Good Morning.  It’s Monday, February 4, 2008, and this is your first early morning briefing.

On Friday, major progress was made in contract talks between the AMPTP and the WGA which may lead to a tentative agreement within a week, just as the writer’s strike is about to enter its fourth month. Apparently both sides have breached the gap on the most contentious issues such as compensation for projects distributed online, although specific details of the possible agreement were not disclosed as both sides had previously agreed to a news blackout during the talks. Once the agreement is approved by leaders of the Guilds, the pact would require ratification by a majority of the active Guild members, totaling more than 10,000.

Tonight’s Premieres:
CBS: Welcome to the Captain at 830p and The New Adventures of Old Christine at 930p
MNT: Paradise Hotel 2 at 9p
Starz InBlack: Ryan Cameron: Uncensored at 11p

The Game is over, but Spike’s Commercial Bowl has just begun.

~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

NBC picked up a new CTV original drama, The Listener (wt), the second time in a week that a CTV-developed Canadian series has been picked up for broadcast in primetime by a major U.S. network (CBS announced last week it picked up the CTV series Flashpoint). The Listener is about a young man who can read people’s thoughts and acts on them. NBC ordered 13 episodes of the one-hour drama which was green-lit by CTV last December. Production will begin this spring in Toronto. The Listener is produced by Shaftesbury Films in association with CTV and NBC and is distributed in the U.S. by Program Partners.

Oxygen will add the U.K. series Janice & Abbey to its line-up on February 19 at 11p. The six-episode 30m series follows supermodel Janice Dickinson as she mentors Britain’s Next Top Model runner-up Abbey Clancy. The show originally debuted last October on Oxygen’s broadband channel as a web series.

Looking back – the debate with Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama on CNN Thursday night delivered record high viewers for cable television with 8.32 million.
Looking ahead – Super Tuesday will find all of the broadcast and cable networks on board with major coverage, while other fan favorites such as American Idol will be airing right on schedule.

Houston-based Sage Broadcasting will sell its remaining broadcast television stations to new TV station group owner Bayou City Broadcasting also of Houston. A deal has been signed and the application for FCC approval will be filed soon for the transfer of these stations located in West Texas: KIDY-TV and KIDY-DT-FOX/San Angelo; KXVA-TV, KXVA-DT-FOX and KIDZ-LP-MNTV/Abilene; KIDU-LP/Brownwood; KIDB-CA/Sweetwater; KIDV-LP/Albany; and KIDT-LP/Stamford. With the sale pending FCC approval, Bayou City will enter into a LMA with Sage to provide programming to the stations.

IMHO – The Big Game: Fox couldn’t have asked for a better game had they been able to direct the action on the field themselves.  As for the ads – best commercial in the Super Bowl, according to the fans in this house?  The trailer for the film Wanted and Hank the Rocky Clydesdale for Budweiser. Funniest?  Will Ferrell as Jackie Moon in the Bud Light ad. Best part of the whole night?  The final score.  Go Blue!

CYNOPSIS DIGITAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY
:
This time the rumors turned out to be true. News broke on Friday that Microsoft has made an unsolicited cash-and-stock offer for Yahoo, offering $31/share in a deal valuing the web 1.0 portal at $44.6 billion. With Microsoft offering a 62% premium on Yahoo’s closing stock price on Jan 31, analysts think Yahoo would be hard pressed to refuse it. A combined “Microhoo” would benefit from economies of scale in audience, engineering talent, operational redundancies and R&D of new applications. It would also potentially give Google a run for its money in online search, internet advertising and the burgeoning web-based applications business – the most potent threat to Microsoft’s software empire. Not surprisingly, Google is already raising questions about what the deal may mean to “openness and innovation” on the web.  Full edition: CYN DIGITAL. CYNOPSIS KIDS – TODAY’S TOP STORYDisney’s new 3D movie, Hannah Montana & Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour was released in just 683 3D theaters this weekend to the largest open ever for a Super Bowl weekend, earning $29 million, per Box Office Mojo‘s movie studio estimates.  The movie displaced the previous Super Bowl weekend title holder, Titanic (1998), which was earned $25.2 million over what was its 6th weekend in release.  Though the studio had planned to have the movie in release for a week, after this weekend’s box office take the studio has decided to extend the movie’s theatrical run.  Directed by Bruce Hendricks, and produced by Art Repola, the movie was also produced by director Kenny Ortega (High School Musical movies).   Full edition: CYN KIDS.

CYNOPSIS INTERNATIONAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY Millennium Pictures and Fremantle Media Australia (FMA) formed a joint venture focusing on Australian and international drama development and production. Millennium head and former Nine Network drama topper, Posie Graeme-Evans, will also head up the JV, working with FMA CEO Mark Fennessy, COO Carl Fennessy, and FMA Director/Development Jason Stephens, according to THR. ~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Walt Disney Company board of directors on Friday signed President/CEO Robert A. Iger to a new five-year contract through January 31, 2013, citing they wished to retain his services for a longer period, according to the NY Times. The new deal gives Iger a boost in compensation taking his minimum bonus to $10 million in 2008 up from $7.25 million in his previous contract. The deal also grants him three million Disney shares as a signing bonus and it did away with the target value of his long-term incentive award which was upped to $9 million from $8 million in restricted stock units or options. Leading Disney since September 2005, Iger was half-way through his original contract.
