed similar sentiments when he chose to delay a scheduled vote on PIPA that had been originally set for tomorrow. In a joint statement released by AFM, AFTRA, DGA, IATSE, IBT and SAG, the organizations said, “We hope a new tone can be set and it is not one that turns our advocacy for this legislation into an implication that we are promoting censorship… We are committed to an open debate. We are equally as committed to protecting our members’ ability to create and to earn a living while doing so.”
Time Warner Cable has launched its TWC TV app, which delivers live television from 196 channels to mobile devices as long as you’re on your home wireless network, for the iPhone and iPod Touch. The app doesn’t cost anything extra, and includes features such as an interactive programming guide, a search box, set-top box tuning (with compatible devices) and remote DVR scheduling. The cable operator had released an iPad-only version of the app in March of 2011, as well as one for Android devices just last month. However, the Android app, as it stands now, does not support live-TV viewing.
Fridays at Galweather, a web series written by one of the stars of Showtime’s House of Lies, Ben Schwartz, as well as the series’ co-producer, Wes Nickerson, has debuted online and through Showtime on Demand. The webisodes will focus on the “frat-boy antics” of Schwartz’s character, Clyde, and fellow series star Josh Lawson’s character, Doug, at the offices of Galweather & Stern, a consulting firm that is the basis of the Don Cheadle-starring series. House of Lies co-star Kristen Bell is set to guest on several webisodes, which will be directed by fellow cast member, Glynn Turman.
TNT.tv, TBS.com and People.com will team up to air a live webcast of the 18th Annual SAG Awards Red Carpet Pre-Show, which will air on Sunday, Jan. 29, beginning at 6 pm ET. Once the awards show begins, the webcast on TNT.tv and TBS.com will not end as it will transition into offering viewers behind-the-scenes coverage of the press room, interviews with actors and more. In addition, TNT.tv will also be “SAG Awards Central,” featuring interactive elements and content, including a buzz meter that tracks which attendees are trending on social media channels, a seating chart and the ability for users to share photos from the red carpet across their social networks. Furthermore, selected tweets from fans will be featured on the telecast via graphic overlays and promos. As previously announced, actress Regina King will be live-tweeting the ceremony on TNT’s website.
The Digital Advertising Alliance has launched a new public education campaign, titled Your AdChoices, which looks to better inform viewers on the control they have over their online privacy. The campaign builds on DAA’s two-and-a-half year initiative to develop industry-wide best practices for the collection and use of data via its Advertising Options Icon. The first step in this online campaign will be banner ads that direct consumers to a new, informative website (www.youradchoices.com) that offers educational videos and a special “consumer choice” page, which enables consumers to opt-out of interest-based advertising from companies that participate in DAA’s Self-Regulatory Program. Since its launch in 2010, over 400 companies, including top brands such as American Express, AT&T, Disney and Microsoft, have adopted DAA’s Self-Regulatory Program.
Tremor Video has acquired the InPlay Publisher Analytics Solution from TubeMogul, and will integrate the technology into its VideoHub enterprise platform that helps publishers measure the performance of videos on their sites. The agreement is only for TubeMogul’s publisher analytics solution as the company recently shifted its focus toward launching a demand-side platform for video advertising, called PlayTime DSP, which retains all of TubeMogul’s video advertising analytic tools. InPlay will be available for all publishers as part of VideoHub for Publishers, which gathers insights and data from more than 1 billion video streams, and will launch in the first quarter of 2012.
According to an estimate from Cowen analyst Jim Friedland, Google makes $7 per year in mobile advertising revenue from each smartphone and tablet, reports TechCrunch. This estimate covers both Android and iOS devices; it includes revenues generated from search and display ads on mobile apps across both platforms. In addition, Friedland estimates that mobile accounted for 7% of Google’s total revenues in 2011, increasing from 3% in 2010, and is expected to grow to 13% in 2012. In fact, by 2016, he forecasts that mobile will be a $20 billion business for Google and will carve up a 26% slice of total revenues. Friedland attributes the positive forecast and growth of mobile revenue for Google to the staggering increase of smart devices available and in use in the market (estimated to be jump from 509 million worldwide in 2011 to 914 million in 2012).
Netflix has appointed its chief marketing officer Leslie Kilgore, who has been at that position with the company for 12 years, to Netflix’s board as a Non-Executive Director. The newly-vacated position will be filled by vice president of marketing Jessie Becker on an interim basis as the company conducts an external search for a new full-time CMO in the coming months. Netflix also announced the appointment of Jonathan Friedland as Chief Communications Officer. Both Becker and Friedland will report to Netflix CEO Reed Hastings.
Raju Narisetti is the new Managing Editor for The Wall Street Journal Digital Network. This will not be the first time Narisetti works for WSJ as he had been with the company for 13 years before moving onto new business ventures. Most recently, Narisetti had been serving as the managing editor of the Washington Post, where he was leading all digital efforts. The move will be effective as of February 1, per Post editor Marcus Brauchli’s internal memo to his staff.
A+E Networks has promoted two legal executives, Nancy Alpert and Maggie Reilly-Brooks, to Senior Vice Presidents positions. Alpert has been with the network since 2007 and provides day-to-day legal advice for A+E Distribution Group, leading the team responsible for structuring and negotiating the company’s distribution agreements. Reilly-Brooks has been with A+E for 25 years, she oversees business and legal affairs regarding the company’s non-fiction and documentary programming and also lends a hand to the brands’ marketing, ad sales and research groups. Both Alpert and Reilly-Brooks will also hold titles of Deputy General Counsel.
Amazon Studios is an “online movie development process,” which seeks to provide aspiring screenwriters and filmmakers an opportunity to get their creative projects made. The studio/website runs monthly and yearly contests in which it pays out thousands of dollars per month, and $1.1 million in annual awards for the best “test” movies and scripts from 2011 (“test,” because the end-goal, according to Amazon Studios, is to work with Hollywood to turn the best projects into major feature films.) To that end, the studio has inked the likes of writer/producer Akiva Goldsman (A Beautiful Mind), producer Lawrence Bender (Pulp Fiction) and writer/director Alexander Payne (The Descendants) to serve as guest judges for the best movie and script awards. And with all of that in mind, one of the top-rated and top-performing movies of the most recent contests is one that actually fits the topic of Digital quite well: I Think My Facebook Friend Is Dead. It’s a feature-length romantic comedy that has been nominated for several awards by Amazon, including Semi-Finalist for Best Test Movie of 2011. Check the site out, and if you have 100 minutes to spare, check out this movie, as well as any others you find interesting.
