Cynopsis

01/14/08

Good Morning.  It’s Monday, January 14, 2008, and this is your first early morning briefing.  Today may be a “snow day” for those of us in Connecticut, so while the office may be closed, everyone at Cynopsis is always reachable via email.  And the email is always the same –

As a result of the ongoing writers strike, ABC Studios on Friday became the first television studio to utilize its force majeure clause and end the contracts of nearly thirty writers and non-writing producers, especially those who didn’t have current projects in the works.  In a statement, ABC Studios said:  “The ongoing strike has had a significant detrimental impact on development and production so we are forced to make the difficult decision to release a number of talented, respected individuals from their development deals.” Once the strike is over, the force majeure clause also provides that the Studio must hire these folks back, under the same terms.

Some of those who were terminated include the writing teams of Joshua Sternin and Jeffrey Ventimilia (That ’70s Show), Gabe Sachs and Jeff Judah, director Larry Charles, exec producer Jon Robin Baitz (Brother & Sisters), writer Bill Callahan (Scrubs) and actor/producer Taye Diggs in his production deal (he’ll still appear on Private Practice), among numerous others.

Today’s Premiere:
DIY Network: Today Show Tips at 1130a

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

Coming to ABC is the competition reality series Dance Machine, with newly-named host Jason Kennedy. The show is produced by RDF USA, and ABC has ordered up five episodes, per THR.

More reality shows coming to CBS – three new shows have been ordered:

  • America’s Top Dog from RJ Cutler and Molehill Prods is a competition between man and man’s best friend to win a cash prize and serious bragging rights for the best trained dog.
  • Game Show in My Head from Katalyst Films, Fox21 and Hat Trick, is based on a UK format. The idea is pretty simple – contestants go about their regular lives, until they receive instructions via an ear piece they wear, from which they receive instructions to perform a series of often embarrassing and outrageous things in public. No host named for this series as yet.
  • Secret Talent of the Stars from Magic Molehill Prods, airs twice a week and features celebrities performing tricks and talents (singing, dancing, juggling, etc.) in front of a panel of judges. Viewers will decide who stays and who goes in the Results Show.

Casting Call: Two people are needed to co-host and star in a documentary-style TV show. One person should be a professional handyman or handywoman who has an outgoing personality; and the other person can be a partner, employee or relative. The duo can be a father and son/daughter, brother and brother/sister, husband and wife, friends, or professional partners. The show will follow them as they work on daily home repairs and building activities. Interested applicants should email names of the partners, ages, where you both live, contact information and brief bios and photos of each to:
.

Casting Call: Internationally-famous stylist Peter Ishkhans and The Style Network are teaming to makeover small businesses in the Southern California region. They are looking for small businesses that need to make their space more appealing to potential customers, those that are having a hard time competing against the large chain stores or struggling with not enough money for renovations. Interested applicants should contact Casting Director, Shannon McCarty at 818-760-4442 or send an email to her at:

CYNOPSIS DIGITAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY:  Netflix is lifting the cap it has imposed on heavy movie streamers on the eve of the iTunes rental announcement, expected to be made at tomorrow’s Macworld expo. Customers on the $16.99/month plan will now have unlimited access to its library of 6,000 online movies and TV shows. Ironically Netflix’s Watch Instantly service still doesn’t support Mac users, but the announcement may steal some of Steve Jobs’ thunder nonetheless.    Full edition: CYN DIGITAL. (Or to listen to the Cynopsis Digital Podcast click here or subscribe to it at iTunes here .)

CYNOPSIS KIDS – TODAY’S TOP STORY:  CondeNet is making changes to its teen girl targeted website, Flip.com, in an effort to increase its audience.  Initially launched in winter 2007 as a stand-alone social networking website, CondeNet plans to shift Flip.com to be an ad-supported web application that will live on other social networking platforms.  Flip.com will make its first foray as a distributed application on Facebook.  CondeNet, the web division of Conde Nast, was one of the early partners for Facebook’s application program.  Full edition: CYN KIDS.

CYNOPSIS INTERNATIONAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY:  The U.S. Treasury has blacklisted Syria’s Al-Zawraa network for allegedly encouraging insurgent violence in Iraq by airing patriotic songs that reached the Islamic Army of Iraq.  The U.S. government has categorized insurgents as a terrorist group.  The U.S. assets of Al-Zawraa and its founder, ex-Iraqi legislator Mishaan Jaburi, have been frozen in addition to a ban being imposed on any companies or persons who have dealings with both.  The channel launched in 2005 but some officials are unsure if it still exists as the BBC’s monitoring unit has not found signals since July 2007. Full edition: CYN INTERNATIONAL.
