Good morning. It’s Monday, February 7, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Viacom acquires a minority stake in Rainbow Group; an Italian kids animation and consumer products company.  The terms of the deal were not disclosed.  Last year, Nickelodeon, a unit of Viacom, inked a worldwide content partnership with Rainbow for the animated series Winx Club.  Under that initial agreement, Nickelodeon picked up the TV rights for Winx Clun in the US and pay-TV rights for Latin America, Canada, the UK, Australia, New Zealand and Benelux, as well as the merchandising distribution rights to the property in the same regions.  The partnership includes the co-development and co-production of seasons five and six of the series and gives Nickelodeon access to the existing Winx Club TV series and two theatrical films.

WordWorld, the preschool-aimed property, has set up an in-house licensing model that will focus on service and partnerships, as it announces the conclusion of its agency deal with 4Kids Entertainment.  The move comes just ahead of Kidscreen Summit and 2011 American Toy Fair, where the company will be exploring new opportunities.  The new in-house effort will manage consumer products, home videos, digital and broadcast rights across all territories.  The only exceptions to this include France Televisions Distribution will continue to license broadcast and home video rights in English and French, as France 5 continues to air the series, and Exim continues to manage home video and consumer products licensing rights across Latin America.  WordWorld continues to air on PBS Kids (US), Discovery Kids Latin America, Playhouse Disney Asia, TVO and France 5.  WordWorld’s existing consumer-product licensing partners include: V-Tech; NCircle; Bendon; Celebrate Express; Trevco; Gallamard in France; D’Vinni and Editorial Vertice in Latin America; and partnerships in Asia to provide English-language learning programs.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Alphanim, Calidra and the Pagot family enter into an exclusive deal for Paris-based Alphanim to develop and produce a new CGI animated version of Calimero.  Additionally, Alphanim has acquired the existing 130×30 and 290 episodes of programming for international distribution in both 13 minute and half-hour formats.  Calimero first aired on TV in 1963, and has since been seen in 79+ countries.

Italy’s Mondo TV Group, producer/distributor of animated TV series and movies, enters into a deal with Ponpoko Productions, Starbright and Kappa Edizioni to co-produce and distribute the 2D animated series Beast Keeper (52×13), which is currently in production and will be available for fall 2012.  Under the agreement, Mondo TV is the majority co-producer of the series, with 80% ownership.  The series is based on a property owned by Ponpoko.  Mondo TV will manage the production, including the screenplay that will be under the direction of Orlando Corradi, President and CEO/Mondo TV.  Mondo TV will also handle worldwide for the distribution of all TV rights and home video rights for a period of 30 years.  Starbright will oversee the licensing and merchandising rights in Italy, in collaboration with Mondo TV.

MORE KIDS STUFF

DQ Entertainment (DQE) and ZDF Enterprises Germany ink co-production deal to produce a second season of the 3D HD animated series Jungle Book (52×11), which is budgeted at $12.2+ million.  ZDF Enterprises, along with its German Pubcaster ZDF, will serve as the lead co-production partner for season two of Jungle Book, which it will distribute across Europe and Latin America.  The first season of the animated Jungle Book series, which is based on Rudyard Kipling’s classic story of the same name, has been picked up by networks, covering 160+ countries, including: BBC (UK), TF1 (France), ABC (Australia), TVO (Canada), ZDF (Germany), JCCTV (Middle East), Noga TV (Israel), Channel B (Indonesia), EBS (Korea), among others.  Additionally, it will also air on multiple Disney channels in territories around the world.

Teletoon (Canada) is set to premiere Bakugan: Mechtanium Surge, the newest season of the Bakugan franchise, on Sunday, February 13, at 1:30p.  The new season debuts following on the heels of the current season, Bakugan: Gundalian Invaders, which aired on the network yesterday.  Teletoon Canada is co-owned (50/50) by Astral and Corus Entertainment.

The Hub ( www.hubworld.com ) celebrates Valentine’s Day, Monday, February 14, with friendship-themed episodes of its animated series including Strawberry Shortcake’s Berry Bitty Adventures (1-2p, 6-7p), My Little Pony Friendship is Magic (2-3p, 7-8p), and Pound Puppies (3-4p, 8-9p).

Ameba ( www.amebatv.com ), the K2-12-targeted Winnipeg-based multi-platform digital distribution entertainment service, expands and is now available in 1+ million homes in North America via ROKU set-top boxes.  Programming includes content featured in Ameba’s Smart Kids TV library.

MARKETING/LICENSING

TV advertising campaigns for the preschool property Pocoyo ( www.pocoyo.com ) debuts in the US this month to support the Pocoyo CGI animated series and the new toy line based on the series. Co-produced by Zinkia Entertainment and ITV Studios Global Entertainment, the Pocoyo TV series debuted in the US in 2010 and can be seen on Nick Jr. channel, PBS, Univision, and Discovery Familia.

  • Zinkia and US master toy partner Bandai America developed the mom-targeted (Women 25-49) campaign, which is comprised of 90 primetime commercials that will run o E! Entertainment Network, OWN, Oxygen, Bravo, and TLC, among others.  Media planning and buying for the on-air ad campaign was handled by Mindshare, a GroupM media services agency.
  • NCircle Entertainment has also created new Mom-aimed (18-35) commercials to promote the DVDs and toys throughout the month of February and then again leading up to Easter on channels across DISH Network and Direct TV, including OWN, Bravo, Toon Disney, The Hub, TLC, Cartoon Network and others.

Go, Diego, Go!: Diego Saves The World, a new DVD title that includes six episodes, will be available from April 2011.  Created by Nickelodeon Home Entertainment, the DVD will be distributed by Paramount Home Entertainment.

Warner Bros. Consumer Products (WBCP) will showcase its new line of licensed toys and products based on the upcoming new animated TV series ThunderCats at the 2011 American International Toy Fair, which will be held in NYC February 13-16.  The new ThunderCats series is produced by Warner Bros. Animation (WBA) in collaboration with Japanese animation studio, Studio 4C.  The new ThunderCats series, a re-imagined version of the 1980s animated action series, will launch on Cartoon Network this year.  Global master toy licensee Bandai America, along with licensees worldwide, will offer toys inspired by the new re-imagined animated series as well as the classic franchise.  The line-up will include the detailed ThunderCats 4-inch figures, each of which will come with a weapon or accessory and includes an embedded magnet that allows the toy to interact with and activate unique features in other ThunderCats products, as well as vehicles featuring sound effects.  Additionally, the initial fall 2011 line includes the articulated ThunderCats 8-inch Classic Figures, based on the 1980s animated series, and the ThunderCats Deluxe Sword of Omens.  Other key licensees supporting the launch of the new ThunderCats series include Icon Hero, with 6-inch statue collectibles; Hard Hero, with limited-edition porcelain statues; and Mezco, with vinyl figures.
