Good morning. It’s Monday, February 4, 2013, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
A lights out Super Bowl that went down to the wire will make for some interesting Nielsen numbers today, but which ads walked away the big winner from the game? According to Ace Metrix-which broke down and rated each of the commercials based on popularity and buzz with various demographics-the top three overall ads were: Budweiser’s Brotherhood spot with a score of 665, followed by the American Diary Association’s Morning Run and Coca-Cola’s Security Camera.
Other items of note… Front Row Marketing estimates that Beyonce’s performance in the Pepsi Halftime Show generated over $6.9 million in brand exposure Sunday night. Oreo’s call-to-action in its Super Bowl commercial helped the company’s Instagram account grow by tens of thousands of followers. Before the ad ran, Oreo had just over 2000 followers. Afterward, the brand boasted over 33,000.
As for the blackout disruption of the broadcast, Jennifer Sabatelle, Vice President of Communications at CBS Sports issued a statement during the fourth quarter. “Immediately after the power failure in the Superdome, we lost numerous cameras and some audio powered by sources in the Superdome. We utilized CBS’ back-up power and at no time did we leave the air. During the interruption, CBS Sports’ Steve Tasker, Solomon Wilcots and our studio team reported on the situation as a breaking news story, providing updates and reports while full power was being restored to the dome including our sets and broadcast booth. All commercial commitments during the broadcast are being honored.”
On the Air
In other news from Super Bowl weekend… Congratulations to the media personalities who were named into the Pro Football Hall of Fame over the weekend. ESPN’s Bill Parcells and Cris Carter as well as NFL Network’s Warren Sapp made the cut this year, along with Jonathan Ogden, Larry Allen as well as senior selections Curley Culp and Dave Robinson. After the announcements were made, ESPN President John Skipper noted, “Both Bill and Cris continue to contribute to the game today by sharing their perspective on ESPN with fans. I congratulate them on this prestigious honor and we look forward to being in Canton for the induction in August.”
Saturday’s broadcast of NFL Honors on CBS held par with the event’s first outing a year ago on NBC. The show drew a 0.9 in the adult 18-49 ratings, according to Nielsen overnight numbers, matching last year’s score in the demo. Viewership saw 3.54 million people tune in for the annual event.
What a difference a star makes. ESPN reports that networks are asking the NFL when Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III will return to action so they can make sure to include him in their primetime programming plans for next season.

With new members in tow, the Atlantic Coast Conference is eyeballing New York as a potential home of its men’s basketball tournament, according to ESPN. Other cities being considered to host from 2016-21 include Atlanta, Charlotte, Greensboro, N.C., Tampa, Fla., and Washington D.C.
Univision Deportes’ coverage of the international friendly featuring the Mexican National Team against Denmark last Wednesday averaged 2.2 million total viewers, with 1.4 million in Adults 18-49 and 723,000 in Adults 18-34. The match ranks as the top-rated sports telecast on UniMas in the current 2012/2013 season across all key demographic groups.
Also, Friday’s edition should have stated that beIN Sport had exclusive English-language rights to David Beckham’s new club in France’s Ligue 1. Univision Deportes owns the rights for Spanish-language telecasts and will broadcast the Paris Saint-Germain vs. SC Bastia match live on Friday, February 8 at 2:30 ET.
Arena Football League team the Philadelphia Soul is for sale. Majority owner Craig Spencer announced that he wants to sell controlling interest in the team, stating, “I take great personal and professional pride in being one of the founding co-owners of the Philadelphia Soul, but at this time it’s important that I fully commit my attention to my real estate business, which is growing at a tremendous pace. As I look to sell, I do so knowing that there are tremendous people in place in the organization who are committed to its progressive growth as well as maintaining the Philadelphia Soul’s well-earned reputation as one of the premier franchises in the Arena Football League.”
