CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Cynopsis

01/23/06

Good morning. It’s Monday, January 23, 2006, and this is your first early morning briefing, coming to you from the NATPE Convention in Las Vegas:

NBC has good news, and bad news.  The good news is My Name is Earl and The Office have both been given full season orders for the 2006-07 season.  The bad news is this is definitely the final seasons for both Will & Grace (no surprise there) and The West Wing (there’s the surprise). The decision to make this West Wing’s last season was not due to the sudden death of John Spencer (Leo McGarry), but was made before his death when the ratings this season were not up to previous seasons. The series finale has been scheduled for May 14, and a new president will be voted into office.  The one-hour series finale for Will & Grace on May 18 at 9p.

*MORE GOOD STUFF*NBC made a slew of other programming announcements – bringing back a couple of shows, introducing a few new ones, and moving others:

  • Returning to the NBC schedule is Howie Mandel in Deal or No Deal on February 27 at 8p, airing nightly for a week, and then joining the schedule as a weekly show starting March 6 at 8p.
  • The Apprentice returns on February 27 at 9p.
  • Law & Order will move to a new time period as of March 22 when it will air at 9p (opposite ABC’s Lost).
  • New to the NBC schedule is Convictions from Dick Wolf Prods., debuting on March 3rd  at 10p.
  • Heist, a show about a group of theives planning on burgularizing three Beverly Hills jewelry stores during Academy Awards week, will premiere on March 22 at 10p
  • The Black Donnellys crime serial will be part of the network’s fall schedule, co-written by Paul Haggis and Bobby Moresco.  This is the same pair who wrote the film Crash.  The series is from NBC Universal Television Studio and Blackfriars Bridge Prod.
  • Windfall from Regency Television, is about a group of people who all pitch in for a lottery ticket and win big. This show stars Luke Perry and is expected to air this summer.
  • Treasure Hunters from Imagine Television and NBC Universal, is a treasure hunt hosted by Laird McIntosh, as several teams try to follow the clues to find the treasure, before they are eliminated.
  • And finally, Las Vegas will move to Fridays at 9p starting March 3rd.

MTV‘s upcoming 17th season of The Real World will b based in Key West, Florida, and kicks off on February 28 at 10p with the first of 24 episodes from Bunim-Murray Prods.

BET will debut a new 30-minute original show named …In Black on February 9 at 9p.  The network is working with Nissan North America’s Infiniti on the program.  …In Black spotlights five African American artists from the Infiniti in black campaign as they talk about design influences on art, culture and life.  The show was developed by TRUE Agency and moderated by former New York Times film critic Elvis Mitchell.

Pre-NATPE Clearances:

  • New Line has cleared more than 60% of the country with its latest syndicated offering – the off-Court TV weekly 60m series Masterminds which chronicles the thievery from some of the world’s most cunning theives.  Clearances include 18 out of the top 20 markets, including WNYW and WWOR/NY, KCAL and KCBS/LA, WFLD and WPWR/Chicago, WBWB/San Franscico, WTXF/Philadephia, WFXT/Boston, KDFW and KDFI/Dallas, WTTG and WDCA/Washington DC, WJBK/Detroit, KRIV and KTXH/Houston, KSAZ/Phoenix, and the WB 100+ Station Group, among others.
  • Sony Pictures Television says it has cleared The Greg Behrendt Show in 87% of the country, including 23 of the top 25 markets, including the 26 Tribune-owned stations.
  • Warner Bros. Domestic TV Syndication is holding a press conference today during which they are expected to announced Tyra Banks will be back for a second season, and announce its newest daytime talker Dr. Keith Ablow, both of which come to the convention with plenty of clearances in their back pockets.

New at NATPE 2006:

  • Jack Hanna’s Into the Wild is a new 30m series feature Jack Hanna, in collaboration with producer/director Guy Nickerson and from Jungle Jack Prods and Spectrum Prods. The weekly series follows Hanna into a variety of exotic locations in search of the “ultimate animal experience” and meet the people, experience the animals, learn about their plight, and then leave behind much-needed supplies, medicine, technology or funds.
  • Christopher Lowell is back with a new series called HomeNext with Christopher Lowell, a show devoted to the current fast paced lifestyle. Lowell’s HomeNext project is being developed to be seen on a variety of platforms. It’s syndication platform will be distributed by The Television Syndication Company.

 * NEW ORDERS / CASTING / DEVELOPMENT / PRODUCTION *TNT has ordered up the pilot plus 12 episodes of Saved with Tom Everett Scott and Elizabeth Reaser. Scott plays an EMT who is struggling with his own demons, not the least of which is a gambling addiction. Saved could join the schedule as early as this summer. This show is from Imagine Television and Fox 21.

ABC has ordered up two more pilots, both from Touchstone TV:

  • October Road is about a screenwriter who returns to his home town and teaches at the local university.
  • Enemies is about two childhood friends who as adults find themselves on opposite sides of the law.

Fox has also ordered up two more pilots:

  • The 12th Man, inspired by Paul Shirley’s blog on ESPN.com called My So-Called NBA Career in which he writes about being the pro ball player who never really gets off the bench. The project is from 20th.
  • Also from 20th is Primary, a procedural drama focused on two hostage negotiators, one male one female, who spend their days negotiating with hostages and negotiating with each other.

 * EXECUTIVE MOVES *Tim Overmyer has been named Division Manager, Southeastern region, of Twentieth Television.  Effective immediately, Tim will be responsible for representing all of Twentieth Television’s first-run and off-net programming, as well as movie packages, before stations throughout the region.  Based in Atlanta, he will report directly to Michael Newsom, SVP/Broadcast Sales, Southeastern and Southwestern region manager.

Los Angeles attorneys Gary S.Raskin, Arnold Peter, Barbara M. Rubin and Jody Simon have formed Raskin Peter Rubin & Simon LLP, a new entertainment law practice based in Century City. The firm will focus primarily on entertainment law on behalf of production companies and distributors, financial entities, corporations seeking sponsorship deals, new media firms, trade associations and individual talent. In addition, the firm will be involved in other areas including real estate, labor and employment and general business practice.
