Capitalizing on the enormous popularity of PBS’ Downton Abbey, Amazon has snapped up the Carnival/Masterpiece series through an exclusive content licensing deal signed with PBS for its Prime Instant Video service. Seasons one and two are currently available on Amazon; Season three will join them on June 18th. Downton Abbey is the most-watched series in Amazon’s history.
This April, TBS premieres the second season of its original comedy Men at Work created by Breckin Meyer (Road Trip, TNT’s Franklin & Bash) and produced by Sony Pictures Television on April 4 at 10p.  TBS further set the premiere date for its new competition series Who Gets the Last Laugh? on April 16 at 10p.  The new hidden-camera competition series, hosted by Donald Faison (Scrubs) will watch as well-known comedians and comedy actors compete against each other to see who can pull off the most outrageous practical jokes.  Who Gets the Last Laugh? is produced by Jason Goldberg and Ashton Kutcher’s Katalyst in association with Warner Horizon Television.

This Thursday, MTV will air a half-hour special following the first season finale of Buckwild at 11p.  The special will feature never-before-seen footage from the first season which ends with back-to-back episodes at 10p and 1030p.  In addition, MTV will air interstitial interviews from the show’s cast throughout the night starting at 8p.  Since its premiere, Buckwild has become the #1 rated original cable series on Thursday nights among P12-34 with an average of 3 million total viewers each episode (based on Live +3).  Buckwild is from Zoo Productions and Parallel Entertainment.

GSN is moving the premiere date for its original series Family Trade which highlights the real-life competition of a modern-day barter system set in Middlebury, Vermont.  Family Trade now opens on March 12 with two stacked half-hour episodes at 8p and 830p.  The series is produced by Rogue Atlas Productions in association with Lionsgate.  Family Trade was previously slated to debut on March 5.

Currently in its 10th season, syndicated Teen Kids News (TKN) from Albert Primo’s Eyewitness Kids News LLC completed renewal contracts with Sinclair Broadcasting for an unprecedented three years until 2016.  TKN was additionally renewed at NATPE on all 200 television station affiliates for the next two seasons which takes its national clearance to 95% of the US, the largest distribution reach among E/I programs.  TKN is cleared on FOX O&Os in major markets as well as 74 FOX affiliates across the US and on all 28 Hearst Television stations.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

ABC gave a pilot order for a multi-camera comedy titled Divorce: A Love Story from Rules of Engagement producers Mike Sikowitz and Daniel Lappin.  The plot centers on Kenny and Robin, a recently divorced couple, who even though they were bad together are even worse apart and can’t stay out of each other’s lives.  The idea is based on the Israeli format Life Isn’t Everything.  Sikowitz and Lappin will write and be EPs on the pilot with Noa Tishby also acting as an EP.  Sony Pictures Television, ABC Studios and Reshet are producing the half-hour comedy.

CBS picked up a detective drama pilot called Second Sight from Homeland EP/director Michael Cuesta and CSI’s Carol Mendelsohn.  The project is based on a UK series and is described as a Gothic psychological thriller about detective who is suddenly afflicted with an autoimmune disease that causes hallucinations that reflect his subconscious.  Cuesta will write, direct and serve as EP along with his brother, Gerald.  Mendelsohn will also be an EP along with Julie Weitz and Paula Milne, who created the UK edition.  Nick Reed and Phil Goldfine will also be EPs.  CBS Television Studios is producing.

Production is presently underway on the fourth season of TNT’s Rizzoli & Isles, starring Angie Harmon and Sasha Alexander.  TNT ordered 15 episodes for season four which will premiere this summer.  Warner Horizon Television produces.

Long-time independent producer of Scripps programming, Joyce Pearson recently founded Fog Edge Media.  Joyce’s company is currently producing the third season of I Want That on DIY Network.  Fog Edge Media is currently in post-production on the I Want That branded one-hour special covering the Consumer Electronics Show (CES).

~ CASTING NEWS ~

Funny guy Rob Riggle is in the final negotiations to star in the FOX comedy pilot, The Gabriels, which follows his recent guest-starring gigs on FOX’s New Girl and The Cleveland Show. The comedy is about an introverted, neurotic Wisconsin family that lives in a community of over-sharers. Riggle will play devilish, childish Ken Gabriel. Justin Hurwitz (The League) and Andrew Gurland (The Last Exorcism Part II) are writers and EPs. The single-camera comedy is produced by 20th Television.

Bravo Media inked AMC Breaking Bad star Anna Gunn to star as the titular lead in Rita, one of the network’s first scripted drama pilots which will begin production this spring.  Miguel Arteta will direct the pilot and also serve as EP. Rita is an adaptation of a Danish format of the same name about a private school teacher who struggles to raise her own teenage kids while dealing with a stressful bureaucracy and overprotective parents at her school.  Fox Television Studios is producing with Krista Vernoff (Shameless, Grey’s Anatomy) on board as writer and EP along with Mikkel Bondesen and Henrik Bastin as EPs for Fabrik EntertainmentKristen Campo is also a co-EP for Fabrik Entertainment.  Bravo also has another scripted drama pilot The Joneses produced by ABC Studios on tap.  Both scripted series are slated to premiere in fourth quarter 2013.
