Good morning. It’s Monday, January 23, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.
NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
TAG Entertainment Corp. has completed production of its feature film Red Riding Hood, a modern musical version of the Brothers Grimm fairy tale produced in a mix of live-action and CG effects. Red Riding Hood is slated to be released domestically by Fox Home Entertainment. International distribution will be handled by Seven Arts International. TAG produced this movie using several techniques intended to keep production/post-production costs down. First, almost all of the live action portions of the movie were shot using blue-screen backgrounds. Then the live-action actors were keyed into digital sets in real time, for approval by the movie’s director Randal Kleiser to approve on location, thus eliminating some post-production work. Tag Entertainment says that this production process allowed “smaller, independent production companies to achieve high-quality production values within their budget constraints.” The cast of Red Riding Hood includes: Lainie Kazan, Joey Fatone, Sam Stone, Henry Cavill, Debi Mazar, Dan Roebuck, and newcomer Morgan Thompson. Special effects for the movie were supervised by Sandman Studios (Antz, Godzilla, Independence Day, Jimmy Neutron, Shrek and Titanic), and the Director of photography for the project was David Stump (Blade, Garfield, Stargate, X2, X-Men).
Sony BMG Music Entertainment has acquired all rights to Reggaeton, which will be produced as a feature film by Sony BMG Film with Jennifer Lopez’s Nuyorican Productions. An original screenplay written by Albert Leon, Reggaeton is the first movie for Sony BMG Film. The movie will be shot on location in NY and Puerto Rico with production expected to begin in spring 2006. Reggaeton begins in the South Bronx and revolves around Rob (21yrs), a would-be hip-hop star who flees to Puerto Rico following a run-in with local thugs. In Puerto Rico Rob discovers Reggaeton music and heads toward stardom, which ultimately leads to a recording contract, a corrupt music producer, a return to NYC = conflict.
Jetix Europe will debut its new series Monster Warriors (26 x 30 min) beginning spring 2006. Targeted to K8-12, Monster Warriors is a live-action fantasy adventure series featuring CGI monsters. The story centers on four teens who become heroes when giant 1950s B-movie style sci-fi monsters attack Capital City. Created and directed by Wilson Coneybeare, the series is produced by Coneybeare Stories in association with Jetix Europe and Canada’s YTV. Monster Warriors will be distributed by Buena Vista International Television. Jetix Europe holds all Pay TV rights for Europe and the Middle East, and has TV distribution, home video, consumer product and online and interactive rights including mobile. Additionally, Jetix Consumer Products will manage the licensing, merchandising and home video rights to Monster Warriors.
MORE KIDS STUFF
The manuscript for Peter Pan in Scarlet, the official sequel to J Barrie’s Peter Pan, has been submitted to Oxford University Press by its author Geraldine McCaughrean. The book, which is set to be published in October 2006, is the only book that has been sanctioned by the Peter Pan rights holder Great Ormand Street Hospital. In 1929, Barrie gave the copyright to Peter Pan to the London hospital. You may recall that about two years ago the Great Ormand Street Hospital launched an international search for an author to pen the Peter Pan sequel to mark the book’s 100th anniversary. Subsequently an advisory panel, including Barrie’s great-great-nephew David Barrie, judged the entries, and selected McCaughrean, an award-winning author of 130+ books & plays for kids/adults. Oxford University Press will publish the Pan sequel in the UK. The book will be published in the US by Margaret K. McElderry Books, an imprint of Simon & Schuster Children’s Publishing. The book will also be published internationally through with international publishing partners.
In connection with soap opera General Hospital‘s new teen gay storyline, the ABC Daytime soap opera and its young actors, Ben Hogestyn (Lucas) and Lindze Letherman (Georgie), will appear in a PSA encouraging a stand against homophobia. The psa will air on the ABC Daytime soap’s January 24 episode with a connection to GLAAD’s website for more info on the issue. SoapNet will also broadcast the PSA on the same day. In the General Hospital storyline, Lucas comes out to his cousin Georgie, becomes a gay bashing victim and must also deal with revealing his secret to his mother and uncle. It is reportedly the first time a soap has included a gay male character as part of the central family as well running a PSA about homophobia.
Clarification : The comment in last Friday’s edition of CynKids “…the new block provides CBS with its FCC programming…,” referring to the new deal between CBS and DIC for a Saturday morning kids block, was inaccurately attributed to a Nickelodeon spokesperson.
MARKETING/LICENSING
The ToddWorld website ( www.toddworld.tv) launches a sweepstakes today titled, Something-for-Everyone-Week, and runs through the end of the week. The contest includes a daily drawing for free books (Little Brown & Co.) and is being promoted on websites including AOL’s KOL, DiscoveryKids.com, and Kinderstart.com.
